Interestingly enough the first draft of Insurrection was a take on Heart of Darkness

But they wanted to retitle it Heart Of Lightness and have a "quirkier, lighter, more fun" story wink

There's a document called Fade In: The writing of Star Trek Insurrection to be found on the Internet (it's an unpublished book written by Michael Piller). Check it out if you haven't seen it already, it's interesting.

Yeah, it's a really interesting read. They didn't want to do a second dark movie after First Contact and Patrick Stewart had some very odd ideas about "Movie Picard" being different from his TV counterpart and insisted on referring to everything as 'Sexy'

We all already know the story even before the trailer. It's a tentpole. Which means the story is... villain wants to fuck shit up, there are early scenes where he fucks shit up to show he's serious, heroes chase villain to the final show-down, there's a punch-up during a count-down, and with seconds to spare, the heroes win the day, roll credits. This accounts for the majority of tentpoles now.

I want someone to make a hybrid trailer of the Avengers, Dark Knight, Skyfall, Iron Man 3, and this one, to show how they all look to have the exact same story-line.

Unless it's the second installment in a planned trilogy, in which case it's basically this but stops halfway through, leaving everything unresolved until the next one.

To be fair, we're talking about the plot more than the story. You can boil down any genre like this. The great movies are the ones that make the familiar journey enjoyable to take.

Not the same but similarly... A guy I know from Twitter took the soundtrack from Transformers 2 trailer and spliced it with the Transformers 3 trailer... Although not one to one it's amusing to see how much the trailers share storytelling beats.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

I agree with Dorkman. You can boil down almost any movie to generic talking points that sounds like everything else.

On topic, I am very excited to see scenes from the movie, and I honestly think that this villain will be a far more personal one for Kirk taking him to the absolute breaking point and threatening all that he loves. I love the family line and how far is Kirk willing to go. That to me is a heartbeat of Trek-the family attitude of the crew, that they care for each other and will take care of each other.

The first Abrams one work well for me because it showed this family coming together, with Kirk and Spock forging a brotherly bond from ashes of tragedy. So, now the next story is testing that familial bond.

I, for one, am very excited!

God loves you!

That's a film studies assignment. You'd need some editing software and in about four weeks you could convert 'TV Tropes' into a Red Letter Media style of popular analysis for Youtube. I'm surprised no one has done it yet. Here's 100 villains and their motivations, here's 100 chase sequences, here's 100 one-on-one finale fist fights, here's 100 climactic explosions, etc. You'd lay the whole cookie-cutter assembly line template bare.
You could even set up a 'Tentpole Plot Generator' website that inserts random words like 'reactor', 'bomb', 'core', 'black hole' into the relevant section.

Re: Star Trek Into Darkness

Someone did this with the James Bond movies, taking five minutes each from the pre-Skyfall films and supercutting them in order (i.e. supercut minutes 1-5 are 1-5 of DR. NO, supercut minute 6-10 is 6-10 of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, etc.) into a single film as a film studies-esque exploration of the "Bond Formula." I haven't watched it yet, but I've seen comments by those who have to the effect that it almost works.

Looks like it, but where's the moderator to whip us into line? C'mon - give it to us.
But meanwhile thanks for the Bond meta-movie - I'll see if it's watchable.

As oppose to "Dark Knight rises?"
I'm trying to understand the objection, but to me the title has a little more depth to it. You can take several different meanings to it, and my own interpretation will only play out as we learn more about the movie.

The only thing that disappointed me about that trailer was that it featured yet another use of the Inception BRMMMMMMMMMMM. It's in like every trailer nowadays. So boring.
