Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.

Weird, Netflix has done that as long as I've been using it (Granted Netflix Canada, but still), about 2 months.

Question...why does Luke look EXACTLY like Marty Mcfly?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1053810/

The Big Year. Based on the novel "The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature and Fowl Obsession" By Mark Obmascik, it follows 3 guys on their quest to complete and win the "Big Year", a slightly fictionalized account of the real-life informal competition between birders to spot the most bird species in a single year.

When I first heard about The Big Year, I was...curious, but skeptical that it could work. It stars Steve Martin, which I have adored basically my entire life, Owen Wilson, which I can say I moderately tolerate at the best of times, and Jack Black, who I can enjoy immensely but under very certain circumstances. Each of them have their own, very different comedy stylings and from what I knew this film played to none of them. And you add to it the somewhat ridiculous nature of the competition (A film entirely about bird watching? Oh joy.) and you get a less than entirely enthralled BDA, but my curiosity won out and I watched it. (And then I watched it again last night on netflix which is what prompted my writing this review)

And I am here to tell you that The Big Year is among my favorite movies of the last decade and a half. To bury the lead somewhat, everything about it just makes me feel good, as a filmmaker and as a human being. Watching it is like a really good cup of hot chocolate and a blanket in front of the fire on a Alberta winters night.

All three of our leads Martin, Black and Wilson put in some of the best performances of their careers. Black's character, Brad, plays the dual role of one of our 3 leads, as well as being the somewhat omniscient narrator. Brad is a 36 year old divorcee, working full time, and has an overwhelming passion for birds, and a desire to win the Big Year, basically just a normal joe-schmoe. Blacks performance is sweet, kind, and a little awkward, and only on a few occasions does he fall back to his typical Jack Black character. Honestly I can say he really surprised me in this role. Wilson plays the closest thing to a antagonist as this film gets, he's the current world record holder and absolutely driven to make sure he keeps that, but at the same time trying to balance his marriage and life with birding. Wilson plays this character with a restraint and a humanity that I never thought he would have been able to pull off, so much so that by the end of it his story has become such a tragedy that you can't help but look at him and feel sorry for the guy. And Martin plays the CEO of a large self built corporation on the verge of retirement who finally decides that this is the year to do it and decides to go on his Big year. I don't really need to say much about Martin, he puts in an absolutely stellar performance, touching and heart warming, you just can't help but love him. I honestly can not say enough about the performances of these 3 guys, I am absolutely floored by them every time I watch it. Which isn't to take anything away from the rest of cast, everyone in this movie puts in an amazing performance (Not to mention that every side character is some actor/comedian you know from somewhere else. Just to name a few, we have Kevin Pollak, Joel McHale, Paul Campbell, Jim Parsons, Rashida Jones the list goes on and on)

I've heard the complaint that The Big Year feels to mushy and feel-goody, and I can certainly see how some might see it as a bit excessive, I loved every second of it. It feels like a breath of fresh air in the current movie market. In some ways it feels like a harkening back to the movies I grew up on, the family movies of the late 80's and 90's, the movies that didn't need gun fights and car chases to make it enjoyable, but were confident enough in their characters to set the story on them. And The Big Year pulls it off nicely, the characters feel like real people and the story is driven and altered by how they react, and the characters have to live with that choice, and it's all set against an amazing road trip on steroids like backdrop.

Needless to say, I love the hell out of this movie, and considering how ignored it was while in theaters, I definitely say give it a watch.

I'm pretty sure BAMF would apply here.

True, but in a very different way.

So my question is how does it differ from a pure CG film? In terms of man-hours, is there a significant cost saving? There will still be a post process, will it get made faster? Why make a film this way?

I'm definitly not an expert, and I don't have time to make a full thing right now. But I'll say this, I'd imagine the amount of effort put in to making something like Paranorman is at least near the same level (If not a little less) than making a full CG feature.

And if I had a choice between the two styles, as to what I want to watch, stop motion EVERY TIME. It just looks better. It looks like a real thing that's there and happening (Because....well, it is) as opposed to a full CG, where if you're very lucky and very rich you can get something that approximates that.

(You can read my whole horrid thing I wrote first thing this morning in the chat about getting so much for free with stop mo if you feel like it...)

(Yes...yes it does)

So it doesn't really matter how they made it.

I'd like to dispute this, but I died of dysentary while trying to travel to California.

Note, he said THIS Generation.

I'll point out we've been using the exact same jets for air travel since 20 years before I was born (The first 747 flew in 1969.), and the tech hasn't really changed much since that. Not to mention we've mostly been using the exact same physical planes planes since then too.

Vidina, can I ask you something, in absolute, complete sincerity?

Why is it exactly that whenever I try to engage in a conversation by offering some sort of new idea or evidence to the contrary of some idea the person opposite of me thinks, I get told to chill out, or get off my fucking high horse?

Do I just not understand this whole conversation thing? I mean isn't this how civilized people have a discussion about things they don't agree on? Or are we just not allowed to talk to each other about anything we disagree with then?

I honestly don't get it.

When it comes to Rose, I grew to not completely loathe her face and voice every time she was on screen over the length of her run....thaaaats about as far as I'm willing to go. She just rubbed me the wrong way for some reason... (Giggity) but I could never get on board with her.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK ME

I didn't think it was possible to want something so much that it's physically painful. But dammit it all.

EDIT: Correction. This was the first time I have been in physical pain from wanting something, and it still hurts more than the lego version. Nothing against the lego...but...it's Lego. tongue

Which basically means that about 3.5 hours from now they start coverage and two hours later everyone will either be cheering or frantically trying to figure out what went wrong.

Not exactly. Because of the precision timing necessary of relaying the confirmation signal through Mars Odyssey  and then back to earth. It's possible for the landing to be off by a couple seconds and the two will miss each other. They've said, that if after 24 hours after landing they still haven't received the signal, that's when they start thinking about failure scenarios, until then it's just a waiting game for the satellite to come back around to pick up the signal.

KurtJMac has actually done a pretty in depth walkthrough of the whole landing procedure and what we can expect for the landing.

Sigh. Fine. I'll explain it for you.

You post a random clip claiming crazy genius. I watch, have no clue whats going on or why it deserves any sort of crazy genius label. I throw up a post saying I need context, followed by an xkcd comic demonstrating an example of lacking context (In this case you're the dude running on stage, and I'm the audience going, "Obviously we're missing something").

Clear?

Exactly.
