Naturally, Vidal Sassoon is famous for one thing: He did the hair for Susan in the pilot episode of Doctor Who, his first big break.
This Is The End has a GREAT homage to the devil-rape dream. Some shots are copie exactly. Except it'S Jonah Hill instead of Rosemary. He even delivers the "This is no dream!" alone verbatim.
I really like that about Eastern European languages. Once you learn the phonology, pronunciation's incredibly straight forward to read. There's hardly any confusion on how to say a word, right? At least in Czech. Got kind of hammered in Brno one night over the summer and ended up learning all of the extra letters and reading a bunch of poetry out loud. Oof. Forgot most of them, though.
That flash seared steak is called tartare aller-retour.
Cassavetes had been acting regularly in TV and films for like fifteen years by the release of Rosemary's Baby, usually bouncing between generic-good-looking-whatever-bit-part and the surprise-secret-bad-guy, so this worked out perfectly for him. And there's also the whole thing with him being the largely undisputed grand golden godfather of American independent cinema, so to "put it in Star Wars" there's a slight air of casting Truffaut in Close Encounters… Zey belong here Mozambique.
Holy crap Laura Beth you're awesome let's hang out.
Laura Beth is indeed awesome. And Cassavetes is awesome as well. In that order.
This movie might be one my father was referring to when he told me about his main beef with "horror" films: why do they only show Satan/evil is real, and not God? It pissed him off, non-religious person that he otherwise was, that the movies only showed one side. You almost never saw God actually step in and help, or prayers actually work as they're supposed to.
Well, the problem is that if God gets involved, the story is over. He wins. So you have to keep him out of it. In ROSEMARY they do declare God is dead, maybe they're not just saying that.
When I was writing THE DESCENDANTS for Dark Horse (not the Clooney one, for those who don't know this story), which was about the descendants of angels (fallen and otherwise), this bothered me a lot. I tried to hang a lantern by having a character in the obligatory secret organization mention that God isn't actually infallible, but they want the world to think that so there's not a panic/anarchy. Boy, did that ever not fly.
Ironically, believers have less trouble with this construction because it's the way they believe real life works. The devil has free rein, we have to oppose him as best we can, and God doesn't get involved because free will or faith or something. REASONS, OKAY
I'm tired of hearing such one-sided opinion about the devil.
The bible is basically the fox-news of religious text.
As opposed to God, who courted, wooed, and married Mary before ... Wait.
Look, while we can all agree that of all the made up ghouls and goblins in the pantheon of bizarre human beliefs, lucifer is pretty sweet, it doesn't change that Mia Farrow with a pixie haircut was pretty fucking hot.
So props to Mr. Satan for hitting that up.
