How about The Sixth Sense and other M. Night ventures ... ?
No he's not saying the train should have been done over but something to that extent should have come in during the film.
For instance when they are in the hotel the stakes should have been raised, not another train, but something that would challenge the dreamers.
I also found it hard to believe he wouldn't shoot his wife then and there at the snow level, it felt a bit contrived. He knows very well she's a projection, why would he believe she was real in that instance?
There is so much to like in this movie, not sure why I'm having such mixed feelings on certain things.
I feel the same way. The same exact way.
But yes. I absolutely loved it. I love how Nolan makes complex ideas, but with a very emotionally appealing center. The stuff with Mol and Dobbs at the end really affected me, and the entire time my brain was very happy with a deliberately structured, grounded, sci-fi. Movies like this (though with its flaws) make me very optimistic about filmmaking going forward.
I didn't feel like it has much emotion, at least none that affected me. The stuff between him and Mol I couldn't really connect with because for most of the movie she was crazed! He even says it near the end that Mol isn't the wife or the woman he was in love with and that he had to let her go.
I connected more between the father-son stuff than the wife-husband storyline. But even that didn't compel to call this a movie with a lot of emotional gravity.
And I don't think the guy is lying. I think he genuinely remembers things going the way he tells it.
The would be the Cartman Complex.
*for reference watch South Park Episode "Fishsticks"
The way I created this list was by putting them in chronological order and then comparing and contrasting each with this question: which one would I enjoy seeing over the other (call it a mini tournament).
1. The Incredibles
Perfectly entertaining, I can watch this whenever.
2. Toy Story
2
Capitalizes on the first Toy Story and extends the themes and creates new ones. Not to mention it's action and thrills were also elevated.
3.
Finding Nemo
Really fun and entertaining.
4. Toy Story
A classic.
5. Toy Story 3
My least favorite Toy Story only because it had no song (ie "Strange Things," "I Will Go Sailing No More" and "When She Used To Love Me") and I felt the stuff away from Andy's house (ie Sunnyside and Bonnie's house) wasn't as intriguing though the dump was very thrilling. I also felt like Lotso was a bit of a rehash of Stinky Pete (bitter toy who wasn't played with anymore).
*Does anyone else think that a perfect time for a song would have been when Andy and Bonnie were playing with the toys at the end*
I can see arguments that TS3 is retreading aspects of the first two, but I see it more as - look, these stories are inherently similar anyway, and I see Toy Story 3 as the one they got right.
And for this I think it's a great trilogy, not so much that Toy Story 3 got it right. I think each built on the last and the stakes for the Toys got higher, though I felt Toy Story 3 skated over a few things and rehashed. I felt they skated over the fact that their were only a handful of Andy's Toys left (ESPECIALLY Little Bo Peep!). They also bypassed Jessie's angst over Andy leaving her after Emily did the same.
6. Wall-E
Though unbalanced, it holds a special place in my heart. The love between Wall-E and Eve captures me as well as the social commentary.
7. Monsters, Inc.
Boo breaks my heart.
8. Up
Much like Wall-E it's unbalanced but the latter half is not as compelling as Wall-E's for me.
9. Bug's Life
I really do enjoy this movie and don't hold much against it but I just don't hold preference to it against the others above.
10. Ratatouille
Same with this.
11. Cars
Doesn't speak to me. It felt like it could have been made by Dreamworks.
Any Spike Lee film (his good stuff).
