Re: Cabin in the Woods

I posted this on another board but...

I went to an advanced screening of Cabin in the Woods on April 2nd, host by Shock Till You Drop, and they posted the post show audience reactions (including me, wearing my Nationals shirt and hat).

I had a hard time narrowing down my favorite bit,.. so I just threw that one out... I was also debating the coffee thermos...  big_smile

That film is everything you'd expect from a Joss Whedon and Drew Godard horror/comedy film.

What did you think of it Teague?

Re: Cabin in the Woods

I'm very much not go-to-the-theater-to-see-horror-movies guy - this is the first time I've intentionally done so since The Sixth Sense. I almost didn't go at all, despite really wanting to see the movie based purely on pedigree.

But went I did, with Brian, Dorkman, Trey, Cloe, and Jeff. We had fun.

And I really liked it. Jeff and I have been talking about it all night, he's not as into it as I am, maybe I can coerce him to come in here and share his opinion. I thought it was a blast.

Re: Cabin in the Woods

That and "The Raid" are the two movies out right now that I really want to see. I'll have to wait until next week, tho, cause I already spent too much money this week tongue

******WARNING: THIS POST HAS SPOILERS DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM. SERIOUSLY, I MEAN IT, DON'T DO IT. I GIVE SHIT AWAY. STOP READING! YOU SHOULDN'T EVEN BE IN THIS THREAD. LEAVE, NOW!******

big_smile

That photo above is a bit of a spoiler. Just a bit. I must admit, though, I'm with Archives as I was hoping for 'Sexy Witches' too big_smile

Anyway, I enjoyed the film. I'm not in love with it as much as others seem to be but I did think it was good fun. It was clever and witty, although the game is pretty much given away in the opening credits if you're paying attention. I liked how the kids were unknowingly playing characters, that they were all unwittingly forced into being those roles. That is a clever way of getting round those stereotypes that you find in horror movies. I would like to know what the others were like in real life as Thor seemed to be a nice smart guy 'playing' a jock' and the virgin was apparently a slutty bitch. Does this men that the 'hot' girl (who I didn't think was all that attractive, but that may have been the point) was actually a nice person in real life?

Could someone explain to me how Marty was more aware than everyone else? I know it was something to do with the drugs but I must have missed that part. Is it maybe due to the fact that he wasn't really a dope smoker? smile

Re: Cabin in the Woods

Nah, smoking that much weed was a part of his unadulterated character. There was a throw-away line about how him smoking so much was neutralizing all the other chemicals they were trying to get into his system.

Which echoes those lines from the beginning about chemistry fucking up.

The movie was a lot of fun and well considered.

The Angry Molesting Tree was my favorite part of that first elevator foyer shot.

Right, I get it now, thanks, Paulou. I think I missed that line smile

I had a great time. By the time the INSANE third act rolled around, I was totally sold.

Re: Cabin in the Woods

I knew it was going to be subversive and non-standard when I sat down, but I loved the way they pulled it off.  I loved the humor they injected; I was having so much fun with it, I wasn't even sure there were going to be any killings.

There's a brief exchange which, if you're clever, hints at where they're going.

  Show

Hadley makes some comment about how this used to be so much easier; just throw them into a volcano.
To which Sitterson responds to the effect of "How old do you think I am?"
For some reason that exchange stuck with me afterwards.

I loved the smash cuts to the titles, the direction they went with the ending, the closing song...pretty much everything.  Well, there's just one thing I'm not sure of, but probably falls under magic beans:

  Show

Where exactly did all the various "horrors" come from? Is that Werewolf the only Werewolf that ever existed ever? How does one come by actual zombies? Are there other giant snakes slithering about, or is that the only one?  Either the scientists created them, or they existed back in the volcano tossing days, and are now all caged up.

Either way, I say that's a second magic bean next to giant vengeful gods residing under the Earth which require annual (?) sacrifices to keep at bay.

These niggles aside, I enjoyed myself immensely.  If you're at all in doubt about seeing it, just go.

Re: Cabin in the Woods

Well, as far as second magic beans go...

  Show
I assumed that the monsters (some of them, at least) existed already and were rounded up by the scientists. Amy Acker says at one point something along the lines of, "Not nightmare creatures. Creatures that created nightmares." Also, they talk about the Merman not as something they created, but as something that just exists. "Merman are a pain to clean up after." So these things were common at the time of the Ancient Ones.

"Kevin" makes me laugh every time I see it.

I assume Kevin is most likely an analog of "Jason", but I prefer to imagine that somewhere in the menagerie there's some Lovecraftian horror inexplicably named Kevin.

I was thinking about that too and I like to think Kevin is a dragon. Not sure why, I just like the name "Kevin" for a dragon big_smile

I was initially hoping "Kevin" was the name of the Pinhead-type guy the main girl screams at, because that would be funny but I assume he's the 'Hell Lord' on the board.

Re: Cabin in the Woods

I saw this today, the only one at the noon showing (a huge flock of teen girls were getting tickets for something, though). I liked it, but... it would have been better if people didn't keep saying "don't read spoilers!" It's a straightforward tale where you know what's going on for the most part by the time the eagle shows up. The expected big twist never really came, at least for me.

Re: Cabin in the Woods

Spoilers don't always mean there's a traditional twist. There are details to the execution that are best experienced first hand.

Re: Cabin in the Woods

But that makes it no different then most other movies. Not being told not to be spoiled would have helped me not be looking for something that wasn't there smile

Re: Cabin in the Woods

The whole third act is the reason why people are saying 'don't read spoilers'. I think people expect it to be just a 'cabin in the woods' type film with a killer or a monster. The fact that it goes in a different direction is reason enough to tell people to avoid spoiler, to let them experience that wonderful final third themselves. It takes a 'seen-it-all-before' horror premise, fucks with it and creates a batshit insane film that plays with convention and stereotypes. I think it is a pretty big twist.

You would think I thought the film was excellent when I'd give it a solid 3/5. I did love the last act though, that was awesome. smile

Oh, Spoony...

Re: Cabin in the Woods

The growth of Spoony's fanbase went to his head. The Phantasmagoria 2 Let's Play is amazing, but nowadays he's kind of a pretentious knob.

EDIT: Jesus, the longer that video goes on, the more respect I lose for him. He thinks that namedropping Joseph Campbell somehow makes his opinion superior. Can't stand people like that.

I'm not even going to watch the video. I think Spoony is a bit of a twat. I never watch his videos on TGWTG any more.
