I'm not sure how many of you heard about this fallout short, but apparently it was pretty huge on the web this past January. I just watched it for the first time, and I think it's not as awesome as some seem to think. Am I alone on this?
Watch it if you like and tell me what you think.
Heh. I worked on this a bit, I did the opening title shot and the blend to the CG billboard (the one in the thumbnail) and related tracking for that lil' sequence. That's all, just the title and billboard. Knocked it out in an evening in a hurry.
I like it alright, I'm not big on Zack's acting, but I get a kick out of Kevin Brooks (the guy who reads the bounty out loud in the fight) and the junkyard guy. Most of the DIF crew knows most of these guys, they come to our parties and stuff.
That said, I don't know anything about Fallout, or what those fanboys expect to see. I can certainly imagine people blowing it out of proportion.
Other than the fact that I have no idea what the hell this is about, I think it's great.
However, I second Teague's skepticism of Zack's acting. And Scarlett doesn't look like she's been wandering the desert for more than about seven minutes.
The merchant guy tho, he can act.
It was... okay.
The short doesn't really resemble much of what is actually in fallout.
Characters aren't nearly as stupid or clumsy as in this short. Fallout is delightfully twisted.

This being said, I think that short is the closest I'll ever get to a live action movie of Fallout.
PS: Teague, you should play Bioshock (or PORRTTTAAAALLL). just cuz
the effects shots you mentioned Teague didn't feel to me like effects shots, even though I kinda figured they had to be. Good work on that. The effects weren't really what I had a problem with though. The whole short plays a bit too cute considering they are supposed to be in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. You'd figure there would at least be a character or two playing it serious straight.
As far as production values go, it's pretty damn good. The prop laser rifle is spot fucking on. I do agree it needs to be darker though. Fallout has a brilliant blend of dark as shit subject matter and gallows humor that this short lacks. Regardless, it's still pretty good though.
As a fan of the original Fallout games, I don't care for Nuka Break.
I really tried to love fallout 3. I played it for two weeks in hope of it getting good at one point. It did not. This film, however, was fun
