Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day

I'd never seen more than 3 minutes of Torchwood before, but this was fun. I'll keep watching.

The Bill Pullman legal bunk was eye-rolling, tho.

Is it still as gay as the original? That aspect of what Russell Davis brought to Who got to be a bit old, and I gathered Torchwood was even more so (I only saw the crossovers).

It's on Starz, right? In that case, I'll wait for it to come to Netflix streaming. I don't watch Torchwood, but I'm a big Who fan.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day

Haven't gotten into Torchwood, didn't much enjoy the plots relating to Torchwood I've seen in Who.

Fun fact: Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who, and from what I understand it was the original fake name they put on the scripts so people didn't lose their shit if they stumbled across the set.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day

I feel like you need to watch (at the very least) Children of Earth before this. There are a lot of spots that make more sense having seen Season 3, even if they're not important to the plot. I will give Davies a lot of credit, though: he did a pretty good job of combining elements of American TV into the series without taking too much away from what makes TW what it is.

Although Jack was certainly not flamboyant enough for me in this episode.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day

The conventional wisdom is that the Torchwood series was written badly. To wrap it up, they created the "Children of Earth" miniseries. But people absolutely went nuts for "Children of Earth," from die-hard-old-school Who fans who hated Torchwood to my stepmother. So bringing it to Starz was their way of starting over and trying to make it good.

I figure if I like the reboot, I'll buy Children of Earth and have the grounding I need to understand what's going on, thereby avoiding the early Russell T Davies crapfest episodes entirely.

Re: Torchwood: Miracle Day

I liked the original Torchwood well enough, but it still had that early NewWho stench about it, but Children of Earth was awesome, and I nearly freaking started drooling on the floor with how much I loved the Miracle Day premiere. But I do agree, Jack was nowhere near flamboyant enough.

I'm actually really quite surprised at how well Miracle Day would work for those who know nothing about Torchwood, if anything it would actually make it a little more like the mystery they're trying to set up through the first episode with the whole; "Who is Torchwood?" thing they've got going.

After episode 3, it leapfrogged Will & Grace and is now gayer than Glee and moving into Queer as Folk territory.

I complained the first two weeks about Jack not being gay enough. Roommate turns to me after this episode and goes: "Gay enough now?"
