Trey, is it too late to shoot more material? I just had a brilliant idea to add 7 minutes to the movie.

Re: 2010: Moby Dick.

I haven't seen anything from 2010: Moby Dick beyond the trailer but that hasn't prevented me from listening to the commentary. I'm fascinated with Asylum and many of their flicks have provided laughs for me over the past couple of years. It is quite cool that two guys on the DiF panel played prominent roles in the production of one of Asylum's glorious mockbusters. I was hoping you could provide insight on something.

What's the deal with Dean Kreyling?

http://i51.tinypic.com/104qes1.jpg

I have seen him in around six different Asylum movies and each time he entertains the crap out of me. His brief role as a submarine captain in Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus was the highlight of the movie for me and my friends. Why is he in so many of Asylum's movies? Is he a relative or a friend of someone high up in the studio or does he simply enjoy the cheesy humor so much that he keeps auditioning for everything they make? Also, is there any way to get in contact with him? I'd really like to send the guy a letter of appreciation because the man deserves to know how much entertainment he has provided with his fantastically hilarious side-characters.

Re: 2010: Moby Dick.

Well, my my.  Best non-human, best Actor and Best Feature?   Awesome.   Curious to see what the actual results are tomorrow.

I gotta check out Sherlock Holmes (Asylum version).  I hear it's kinda wacky fun.  And the steampunk robot thingie that appears in the movie is prominently displayed in the Asylum lobby to this day, it's pretty nifty.

Rachel Goldenberg was prepping Princess and Pony while we were in post on Moby, so I saw her around the office a lot.  She seems nice.  If she ends up taking the coveted Best Director award, I'm okay widdit.

Re: Dean Kreyling, apparently he's just somebody Asylum likes working with.  Mike Gaglio and Matt Lagan are two other Asylum veterans who appeared in Moby as well, nice guys all.    None of them came in to audition, the Asylum honchos just cast them according to type.  I didn't meet any of them myself until they came to set.

But they all knew what to do, I just pointed a camera at 'em. smile

Re: 2010: Moby Dick.

Results are out.....
Bostwick pulls in the Best Actor, but otherwise, Mega Piranha sweeps the field!

Committed Loonie results

Well, I'm sure it's an ironic honor just being nominated. Trey, thank all the little people.

/feverishly begins work on even lower-budget knockoff Mega Piranha Attack!

This is now streaming on Netflix, by the way. Which is awesome if you're like me and it's been lingering in your queue for months, forgotten because you have the tendency to get way too excited about something you see and immediately move it to the top.

Re: 2010: Moby Dick.

This is for Trey. I don't know if anyone has told you this or if you have read it yourself but Moby Dick is briefly 'reviewed' in this month's Empire magazine. It is in the section 'Kim Newman's Video Dungeon' where he picks straight to home video movies and tells you if he feels they are worth a rent or not. Newman is a  respected crtic in the UK (just in case anybody doesn't know). He reviews Dinocroc Vs Supergator then-

There's more entertainment to be had from Moby Dick, though the fun in The Asylum's typically shoddy replay of the Ahab Vs. Dick story mostly comes from Barry Bostwick as a one-legged nuclear sub skipper out to even the score with the big white and enough dialogue gems to keep us in quotes all year...

He then quotes his favourite lines from the film. His quote of the month for the article is 'He took my leg. I don't intend to give him my ass.'  smile

Seeing movies like this becomes problem while living in Finland. HUGE problem to find it. DAMN!

Watching movies is like being drunk. First it is great but most of the times it ends poorly.

Torrents? Maybe? I don't know how big the underground Asylum film-trading scene is.

I'd like to live in a world where it is handled exclusively by the directors of said films.

What are you talking about!? That looks amazing! Did that guy just punch a helicopter?! Hell, it looks like it'll be more fun (and more believable) than the official 3 Musketeers film their making:

I was not involved in that project, however I was a witness to the exact moment of its creation.

We were in the midst of post on Moby, and one of the Asylum honchos was in the editing room waiting to look at the cut.  He was thumbing through Variety, and I distinctly remember him saying "Huh, they're remaking Three Musketeers.  We definitely should do that one."

The Asylum:  It Works Just Like You Think It Does

Re: 2010: Moby Dick.

In other Moby news, I just received this email:

Dear  Trey Stokes.

My name is Rey Sanchez, I´m 27 years old and I´m Professor
of "Films & Motion Pictures" at a local university: http://www.unellez.edu.ve

I´d like to know if you can send me as a donation (by Postal Service)
the following DVD-Film directed by Trey Stokes: 2010 Moby Dick (2010)

I need this DVD-Film, in order to get better my classes, because
I´m working on a project with my students based on the study of
Trey Stokes´s  film directing.

The DVD-Film will be used for educational purposes only.
If you wish to help me, you can use the following postal address:

How about that?  There's a Venezuelan "Films and Motion Pictures" class devoted to my work!  Or I guess there WILL be such a class, just as soon as I send them my work to study.

This is really flattering and in no way a scam, because if you Google this guy you will find he's also a "Professor of Musicology" who needs Pink Floyd CD's.  The guy holds TWO professorships, people!

Having seen both trailers, I would suggest that the Asylum one is the more artistically daring, since it re-interprets a classic story in the modern world, whereas The 3D Musketeers just looks like a John Woo movie in period costumes; Lace/Off, if you will.

Re: 2010: Moby Dick.

Re-interpreting the classics can be interesting. There's a local production of the musical 'Oliver' that sets it in the 1930's dustbowl and gives the music a western twang. Mind you, it can also go horribly wrong smile

Re: 2010: Moby Dick.

It's obvious that the Asylum modernizes classics because it's much cheaper than making period costumes and sets. It used to be just the opposite for the Brits, who had lots of Shakespearean costumes and old buildings lying around. (But Ian McKellan's Richard III was brought up to the 1940s and worked brilliantly.)

But I don't think any of the Musketeers movies have worked very well (including the Michael York one, IMO). I suspect the problem is that the story is a rip-roaring action tale, and any movie director who is good at doing action is no good at period drama, so they make the characters too ironic and flippant and self-aware. Anderson will be no exception.

They should make a movie about the candy bar instead.

My friends over at Mike and Ike's All Star Summer Jamboree podcast are interviewing Barry Bostwick soon (Some Guy Who Kills People). I suggested they ask him how it was to work with Trey Stokes on 2010 Moby Dick.

Re: 2010: Moby Dick.

The Asylum is gearing up for their 15th anniversary celebration (yes, they've been successful for 15 years and counting, deal with it) and they've just released a teaser pic of their 15th anniversary poster.

With a hundred of their movies to choose from, lookie which one they featured front and center.   Yeah, baby!
