Re: Suggest a movie!

I know it's too late for the October horror-fest, but I'd love to see the guys take on The Serpent and the Rainbow.

I can't tell if you're joking or not, Teague. The Serpent & The Rainbow is one film. It's a voodoo Horror film from the 80s' directed by Wes Craven and starring Bill Pullman.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Has somebody said Dreamcatcher yet? Because I'm watching it now, and talk about multiple magic beans.... This movie is about 4 completely different ideas smooshed together, and it couldn't find a consistent tone with a pitch pipe.

But its provenance is gold: Stephen King, William Goldman, Lawrence Kasdan, and an A-list cast that includes Morgan Freeman AND Tom Sizemore as black ops helicopter pilots.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

Ooooh, yeah! That could be a solid, fun episode!

Also, I like the word "smooshed". Makes me smile. smile

Re: Suggest a movie!

I saw DREAMCATCHER in a free sneak peek at college and the whole crowd was in hysterics. It was free, so no one felt ripped off, and we were in college, so we were going to waste that time anyway, so we all just sat back and became enraptured by the glorious, raving absurdity.

Believe it or not, it's actually an improvement on the source material. Goldman and Kasdan, pros that they are, managed to wrestle the book into a relatively satisfying cinematic structure with a clear beginning, middle, and end (including changing the ending completely).

But they're starting from what is easily one of King's most lunatic novels -- immediately post-accident he was pretty well off the reservation. They're trying to be faithful to the material for some reason, and there's only so far you can make it work with a straight face when the canonical term for the monsters in your story is "shit-weasels."

Imagine how disastrous it would have been without the high pedigree it has, if you dare.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I love how the alien talks like an upper-crust Englishman. No matter how wacky and Tromaesque that movie is, there are still genuine moments of terror, atmosphere and creativity that cannot be denied.

Even when King's all fucked up, he's still a hell of a writer.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Not sure if it's been suggested at any point in this thread, but Paranormal Activity might be an interesting episode - possibly Paranormal Activity 2, since it seems like the rare big-budget sequel to low-budget sleeper hit that actually works. Plus, a chance to talk about found-footage movies, how viral marketing effects the indie movie industry, and more.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Paranormal Activity 2 is really underrated, IMO. Some of the scares are more subtle, and they really did their best to keep the concept fresh, instead of just rehashing the first film.

Agreed. I've been completely shocked with how well they've treated the franchise. After the first one's out-of-nowhere success, I assumed we'd get a big-budget rehash sequel with no dignity. But they've managed 2 great prequels that add to the series mythos, and actually create realistic situations for "Found Footage" style movies.

Not to mention, I've yet to have more fun in a theater than a midnight showing of a Paranormal Activity movie.
