Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Just watched Snail's stuff, as well as Kyle's. Both are perfect.

*thumbs up*

Thanks guys. I know right now I'm the only one seeing the big picture come together, and I'm here to tell you, this really is gonna work.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Note: If you signed up, it's my understanding that you are in. If not, lemme know, and we'll sort it out.

So, the 7th has come and gone, and here's who I'm missing footage from. I'mma ask you - for now - not to be a jerk about it to any of these folks, because everyone has different hurdles to clear to get anything shot at all... but just so ya know, if you're not on this list, I love you.

If you are on this list, I love you too, I just want you to film your goddamn thing already.

So, bold people below, gimme a status report plz.

Faldor
FCW
Fireproof
Gregory
Landporpus
Owen
Paulou

Pav

Of this list, I have at least heard from six of them - all of whom have said "yeah yeah, sorry, not quite there yet," and that's cool with me. (As long as they get-there-yet relatively soon. I mean, like I said, not everyone can get this thing done as easily as others.) And two of these people have said they're gonna have footage in tonight, which, hellz yes.

This leaves only three people who have been silent since jump street. I'll be contacting them directly to find out what's up. Hopefully they're still excited by the idea and wanna help out and participate, but if not, I have a plan for this.

This means that of 29 parts, 26 came through with no worries at all. This further means... holy crap.

In case you've missed the memo in previous posts, yes, everyone - this is gonna work.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Wrapped on my show yesterday.

Got tasked last minute with an entire sequence for the finale of a favorite TV show, so apologies for blowing the deadline. Had planned on having a day off in, um, April.

Everything's shot, just need to sort and wrap it up in a neat little package. Should be online tonight.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Teague,

I shot half my scenes today (S1, the McD's scene and I got all my through the windshield/10-seconds of silence bits). Before I finish, I have a question: I know my first scene and the McDonald's scene are supposed to take place while the car is parked, but what about the other scenes? You didn't specify which scenes are meant to occur while driving, and which aren't. Sorry to nitpick, but I didn't want to proceed until I knew precisely what you wanted/needed. Also, it's been raining/storming in Texas off and on for a couple days now, so I was unable to shoot everything in one go.

Unless you're parked at McDonalds or getting into/out of the car, you're drivin.'

Or fake-drivin.'  smile

Thanks John.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Am off to do my remaining shooting now -- three (!) people are helping.  It's like I have a film crew. Ideally, I won't cough up a lung while on camera, but you can cut that out, right?

I can add smoke to it to make it more impressive.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Okay, I've wrapped.  I'll try to get it all uploaded this evening, but, if not, definitely during Sunday.

Also, when I said above It's like I have a film crew, I was mistaken. It wasn't like I had a film crew, I had a film crew who just happen to be a family.

I wish I'd had the presence of mind to video mother, father and daughter while they discussed among themselves depth of field and lens choice and exposure, and figured out and rehearsed how to start a shot looking at me inside the car and end it passing over my shoulder looking at a view, having gone smoothly outside, down a four-foot drop, over a railing and past tourists. Or later, being carefully directed to try that one more time, but maybe with more emphasis on this, while my lines are on a cue card being held out of shot for checking between takes.  It's like I was Marlon Brando or someone.

Bloody brilliant, and much better than I could ever have managed by myself, or even just with my wife, due principally to her not having six hands and three brains.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Awesome. I love that. There's gonna be a special thanks for all the folks who helped.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

By the way, Teague, if I were to upload everything I have, it would be around 12GB.  Is that a problem for you, server- or bandwidth-wise?

I'm planning to pare it down and organize it according to your suggestions anyway, but I'm still pretty fluey, and it's tiring, so I may not get it as cleaned-up as I'd like.  I don' t know what kind of internet plan you're on, but if it's anything like the kind of cell-phone plans you have in the States, I don't want to be blowing your caps or burning your money more than necessary.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

12 gigs is pretty huge, if there's any way to compress it down to 500 megs or so, maybe less, that'd be awesome.

What kind of system are you on? Mac / PC? Any video editing software, Quicktime Pro?

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Sure, I'll try.  I have Mac, Windows and Linux systems around the house, with at least what they come with by default, but most of my pro software is for audio and composing (Cubase, Sibelius) not video editing as such.

Oh, wait, I do have Handbrake installed, which I use to rip DVDs to my iPod, and I'm sure it has a pile of format conversion options.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

If you could play with it a bit, I'd be much obliged. If nothin's working, lemme know, and we can figure out options.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Converting your selects to h.264 or x264 (same-ish thing without getting into it) around 85% quality will give you a lot of space savings and hold up the quality pretty well.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Okay, I managed to get all the principal shots processed down to about 125MB; they're uploading now.

Next, I'll be going through the driving-around shots, and I expect to upload those within a few hours.

You might have to pull moving silence from the window shot, as the only explicit silence we captured was background noise while parked, since we inadvertently shot one of the scenes with the door open.

Re: DIF Community Project: DIF Road Trip!

Having now completed the arduous process of filming my stuff, I believe I am now more than qualified to provide valuable notes on my contribution, despite not having seen the whole script.

I believe my 'speaking in tongues' scene should have sub-titles: first, Japanese, then Greek, then Klingon, then Dingbats. The last sub-title should be "Oh, ho! Let's go!"

I believe the scene where I solve the Rubik's cube in under seven minutes (apart from that one corner, which doesn't count anyway) should be left uncut, so as to raise the project from merely artistic to almost wikipedian.

The inexplicably unasked-for shot where I'm riding on the roof of a blazing car as it careens down a hill should clearly be the last of the movie. Although I disagree, I would understand your decision to cut before we hit the ice cream van.

I think the credits should be done in the style of 'Dallas', only with more Hagman.

I hope this helps.

Oh, and for everyone else who hasn't read the script either: spoilers!

Ok, well, didn't plan on my wife feeling ill today and having to take a break from work.

Sorry again but it will be done tomorrow around 5:30 PST. Should have it uploaded that evening.

I hope that works for you.

Pretty sure it's impossible to solve a Rubik's Cube except for one corner. You'd have to leave two corners unsolved, at least. Unless you fucked up your cube.
