Topic: Misleading Movie Titles

I'm getting really sick of movie titles lying to me. Just off the top of my head:

Blade Runner wasn't about a marathon track made of razor blades.

The Dark Knight wasn't a sequel to Black Knight starring Martin Lawrence.

Rain Man wasn't about a man who could control the weather.

A Clockwork Orange wasn't about a citrus powered time machine.

Space Jam wasn't about cosmic fruit preserves.

Heat wasn't about a hot day and contained no references to Dwyane Wade, LeBron James or Chris Bosh.

Inside Man wasn't about a colonoscopy.

To Kill A Mockingbird wasn't about the correct way to hunt and kill Northern Mockingbirds.

500 Days Of Summer wasn't about global warming.

Cool Hand Luke had nothing to do with the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker's dismembered hand in the Cloud City ventilation system.

What about you all? Any movies that you felt criminally lied to you with their misleading titles?

Gravity featured almost none.

Solaris had nothing to do with Sun Microsystems' clunky OS.

This one is my biggest pet peeve. Same thing with the book. Totally off.

I always found Ten Commandments to be incredibly frustrating. They don't even show up until the end! What was the last 5 hours about?!

Also, Star Trek: The Voyage Home...unless home is turn of the century San Francisco, not even close to the topic of the film.

God loves you!

Re: Misleading Movie Titles

SWAT is not a sequel to The Fly.

V for Vendetta is not a sequel to Dial M for Murder.

The protagonist of Dirty Harry doesn't seem to have problems with personal hygiene.

Can we include TV shows? Knight Rider is definitely not about a medieval chick who liked the cowgirl position.

An actual one- Abbott and Costello Go To Mars. They don't, they go to Venus.

Back to the Future?
More like back to the present day, except I selfishly changed a bunch of stuff to improve my own life, to the detriment of others.

Bruce Almighty?
How about Bruce 'allowed to be in charge of the greater metropolitan area for like a week'?

X-Men: The Last Stand
In what way was that at all the last of anything X-related?

I might suck at this. Sorry, I tried.

As Good As It Gets, it's turns out, had a number of areas that could have been slightly improved.

Re: Misleading Movie Titles

I hate to say this, but The Neverending Story quite clearly does end, in both the book and movie. An Elaborate Series of Interconnecting Tales might have been a better title, for the book at least.

Neither The Man Without a Face nor The Man Who Wasn't There was a Trey Stokes biopic.  hmm

As a mild enthusiast of artificial bodies of water I couldn't have been more disappointed to discover that Reservoir Dogs was set almost entirely in a warehouse.

Bourne Ultimatum had no ultimatum in it.

Brazil.... wtf?

Primer was a movie not even slightly relative to painting walls, or the steps necessary to do so.

Star Wars featured no wars between stars.

IT had nothing to do with Information Technology whatsoever

Resident Evil wasn't about an evil resident.

Pulp Fiction wasn't fictional material based on fruit pulp.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon... Don't get me started.

And Lionel Hutz sued them for false advertising over it, don't forget.  So justice was done there.

Personally, I was disappointed by how close they kept to the script in Say Anything.  Maybe because it was a writer-director.

Re: Misleading Movie Titles

Troll 2 famously featured goblins and not trolls.

Beetlejuice has almost nothing at all to do with the guts of any insects.

Inherit the Wind is not about a probate case in which wind is a part of the deceased's estate.

I'm pretty sure no one lost or found a whole entire planet in either The Lost World or The New World.

By the end of The Muppets Take Manhattan, one would be hard-pressed to argue that the Muppets have taken even a significant portion of Manhattan.

Layer Cake has nothing to do with baking a delicious dessert. It is about gangsters.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Brazil was not set there.

Skyfall was not a gritty re-imagining of Chicken Little.

Not even joking. I was thinking of this last night.

And what about How I Met your Mother? Probably the most egregious offender to date as we have NEVER met the mother and should have been called How I slept with a bunch of girls and got all these STDs. Don't do this kids

It is the future to 1955 Doc Brown, though and it is he who says the line to 1985 Marty. It makes perfect sense in that context smile

Apocalypse Now - No apocalypse. Not now, not ever.
The Breakfast Club - No breakfast. No club.
Goodfellas - Seemed like pretty bad fellas actually.
Home Alone 2 - No one in this movie was ever home alone.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World - Should be Scott Pilgrim vs. 7 people.

I don't know, should I? Should I be a smartarse dick? Oh sure-

The Breakfast Club refers to the fact that they are there in Saturday morning detention. And there is a group of them, hence 'club'.  The subtitle to Home Alone 2 is 'Lost In New York' which is what the actual story is. They just use Home Alone 2 because it's the second film.

I'm sorry, I am so so sorry big_smile

Re: Misleading Movie Titles

Yes I know what The Breakfast Club means. But you wouldn't have any idea if the title was all you heard, just like Rain Man and The Dark Knight. And Home Alone 2 is just the second film, but that doesn't make it right!  wink
