Topic: On comedy

I thought this was pretty interesting, and it's not something I'd considered before.

Re: On comedy

It takes him almost 9 minutes to express the idea that since the Bible is devoid of comedy that comedy gets no respect in Western culture and isn't treated as art...which I am not sure is entirely true, but I do believe his is right, dramatic film is generally too serious these days and that comedy isn't valued enough as a seasoning in most projects. Gone Girl has a lot of comedic moments worked into in it, despite being an insanely intense film.

From 14 minutes on he's spot on though. Comedy is an artform with rules, that works best in the hands of someone experienced enough to know when to violate those rules for maximum effect.

Re: On comedy

There's comedy all over the Bible. Most of it just gets lost, or ignored, when translated. Tons of amusing wordplay in the Hebrew scriptures. And, I have to be honest, I think George Carlin was on to something when he claimed it was after Peter tried to walk on water like Jesus and sank that he was given the name Peter ("And upon this Rock I shall build my church")

Re: On comedy

Seconded: There is tons of humor in the Bible. And, in lots of other Western literature and culture. You'll find it easier to make the argument exclusively about the USA and it's Puritan roots.

That said, I have ached for years to see Romeo and Juliet performed with the jokes acknowledged. I have a true and deep need to see it performed properly.

I post because I care.

I highly recommend checking out the American Shakespeare Center (formerly Shenandoah Shakespeare Express) if you don't mind taking a trip to Virginia for some really quality theater. They do go on tour, but they don't usually hit up the West Coast. Some of the best Shakespeare you'll see Stateside, their production of Romeo & Juliet was just amazing, and yes, very funny. Somehow my school managed to snag a performance several years running (a great coup for a small women's college), and each time it was a delight. These people really, really know their stuff.

Re: On comedy

It sounds like it was amazing. I first read the play in high school and was blown away that it was so different from the mainstream versions (new and old, both). I think I need a video version, though.  big_smile
