Topic: The Wilhelm Scream

Do you love it, or hate it? Indifferent or is it loathing obnoxious?

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

Personally, speaking as a film fan but not in the industry, I love it. It makes me laugh, though I can see while some would not want it since it can take you out of the movie. I actually just rewatched "Captain America" and it was in there. I had forgotten it was, and that is one of the things I like about it. Its cool yet kind of forgettable once the moment is past.

God loves you!

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

I am so fucking sick of it. Every time I hear in a movie these days, I can't help but roll my eyes and go "Seriously guys? You went there?".

I probably shouldn't, but I kinda lose a little bit of respect for the movie/filmmaker whenever I hear it these days.

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

I like the legacy but I recognise it all the time and it's starting to annoy me. That and this one-

I'm sure there's another one too that does the rounds but I can't find it anywhere.

I love it,... every time I hear it I smile and say, "[there's a] Wilhelm!"

Yep.
I'm curious to know people's favorite Wilhelm moments, or cringe worthy ones.

Sorry, sir, the game is be more specific...such as, that one were the Imperial officer gets knocked in to the shield generator or:

  Show
The one in the Hobbit.

Maybe someone should copyright it again wink

ALL OF THEM.

Or if you wanna get more accurate. Each occurrence fans the flames of hatred in my soul, such that they have amassed into a ball of plasmatic hatred, the scope of which NML Cygni would be jealous.

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

It's cute for a few seconds but sometimes its use is really out of place and it can break the illusion as you recall that yup, you are in fact watching a movie.

I love it, it always makes me smile when it pops up. Unless it's done as a knowing wink where its used as a sound effect. I've seen that a couple of times.

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

Most of the times, I like it, unless it's really dumb. It has to be discreet and preferably modified a bit. I got angry at the Starcraft 2 : Heart of the Swarm trailer, because it had a very loud and stupid Wilhelm scream shouted by a Space Marine. It just felt off.

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

It's noticeable in The Hobbit during the 'Escape from the Goblin City' sequence. Would rather it not there, as the joke is wearing thin. Comedians' #1 Rule is don't use the same joke more than three times.

not long to go now...

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

I'm growing tired of it. It's not a cool inside joke that only cinephiles know anymore, because every blockbuster director since Spielberg has used it, assuming they were being clever. The Hobbit didn't need a Wilhelm scream. What's the point? When I first started recognizing it, I felt so cool, like I was seeing a secret that only film buffs knew. Now, the joke is wearing thin.

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

I was answering questions on Reddit the other day in some VFX thread, and someone asked me if there was a VFX equivalent of the Wilhelm.

I thought that was an outstanding question.

Here was my answer:

Great question.

Short answer, no, not really. Longer answer... for a long time, there wasn't a nearly infinite number of explosion stock plate to use. We used what existed, and we used them repeatedly. For a long time. To this day, many of us recognize particular explosions. "Oh, that's ReelFire #56!" Shit like that. Now that there are more plates, and also fluid sims that can do fairly useful fire FX, it's not so much of a thing. And it was never intended to be a running gag, it was just a limitation.

I will tell you this: we, as a group, are particularly dubious of fads. There's a plugin called Shine that was used to death for like six straight years there, and we rolled our eyes hardcore at it for the last five of those years. You've seen it, too. When something onscreen (usually text) has these attractive "rays of light" blasting out of it and sweeping past the camera? Yeah, that's Trapcode Shine. We got properly sick of that real quick.

The current one is lens flares, and it only got worse when Andrew Kramer released his (absolutely outstanding) Optical Flares plugin that lets you design very ornate and realistic lens flares and put them on anything. Thanks to JJ and Bay, and Andrew Kramer, we've been using lens flares a lot for the past few years. Sometimes voluntarily, sometimes not.

I'll spoil the future for you, too: my bet is the next one that's gonna take off is chromatic aberration. It's a beautiful thing that happens in lenses sometimes, and I personally love it right now. In a few years? Maybe not.

Basically, if an effect is

1. Attractive
2. Not unattractive
3. Easy
4. Able to be slapped onto damn near anything

you can bet it'll become something that FX artists start hating.

Alas, as for running gags, not so much... although we do still like to put The Utah Teapot in things if we can get away with it.

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

I think Wilhelms are a hybirid of, "Where's Waldo?" and saying, "Bless you," after someone sneezes. Once you hear the Wilhelm in a film, you're done with that part of the experience. Prior to that though, it's foreplay in anticipation of when the Sound Designer will finally let you finish.

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

I don't so much hate it as "... oh look, they used that sound" and then i go on.

I probably don't watch as many movies as some of you is why I haven't moved to it being actually annoying,

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

The one time I've really hated it was when it was used in Return of the King. Really destroyed the tension for me.

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

I dunno if it's just because I'm so familiar with the scream that it seems this way, but I feel as if the wilhelm is higher up in the mix in a lot of modern movies as opposed to being at the same level as any other scream. I dunno, I could be wrong.

It's not just you Owen. I swear the one in the Hobbit was the loudest thing in the mix.

Re: The Wilhelm Scream

I think its the pitch of the scream as to why it stands out. It is just so unsettling in its pitch and dissonant sound that it registers in the brain in a weird way.
