Re: #45 - Unpopular Opinions

OK, here's another - 2010: The Year We Make Contact is very underrated. 2001 fans criticize it for being too different from its predecessor, too literal. I think it's a decent movie on its own. Peter Hyams knew that he couldn't out-Kubrick Kubrick, so he decided simply not to try.

I agree. It's not a sequel to the movie, but it is a rather good adaptation of the book 2010 (which, I think, was the last "new" Clarke novel I read)

As for Woody Allen, those who dislike his movies should find the CD of some of his old standup comedy. Damned funny.

I love 2010, I'm glad Hyams did his own thing with the movie.

also I've never seen a Woody Allen movie.

The best Bond was Timothy Dalton, and the best Bond movie is The Living Daylights.

*drops mic*

Sorry, had fried food for lunch.  *picks up mic*

Living Daylights is especially fascinating today, considering it's about Bond helping the noble Afghani freedom fighters resist an invading superpower (see also Rambo III).   And it has the best action setpiece in any Bond film evar - that freakin' brawl while clinging to a cargo net off the back hatch of a cargo plane.    Especially because it was 1987 and some stuntmen actually did that shit.  Just thinking about that scene gives me vertigo.

The three most overrated songs in rock history are Knights in White Satin, Hotel California, and Stairway to Heaven.   There have been plenty of other songs that are as pretentious and overblown as those three, but none were so goddam long.    I realize this opinion is partly due to my age - those songs were hits in a time when there was maybe one good rock station in any market.  If any of those songs started up you had no choice but to turn the radio off for ten minutes, because there was nothing else to listen to.

Spaceballs is a terrible movie.  You could retitle that thing Science Fiction Movie and put it on the shelf with all the other "__________ Movie" schlock.

"February" is a stupid name for a month.

That's just a function of over-saturation. They're awesome songs for the first 300 listens. But enough already. Which is not the song's fault. If Megan Fox and Scarlett Johansson were begging you for threesomes every hour of the day, you'd get sick of it after the first few years. Not them again. Leave me alone.

not long to go now...

My legal counsel has advised me that I can disagree in degree but not in kind.

Except for the February thing. I can agree wholeheartedly with that. All the months should be renamed.

I agree about Dalton... he's boss.

But I'd say On Her Majesty Secret Service is the best Bond film. The Living Daylights is a good action flick, sure...

Oh yeah.

That movie was funny when I was like ten years old.

He was certainly the best actor to portray the character but I don't think he was given much to work with, script-wise.

As a lover of stunts and stunt set pieces I have to fully agree with this. I watched the film a couple of weeks ago for the first time since I was a kid and I was blown away by that scene. It's fucking amazing, I have nothing but respect for stunt men and women, especially in pre-CG days.  Especially stunts that look so dangerous it makes you wonder 'why would they do that?' I love all that shit.

YES! Thank fuck someone else thinks this! Even as a fan of 80s movies, and I like some shit movies, I have never understood the appeal of  Spaceballs. The Science Fiction Movie analogy is spot on. The only joke I like in it is the stunt doubles one big_smile

It's fine you disagree with it smile The showrunner for BSG also worked on Trek, and at least to me seemed to be reveling in the freedom more than in creating a good show. I have no examples, because I have no desire to go back and look for them smile

Well, Ron Moore worked on DS9, which is already the most edgy and un-Trek like of the series, so it's not like BSG was his first chance for some creative freedom. I don't know, I just take issue with this idea that all Trek is cut from the same mould, and that BSG diverges deliberately from 'Trek convention' at the expense of a good story, especially when the show's strength is the story. But then... you were fast forwarding through it  wink

Not a fan of Woodie Allen's movies at all either, so agree with that unpopular opinion.
And I've said it before on these forums, 2010 is a much, much better movie than 2001.

My favourite Bond film is GoldenEye, which was originally planned to be a Dalton movie. I have this vague recollection that The Living Daylights was the first Bond movie I went to see at the cinema, but looking at the release date I would have been about 6 years old...

Re: #45 - Unpopular Opinions

I concur that Dalton's take on Bond is probably the closest to Fleming's, but the scripts he had weren't the best.

Whereas, I didn't buy the romance between Bond and Vesper in 'Casino Royale' at all, and it nearly broke the movie for me.

'Crash' was a clunky, predictable melodrama.

'Spaceballs' not only sucked space rocks through a fifty metric foot space hose, it was also about ten years too late.

'Psycho II' was a sound attempt at a sequel to the original.

'Psycho III' stank on ice.

'Manhattan' is waaay better than 'Annie Hall', but Allen hasn't made an interesting film since 'Bullets over Broadway'.

'Bullshot' is a marvellously bonkers comedy that no-one has heard of.

'Robocop' benefited from being edited for television.

Kubrick's best film was 'Paths of Glory'.

'Splash!' may well be a better-written comedy than either 'Tootsie' or 'Some Like it Hot'.

Harrison Ford's narration improves 'Blade Runner'.

Jerry Goldsmith is the best film composer of the last fifty years.

I have. Haven't seen it in years but it was on Channel 4 in the UK a lot during the 80s/90s. Kid me used to giggle at the title when it was said in trailers and whatnot.

'Robocop' benefited from being edited for television.

In what way?

He was certainly my favourite......

I fully agree. His Star Trek: The Motion Picture score feels much more dignified and subtle than John Williams' Star Wars music that inspired it.

Perhaps "Why me? Why me?" is better than "Fuck you! Fuck you!"

That is certainly awesome. I also remember them dubbing 'asshole' with 'airhead' although it was actually the US TV version that ITV just bought so they didn't have to edit anything. They got Tango & Cash ('Rambo is a Primitive') and Lethal Weapon ('this is a real firing gun' ) too smile

Agree. I couldn't stand Crash. Also:

Blade Runner and Prometheus both struck me as having nice art design but were otherwise equally bad movies. (More unpopular for the Blade Runner part than the Prometheus part)

Speed Racer is a perfect movie. I don't understand why it didn't get better reviews.

I have a deep and irrational hatred of Shia LaBeouf's acting. When I see him on screen I have a strong urge to punch him in the face.

Thor was a bad movie but I enjoyed it. Because Hemsworth, Hiddleston, biceps, and accents.

Re: #45 - Unpopular Opinions

I actually first saw Robocop on TV but it must have been cable because it was only moderately censored, i.e. the guy still got his kneecap shot off and screamed for a bit.
I actually think TV censors have the most thankless job. I loved the move "Con Air" in part because the TV censoring of prisoner swearing is pretty hilarious ("My daughter's picture! Where did you put my daughter you dirt eating pencil neck!") It was a an interesting break from the intense violence of the movie. But, the level of creativity these people sometimes need to use its pretty remarkable.

God loves you!
