Topic: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

So, the recent Intermission was very much focused on the Oscars, with the teams favourites being thrown around, and who they'd vote for.

So I was wondering whether we could take the nominations from each category (or maybe the shortlist), all vote on what we think mosts deserves the award and then present (okay, virtually present) the award to the winner of the most votes, meaning that we effectivly find a consensus within the community about the best picture, best director etc.. .Oh, and judging by recent events, the forum loves voting on stuff.

Any thoughts whether this would be a good idea or not?

Too much garbage in your face?  There's plenty of space in space!

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

I have some thoughts, but I'll wait until more folks chip in. I too am interested to see what folks think.

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

I think this idea works better once the format change is in place, and the kids are regularly reviewing current films rather than oldies-but-goodies.

Perhaps DiF could give it's awards irrespective of the Oscar nominations? I'd take much more notice of the five best musicals as voted by the panel than anything the academy came up with. The community here has enough experience and audacity to lead rather than follow.

There could be trophies, with gilt edges and everything, sent to the respective production companies (as you saw fit and donations allowed).

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

I really like this idea. But could we do it in a less-complicated way than the actual Oscars? Preferential balloting might make Phi's head might explode.

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

It might be pretty easy to build a multiple choice page where you pick your winners.

I say might, because it's not like I fuckin' know. But it might.

  Show
It is.

Edit: Okay, we're going to actually do this. If someone can compile me all of the short lists, I'll use those. Otherwise, we're just going to do the nominees.

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

I don't believe they release the shortlists for every category, so maybe it should just be the nominees.

They do, but jesus christ, who wants to wade through a re-vote for a dozen potential nominees for every category?  Highly qualified people already did that for us.

Also, preferential ballots are just for nominations.  Once the nominations are in, it's just a normal "pick one of these five" vote to decide the winner.  Which could be simulated here by a simple poll for each category.

Does this board have a polling function?   If so, turn the categories into polls, only one selection in each category allowed, done.  No heavy math to do, the poll itself does what little math there is.

And for everyone's sake, if we're doing this, can we skip some categories?   I wouldn't know who to pick for best foreign animated cartoon sound design anymore than the rest of you do.

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

It does, but I believe it would require a new thread for each category, and I really don't want to make ten new threads.

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

Fair enough. Just wanted to make sure that if you're gonna do some custom-codey business, it doesn't have to be fancy preferential voting.  smile

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

So, what we need is a poll page that does all the choices for every category. You can only vote once on any category, and if you don't vote at all for a category, that's also cool.

If that's tricky, the alternative would be an "abstain" option for every category so Trey doesn't have to bone up on foreign animated cartoon sound design.

Yeah, because clearly I'm the only one who hasn't seen all the documentary short subjects.   But I'll sit back while the rest of ya discuss them.  wink

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

Can we renominate some of the categories? Nobody here thinks Incredibly Loud, Extremely Close or whatever it's called was a better flick than Drive.

Re: The DiF Oscars (Idea)

For the LCCs I found limesurvey rather adaptable. All the other polling software options I looked at were too basic. Specifically I was looking for something that could rank options, but limesurvey also does multiple choice and you can set it up to allow non-answers. If anything, it might be overkill.

We could just rename it to "Best Documentary Short Subject Title"

I vote for "The Barber of Birmingham: Foot Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement"

No, but it had Tom Hanks and nobody saw Larry Crowne.
