I can't ever participate in a discussion like this without bringing up Masters of the Universe with Dolph Lundgren. Frank Langella's performance of Skeletor is, for lack of a better word, inspired.

Haven't seen that one since it was in theaters. Does what I hate most in a movie: has five minutes set in an interesting future/fantasy world, then sends them to present day where it's cheaper to film. Only Terminator actually managed to pull it off well smile It's also sort of a bait and switch, as they had the rights to the toys and not the cartoon and thus were kind of limited in what they could do. No Orco, though, which was a good thing.

Thor is basically everything Masters of the Universe should have been.

Re: Intermission 008 - Best Worst Movies

Anyone listen to the podcast, 'How Did This Get Made?' They talk about bad films (annoyingly, it's mostly brand new or recent ones) and this week they tackled The Room. They also had a special guest in the form of the dude who played Mark in the film. It's quite an interesting listen. link-http://www.earwolf.com/show/how-did-this-get-made/

Good call Jimmy, I was actually going to bring that podcast up. The Room episode and the Punisher Warzone episode with the director and Patton Oswalt are really worth listening to.

Re: Intermission 008 - Best Worst Movies

Mars Attacks is one of those movies that ive seen randomly since it came out, and I cant take my eyes off of it when its on.

Its got a lot of cheesy 90's performances from Burton's cast, bad effects, bad shots, horrible structure.

but its the fun version of War of the Worlds, and the less "AMERICA, FUCK YEAH" version of Independence day.... and ends up feeling like a pulp comic for me, or like the pilot of some show i actually would watch.

Re: Intermission 008 - Best Worst Movies

Mars Attacks is fantastic.

Re: Intermission 008 - Best Worst Movies

I just came across this video and it brings up some pretty good points.

It is absolutely the most sincere bad movies that I get the most enjoyment out of watching. If it wasn't so obvious that Tommy Wiseau was trying to portray a serious drama, then it would be lacking exactly what makes it special.

NANAR!

EDIT: I'm surprised he failed to mention GRINDHOUSE. That was the most high-profile attempt I can think of to make something deliberately nanar and it failed to really take off precisely because everybody knew they were doing it on purpose. I mean, they were fun to watch, especially at the midnight double-feature, and I wish it had taken off and become a perennial thing, but it doesn't take on the same life of its own, "we've all just been through something incredible" experience of witnessing something you know was the product of earnest incompetence. It's not something you want to talk about and share with others.

As someone mentions in the comments, BLACK DYNAMITE comes closer to doing the job, but it's more a spoof of nanar, so while it's funny and something I recommend to people, it doesn't take your breath away in the same way as a ROOM or FATEFUL FINDINGS.

Re: Intermission 008 - Best Worst Movies

When it came out, a critic mentioned that Buckaroo Banzai seemed to be trying to be a cult film, at a time when cult films were those movies which had failed yet later found an audience. I do agree with some of that, as much as I love the film. It is trying too hard.

This is the first I've heard of Fateful Findings. I'll have to keep my eye out for it.

Re: Intermission 008 - Best Worst Movies

I'm wondering where KUNG FURY will fit into this discussion.

If someone can watch a nanar spoof, without the foreknowledge that it's a spoof, and be fooled into thinking it's actual nanar, then I would say that the movie is successful in being so-bad-it's-good on purpose.

[watches Fateful Findings clip]

You know, given the title is at the start, I could almost believe there is no movie, just this short film smile The woman wearing a bra in the shower told me, unfortunately, that this was not going to be The Room level bad porn in addition to being a bad movie.

Re: Intermission 008 - Best Worst Movies

Watching a bad actor who thinks he's a good actor is surreal. It's genuinely disorienting.

Maybe it's the cold medicine, tho.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.
