Re: Best match of character and actor?

So, how about actors and roles where they unexpectedly played the best game of catch-the-javelin that no-one thought they could do, because it was so different from their previous body of work? For example:

Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie
Meryl Streep in Postcards from the Edge
Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper in Doctor Who
Greg Kinnear in As Good As It Gets

Doc is right. Peggs best acting is a guy who is little insecure and "lost". Like he does in Shaun of the Dead and in Paul. Hot Fuzz is excellent movie but I think because the satire is so spot on. My favorite of the three but Pegg is acting fine because he is good actor. I just think more natural role to him is Shaun or Graeme. Actually he is good in new Star Trek too.

Sorry but you are all so very very wrong.

Simon Pegg.

Really?  Sandra Bullock in SPEED?  Anyone could have played that part and it would have been the exact same movie.

I disagree, she gives the role (and the movie) a surpising amount of heart, and her chemistry with Keanu and the other actors on the bus is arguably what makes the film more than just the sum of its simple concept.  I can't think of any other actress at that time that could have pulled off the role, and for me this will always be the role that I most associate her with.

And I think that's arguably what this thread is about, the match between the actor and character being so effective that it's the first role that pops into your head whenever you think or see the actor.

I'm not sure if I agree; is it acting when you just play yourself?

That would be like me playing David in the (frankly boring) story of David from Melbourne. Hardly a stretch.

Re: Best match of character and actor?

I don't know, I'm getting confused on exactly what is meant by 'best match'. Is it literal, with the actor being most like the character and is therefore perfect to play it (the role thus being the most accurate representation of themselves). Is it that the actor was the absolute best possible casting for that character? Or is it that the actor's personality and the role meld in such a way that a truly great character is born?

Re: Best match of character and actor?

I believe it means that out of the vast and expansive pool of actors out there and in the world the casting director found the perfect person to play that role. So therefore in my opinion, if they literally found "the guy" then they found the PERFECT actor for that role. Which means both Simon Pegg and RDJ (as Tony Stark) are the perfect examples for this thread. Because anyone else cast in those roles would instantly make you go, well why the hell didn't they get Simon Pegg or RDJ for this one? (Respectively)

Re: Best match of character and actor?

It's often hard to judge though unless you have another example of the character to compare it to. I think that's why I almost never look at a movie and think, "that's bad acting". I always tend to assume that's the way the character is suppose to act, and that it's just a stupid character smile

Re: Best match of character and actor?

Robin Williams in Good Morning, Vietnam. It's a bit of cheating, because Williams basically ad-libbed the whole movie. But could you imagine someone else doing that?

TV shows have good instances too: Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. Having seen season 1 of the show first, when I read the books, the other actors starting to fade a bit as I built the universe of A Song of Ice and Fire in my mind - but not Tyrion. It'll always be Dinklage. He's nailing it, really.

EDIT: The Superman movies are far from perfect, but Christopher Reeve is really convincing as the flying boyscout from Krypton.

Sean Connery, for all the bad of LXG, does a fantastic job. Thomas Crown Affair is one of those weird films that I really grew in to and started to appreciate from a film making perspective, with the bowler hat scene and the craziness of the whole thing.

Re: Best match of character and actor?

Some good selections here: Tim Curry as FnF, Depp as Sparrow, Viggo as Aragorn. Talk about nailing it.

I'd like to nominate Anthony Hopkins for two roles which are essentially the same character i.e. the world-weary intellectual billionaire that's always thinking about something greater than what the current conversation is about, so he has a far-off look that seems like he's only giving you some of his attention. The movies are The Edge and Meet Joe Black.
Hopkins has got that character down pat - he can phone it in and still be 100X as good as anyone else. Effortless presence. Some people just have it. No need for animated histrionics.

Compare De Niro in HEAT with Pacino in HEAT. Cool, calm and intense trumps showy shouting.

not long to go now...

I can't see anyone else nailing The Narrator in Fight Club. Try to imagine, like, Matt Damon or Leo... My brain doesn't allow it.

And, of course, Bill Murray in Ghostbusters.
