Re: Release, Record: 11/9

I thought there were a few unreleased movies, but maybe they didn't reach your high standards. I know during the Twilight 2 recording you guys were saying it'd probably never make the cut.

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

I'm sure there is plenty for a release, just no recording would mean that the buffer continues to shrink.

I always find it amusing when there is a taping that is up the next day, as opposed to those that wait for a few to come out.

Always makes the new week a bit more interesting when there is the puzzle of what new thing will there be to entertain me.

I can't make the live chat for Sucker Punch and Kick-Ass sad

Irrespective of your arguments, Sucker Punch is special like fucking the pretty, retarded girl. She's great fun in bed, does everything you ask, you just have to deal with the guilt and shame afterwards.

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

Quick question: will it be Sucker Punch the extended edition, or the other one ?
- btw: hopefully your team, with all their movie knowhow stuff, will help change my view that the end is one right big downer. sad

Hm. Probably extended, I don't think the original cut is on my Blurry.

Is the original cut on the blurry?  roll

It has both. I saw the original and I borrowed your copy to do it.

In that case, I'd rather do the theatrical. (The extended one isn't fixed or anything, and it's longer.)

I mean, it could happen, but what if one of these four commentaries is awesome? What then? I make no promises.

A program note:  Anything I may say in the Sucker Punch commentary will be redundant compared to the above.

Well played, sir.

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

I just watched Source Code again. I know I've made some hay about it in the past, specifically about the ending, but I found some more big problems. Here's the biggest one.

Colter is experiencing the last eight minutes of Sean's life. Because of this, it makes sense that he can wander around the train and talk to people, as Sean would have experienced that. I'll even give it to the movie that Colter can formulate areas that Sean didn't enter, like the train station. But how could he possibly have found the bomb? Sean didn't know where it was, and Colter was working only with his experience. So how could the Source Code have simulated the location of the bomb?

Here's an easy fix: Just say that the Source Code pulls from the brains of everyone on board the train, or maybe just everyone in that car. They can only put Colter into one body, so they choose Sean because science science science blah. Then you have a space constructed from the shared experiences of all of those people, and since one of them is the bomber, Colter can find the bomb.

Again, I just watched the movie for a second time, and I'm almost positive that they never address this plot hole.

EDIT: Also, did they ever explain why it's necessary for the person entering the Source Code to be inches from death? I remember them saying that they could replace Colter with "someone with similar injuries to yours," but why? Why can't anyone just go in?

And why is Jeffrey Wright playing the role like he's doing a trailer voice-over the whole time?

I haven't seen Source Code, so I avoided reading Doc's post. But I've heard good things about it from members of this forum, so I need to know:

Is Source Code good enough that I should buy it?

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

We'll address a lot of this tomorrow, and here there be spoilers, but:

Doctor Submarine wrote:

Uh, they DO say this. They built the simulation from the collective memories of everyone on the train. They put him into Sean because they're physically similar so that's easier for whatever reason.

Doctor Submarine wrote:

This actually wouldnt solve the problem because the bomber didn't die in the attack, and therefore his memories wouldn't be in the pool of victims from which Source Code draws.

Of course, the whole punchline is that it's not a simulation at all, it's a full-on alternate reality and the folks who built the machine have no idea. They think they built the Matrix, they actually built a hybrid Sliders portal/Quantum Leap machine (it ain't random casting that Scott Bakula is the voice of his dad). So the memories thing is ultimately a red herring.

Doctor Submarine wrote:

Because they have to cut open your head and wire it directly into your brain, presumably permanently. No one's going to volunteer for that, but apparently they can legally be conscripted if they're as good as dead.

Thumbs up Thumbs down

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

Okay, but that still doesn't fix the plot hole because, as you said, the bomber doesn't die in the train. I'm structuring this argument based on the rules that the movie originally sets up, not the crazy bullshit that it pulls at the end.

Re: Release, Record: 11/9

Now that I've seen it, I agree with Michael and Trey that the only way the ending and much of the rest of the film make any sense is if the machine is more than an 8-minute simulation created from the brains of the dead (whose brains wouldn't be in good shape anyway after being on an train traveling 45 MPH and exploding).

But for that to work thematically, Jake has to SAY, "This machine isn't what you think it is. I can CHANGE the past." Then the scientists need to go, "Tut, tut, brain in a jar," and then privately say "Is there something TO this? We really DON'T know much about Doc Brown's flux capacitor before he died."

Boom. Movie fixed.

EDIT: To clarify, it is a strong rule of storytelling that anything that an authority figure like a scientist says is true unless it's questioned by the protagonist or antagonist. (It's how "the rules" get delivered.)

But in thrillers, where the main theme is usually "all is not as it seems," you need to be able to subvert the authority (who is usually a lying baddie). But any other character questioning the authority is usually the "Guinea pig". He's the guy who says, "You're full of it," walks out and gets eaten by the aliens or zombies or whatever to help prove the authority correct.

I can't believe that I'm wasting my day watching Tammy Tell Me True with Sandra Dee, just waiting for DIF to start recording.

Damn it.

It's interesting tho how the Tammy movies hinge on female viewers wanting to be Tammy and male viewers being pretty sure that if they ever met Tammy they could trick her into giving them a blow job.
