Re: Tropic Thunder

Heyyyy, this isn't Tron Legacy! SHENANIGANS!!!!

I said it elsewhere, but Tropic Thunder plays like Judd Apatow films for me, even the ones he just produces: Funny once, especially in a crowded theater of people laughing hysterically. But then I watch it again at home by myself....and it's just, flat, awkward and kind of boring. Regardless, RDJ is consistently amazing in this film. He was so good, The Academy HAD TO nominate him for an Oscar, and it's a comedy! They almost never do that these days! smile

Re: Tropic Thunder

I always found the controversy over the "full retard" line akin to the people who got angry at Randy Newman because they thought he actually hated short people.

Re: Tropic Thunder

Retar... uhm.... various... challenged people (and those in their vincinity) tend to simply hate the word retard per se... doesn't matter how humorous or "good willing" the context, the fact that anybody ever uses that word for any reason, is insulting to them.

I can actually have a small bit of understanding for that; it's so fundamentally insulting somehow.

Then again.... you could just consider those morons thinking that retards themselves. smile

Re: Tropic Thunder

In the 80's, iirc, there was a local uproar from the mental health community over a radio station ad that said about listening to the station, "Nuts if you do, Nuts if you don't". Some groups are very thin skinned.

Re: Tropic Thunder

I love this movie. If only for the line "What do you mean you people?" I'm with Teague with the bit with the severed head and it's consistency with the rest of the film, but overall, I love it.

Re: Tropic Thunder

Haven't listened to all of the commentary yet, but I'm very much on the same page as Teague. There are moments in this that are really good, but as a whole it doesn't work.
