Trek was never good at selling toys smile

Actually, now that I think about it, given how merchandized Star Wars already is, if anything that aspect can be discounted. The toys WILL sell, regardless, at least to start. Given that, they'll actually have remarkable freedom.

Re: #44 - Disney Buys Lucasfilm

Aronofsky will most definitely not be involved.

I suspect the only reason he was signing on to Wolverine was because he wanted to do Noah but couldn't get the budget for it since his movies were mostly flops. He was going to bite the bullet and do a safe studio job, except Black Swan turned out to be a completely unexpected huge hit, and he didn't need the Wolverine gig anymore.

Re: #44 - Disney Buys Lucasfilm

with only 2nd hand info, I think you have that one backwards.
Aronofsky was offered Wolverine because of Black Swan, not the other way round. My understanding was that with the success of Black Swan financially, whether unexpected or not, he had the juice with Fox to be offered Wolverine, an arguably big property.
When he then had "wishy washy issues with being away from his family to film in Japan" (quoted due to not being 100% sure of validity, he was able to take his french comic treatment and say essentially "well you wanted me on a big project, I'm now passing on your thing, what about my thing?"

I think Vaughn is a good possibility having just dropped out of First Class 2...

Re: #44 - Disney Buys Lucasfilm

As for questions of new episodes about this, this weekend there will not be "more on this as it develops," this weekend Cabin comes out. We won't even be recording. (Which was one of the main reasons we knocked out an insta-DIF two days ago; otherwise, we'd have to have waited two weeks!)

It's hard to believe Disney (c'mon Disney of all studios) is going to restore credibility and de-infantilize the franchise. We'll see.

Hmm. Maybe. I'm not really aware of anything other than the three movies, and I guess in my mind the decision is whether to try to add another three to the real three, or more junk to the EU.

Re: #44 - Disney Buys Lucasfilm

I dunno.  I'm going to reserve judgement until actual failure or success happens, because this is so bizarre, there's no telling what's going to happen.

That being said, I just feel like doing direct sequels with older Luke, Han, etc. is going to end in tears, blood, and fire.  Returning to characters later in their lives seems to disappoint much more frequently than it succeeds.  The new ones should really be set 100-200 years down the road.  What have the Jedi become after the reboot with just one master with no formal training to guide them?  What have the long term effects of the overthrow of the Emperor been?  Stuff like that.

I'm not saying another story with the Boys won't work.  It's just, to coin a phrase, I have a bad feeling about this.

Re: #44 - Disney Buys Lucasfilm

I'll put money down that it's the story of Luke's son/daughter, with only Luke present and playing a tangental mentor role. There'll be a certain synergy to the third trilogy if it's centered around the next Skywalker generation.

Of course, then Lucas will claim in interviews etc. that he had always intended for Eps 1-3 to be the story of Anakin, 4-6 to be the story of Luke, and 7-9 to be the story of Ben (that's the name of Luke's son in the EU, and I'd be surprised if they dumped it, because it's a nice name that pays tribute to ObiWan and was probably approved by GL way back when).

Anyone else think Disney have already chosen Matthew Vaughn? He dropped out of the next X-Men film this week then very bloody soon after the Disney news broke, Singer was named as the new X-Men director......

Actually, nah, it's just a coincidence big_smile

Re: #44 - Disney Buys Lucasfilm

This whole thing does make me think though. Considering how they managed to keep it completely secret for almost a year, how fucking awesome would it have been if they went and made the entire movie in secret, then suddenly just put out a trailer and an announcement: "By the way, Star Wars 7 comes out next weekend".

How much would the internet lose their shit, it'd be glorious. In the age of knowing everything years in advance, I'm still holding out hope for a studio to do something crazy like that one day.
