Imagine if they had cast a woman and male fans reacted that way. The outcries of "MISOGYNY!" and "MALE PRIVILEGE!" would overload tumblr and fucking Jezebel would have to write a series of articles about the "appearance shaming" of actresses.

I don't remember all of the logical fallacies, but I'm pretty sure this is one of them.

Yeah, I'm so glad we don't cast Doctor Who actors based on appearance!

Oh...wait...

And let us not forget Jamie was cast for the ladies, the actor telling cameramen to never get an angle that showed if he wore anything under his kilt to keep the mystery alive.

Yeah, Moffat's a dick. What does that have to do with me thinking those people moaning about Capaldi are pathetic?

Just pointing out that "fangirls who started watching in 2005" aren't the only ones who make judgements based on how hot someone is.

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

Because looks do matter when it comes to casting. If they actually do a Wonder Woman movie, don't you think the looks of every actress remotely considered will be gone over by "fans" in great detail? My sister was a casual fan of the new Who only because of number 10. She knew the show, having watched old Who with me, but hates shows with continuity because she doesn't have time to keep up. So, once that the regeneration gave us a Doctor she didn't think was cute, she stopped caring. I'm sure you'll get the same thing here, balanced by new fans coming in. That's how Doctor Who works.

It's the internet. You're going to get stupid bitching about everything.

Fair enough, not sure why, though, as nobody has actually denied that being the case. I'm glad they cast Capaldi, I personally don't care if they cast attractive people in any role. I don't find Catherine Tate particularly attractive but I liked her in the role of Donna. The fact that I personally find Karen Gillan attractive is merely just a 'bonus', I would still have watched series 5 and 6 regardless of who they cast as the companion.

But then I am neither a teenage girl or a horny middle aged showrunner, so what do I know?

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

Agreed, Jimmy. Catherine Tate is a perfect example of casting someone who may not be "pretty" in a young-skinny-sexy way but who was fantastic in her role. Fuck, Baker wasn't pretty. He's an ugly bastard, yet he's so many people's favorite Doctor.

I mean, I'm a teenage girl and I find Capaldi hot, but I can't really speak for the group.

I hope for another Doctor/Companion relationship like 10/Donna's. I hate all these "you are a mystery I must solve" arcs. I just want someone funny and tough and fairly normal.

Agreed smile

I'm sure the dynamic will change with the 12th and Clara as there is no mystery about her any more we may have that again given the 12th will have a different personality. If not, I'm sure Clara will only be around for one series and we'll get someone else anyway.

Agreed. I think Capaldi is a great choice, for many reasons, but he reminds me so much of earlier Doctor actors and it might be a return to that style of storytelling.

Also, I think we might see a return of the Doctor's intolerance of human stupidity, much like Gandalf and his dealings with Pippin in LOTR.

Considering I've yet to find someone, anyone, who started a description of what they like about Amy Pond with anything other than her physical attractiveness...I guess that worked out exactly like he thought.

Chalk it up to yet another thing Moffat did that hobbled the series during his run.

(that's not a knock on Karen Gillian, but rather on the story/character aspects that were likely borne out of the fact that the companion was a model)

THIS. THIS. THIS. THIS. THIS.

I'd also add that the 9/Rose relationship was also more grounded, nor particularly romantic.

Meanwhile, in other news, nine missing episodes featuring the second Doctor have been found, and are already available on iTunes.

Re: Doctor Who is awesome, yeah?

And given the earlier rumor, and the way the BBC is being so secretive about all this, there's a chance there could be more. Damn, I'm happy. Bought both stories this morning, the first movie or TV series I've bought from iTunes.

(I'm amused by the BBC response to those in the UK asking why they have to pay to see it, as it was made with viewer money so they should get at least one free TV airing. The BBC rep said those who paid the TV licensing fee were able to watch them in 1968, so that debt is paid)
