Re: Release, Record: 11/9

OH Pirates. Disney turns a ride into a movie, and this time it works...

For about one and a half movies... then it stopped being fun and started being redundant.

Characters stopped having arcs, and started having 'the next fantastical setpiece' methinks.

Regardless, I hope the opinions are split on these films, they deserve some dissecting.

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

I don't see the fact character arcs stopped as a totally bad thing, but maybe having them stop in the middle of the film and not in an interesting place isn't a good idea smile Ideally they'd have gone into the first film thinking about a franchise and brought the characters in that one to a nice state at the end from which they could go into the next movies without having to worry about much baggage.

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

why not just do all 3 in one day and get it over with...

Liked the first one, in my book, it's a perfect movie.  Hits all it promises to hit and doesn't really miss a beat.

Second one, not so good, but okay.

Third one, WTF, just kill me now this thing is so boring and way too long.  Did enjoy the multiple Jack Sparrows angle though.  That was sweet!

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

My feelings on the Pirates franchise match up pretty well with my feelings on the Matrix franchise. The first one was great, the second one was okay, but unnecessary and certainly inferior, and the third one was a hideously bad waste of celluloid.

I actually watched the 2nd Pirates before the first. One of my friends dragged me to the theater.
At the end, I didn't understand who Barbossa was or why he was important. I didn't see the 1st until several months later.

That's why I thought Trey's shirt looked like an Islanders logo. Anybody else seeing it?

Also, all this talk of the kraken forced me to dig up the following image.

Thanks for two fun commentaries on one-and-a-half good films!

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Indeed, it was fun. I felt like it should have had a special credit-

that Keith Richards bit needs to be in the anniversary mash-up Ryan!

I'm tempted to say he should the entire third film as Keith Richards. Don't even acknowledge it's Trey, just act like it's Keith Richards.

I'm curious, aside from the ending "twist" not having any impact, did the movie make sense to you? Could you engage with the characters and story? We were comparing it to the first, how was it for you going in cold?

And how did it affect your viewing of the first?

Ah, Mystery Men. An excuse to finally see it. I hope at least one of you is familiar with the Flaming Carrot comic it's based on (one reason I avoided the film: they tried to do a Flaming Carrot movie without Flaming Carrot! Not that a FC movie would have been at all a good idea in the first place...)

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

Too late.

It has kinda felt like a running theme of late.

Edit: This one is more targeted to specific panelists than the show as a whole, but I've been noticing a lot of "we hate what you love, now tell let us tell you why you're wrong."

But that one might just be me.

I agree, the show has to go back to its original theme of "What Teague loves is stupid, and here's why" smile

I concur, the show needs to go back to the good ol' days of Fig bashing.

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

I wouldn't say it's so much a "good reasons for hating everything" podcast.  I think for the most part that the podcast is about analyzing the film from a structural and story perspective.  I mean, Dead Man's Chest had huge flaws in the way the story was put together.
I have my problems with Mystery Men and Zombieland so I look forward to seeing what is said.

I just remember Trey saying he didn't like it but I don't think the rest of you had seen it at that point.

As long as they're actually good reasons, I don't much care if we do. I'd rather that than bad reasons for liking everything.

But I'm gonna have to disagree with the idea that this is becoming a running theme. Of the ten most recent posted commentaries (not including the anniversary show), fully 8 of them are positive, 3 of them are full-on lovefests, and one of the positive ones is even gawdam TWILIGHT.

Of the recordings we've done since then that I can recall, we were positive about WATERWORLD, PITCH BLACK, and PIRATES 1, and negative toward CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK and PIRATES 2, but negative is not the minority opinion on those.

So really, what we're talking about here is SCOTT PILGRIM, SPIDER-MAN 2, and to a lesser extent perhaps HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE. Before that I think you'd have to go clear back to PAN'S LABYRINTH to find a commentary that goes negatively against the grain, and we've had quite a few episodes where we've gone against the grain to give a positive view on movies most people have negative feelings toward.

It's not like we collude together just to be contrarian, we show up and give our honest opinions and try to articulate why we hold those opinions. You'll recall on both PILGRIM and SPIDER-MAN 2 we were in fact surprised to discover a lack of positive opinions on the panel.

The easy answer to the problem of DiF occasionally not liking the movies you do is to stop liking bad movies. wink

I will say that I recall loving MYSTERY MEN (but I said that about SPIDER-MAN 2 before revisiting it, so), and I haven't seen ZOMBIELAND but I loved the script and the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, so I've got a good feeling about it.

While we're on the subject, pre-emptive warning: if you don't want to fall in love with movies we don't speak well of, I don't recommend developing feelings for THOR.

All I want for Mother's Day is for all the panelists to have a good time, whether or not they like the film, and thereby be entertaining.

That and flowers. Would it kill you to send flowers?

It may be the accidental unanimous dislike that makes them stick out so much. For both the films mentioned above you could just as easily had a split viewpoint if different DIF regulars had been free that day. You guys have enough on your plate with regard to scheduling and such without taking that kind of thing into account, but maybe eventually it could be a tie breaker when you have more then 4 of you available.

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

Spoiler Alert, sorta -

I'm with Dorkman, re: not understanding the idea that we're attacking people for liking different things than we happen to like.   Somebody in the Scott Pilgrim thread said something like "heck with you guys, I liked Scott Pilgrim".  To which I say, rock on, go with God, party on Wayne.     As I've said many times on the podcast, do not assume that "I didn't care for this movie" automatically includes "and if you did, then your mom's a whore!"

As evidence - and here's the sorta spoiler - I like Mystery Men a lot, but I seriously doubt I will be able to justify WHY when we get to talking about it.    It's kind of a shapeless thing, and nearly gets derailed early on by one of the most badly-conceived opening scenes in recent movie history.   But then it finds its footing.  The characters crack me up, overall the story works for me, and I'm looking forward to watching it again.  For some unknown reason, I like Mystery Men, okay?

And if you don't, then say hi to your mom for me.
