Speaking of the "chosen one" thing, I desperately want one of these movies to start out that way and then have the chosen one get brutally killed 1/3 of the way through, and have the rest of the characters have to deal with the ramifications.

Yes. I was thinking the exact same thing earlier today. Establish the 'chosen one' character, set him on his path and then *boom* he's dead. Now deal with it.

So... the whole Jesus thing.

Is there a movie about Jesus where he gets killed 20 minutes into the film?

Given the discussion about who they cast as the dwarves, this story is appropriate: http://www.tmz.com/2012/06/05/snow-whit … ca-dwarfs/

If you did a movie that covered the Gospels and the book of Acts, he'd die in the first half or sooner. Hmm, I seem to remember a mini-series called AD or something that started with his death, and was longer than most movies about Jesus.

As with most stories, it's all in where you start and stop.

Well yeah but my point is we don't get to see that much.

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

Yes, but I was just giving another example of a story that in fact does that. It's rare, but not new (or without real world examples).

As a teen, I always wanted to do a book written in the first person, then half way through have a chapter start with "Um, hi, this is Steve. Greg, um, died, so I guess this is my story now."

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

Not to digress, but that kinda reminds of this very interesting "found-footage" novel, about a researcher who discovers her AI research project has become sentient. The entire book is told as a series of email exchanges between people involved with the project and the AI itself.

Title or author for that? Sounds interesting.

Exegesis by Astro Teller (yes really).

I think I got it randomly at a yard sale back when I was in high-school or something, was really pleasantly surprised by it.

Actually just picked it up (read it like 10 years ago) and started reading a bit, man this was so clearly written by a Software Engineer, I didn't realize how accurate this is to a lot of actual CS research I've seen.

Edit: figures, written by a guy with a PHD in AI, who heads up Research and Development at Google

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

Maybe this is retcon, but I think of "fairest" as not being the prettiest (hottest, Charlize is clearly that), but the youngest, most virginal (the Queen has gone through a few guys so far right?), innocent. I know they mention "true beauty" or something like that, but couldn't that be more than just physical loks (beauty on the inside?)

This argument wouldn't be necessary had Emma Watson or Emily Browning been cast though smile (good calls btw)

I liked it, Stewart did a decent job. I liked the look of it though, had low expectations.

Fair means pale-skinned, like a porcelain doll which many would consider to be 'beautiful'. So, it would actually make more sense if Emily Browning was cast as she looks like a doll. The reason she has pale skin is why Snow White is given that name in the book. She also has prominent red lips which, again, would make more sense if Browning was cast in a Snow White film smile

I feel like the movie was trying to say that fairest also meant pure and good and right.  The white hart blessing/endorsing Snow White gave me that impression, at least.

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

I haven't seen the film, so I couldn't comment. I was referring to the book and the Snow White story as seen in other films. If it has been changed in SWATH, then fair enough. smile

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

To be fair, the movie itself didn't really know where it wanted to be on this issue, so you can pretty much form an opinion without really seeing it.

I feel like the film could have improved if they did comment on the fact that the only real conflict is between beauty and not, you know, ability to rule a country. They were so close when they had the queen say that she and Snow White were exactly the same, and then they just knocked the idea off the table.

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

Took my kids to Mirror Mirror and the story was a re-imagining, like a dumbed down Princess Bride (wash my mouth out). Very self aware, and used real short people, to great effect actually.

Seems like I made the right choice of Snow White knock offs this year!

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

Sorry, I'm having trouble just getting past the massive typo on the main page, and giggling like a retard saying "Hunstman."

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

I just noticed that myself. It's "Hunstmen" in the title banner and listing, "Hunstman" in the description, and "Huntsmen" in this forum thread. All of them should be "Huntsman", presumably.

EDIT: Michael spells it correctly on his blog. NOT THAT THAT MAKES MICHAEL BETTER THAN TEAGUE.

  Show
The fact that he uses a French phrase I've never encountered before is what makes him better than Teague.

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

The instances where the s comes before the t are typos.

The episode is titled, as if three separate plural items, "on Snow, White, and Huntsmen."

I have a tendency to fix your typos.

My semi-mod powers only allowed me to correct the spelling of this thread title.   The rest I left as an exercise for the reader. smile

Re: #34 - On Snow, White, and Huntsmen

Talking about more appropriate casting choices, when this movie is inevitably remade in a few years, I nominate Chloe Grace Moretz (which would enable the script to go into darker places)

not long to go now...
