Almost no US filmgoer has seen the uncut version of that film, so it's not on the radar. No matter what they do, I'm betting half the people say "that's not Godzilla".

Even if I hadn't watched the trailer, the fact that it's a Godzilla movie is a kind of a big tip-off that there's probably going to be some cities being destroyed.

Well America said No to the Pacific Rim approach, maybe they'll embrace this darker more realistic take on it

Yeah, it's not like other "dark and gritty reboots" that we've recently seen. The original is already really dark. All they have to do is match it.

I have to say, having never seen a Godzilla film, I'm absolutely stoked after seeing that trailer. (The real one not the Breaking Bad one. 
)

Aside from the Emmerich one, I don't believe I've ever seen one of the old ones in their entirety. Definitely seen parts, really, really tacky parts from the many sequels.
Looking forward to that original cut hi-def version coming out soon, I'll definitely sit down and watch that.

I'd recommend Mothra vs Godzilla from 1964, Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster from the same year, and Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla from 2002. Ghidorah is the film in which they start to turn Godzilla into a good guy (and the dub has the classic line, "There's no law against being a demagogue."
