Re: #45 - Unpopular Opinions
I haven't seen Planet Terror. Yet.
It's much more interesting than Death Proof (and there's a DIF commentary for it).
But pity the warrior who slays all his foes...

I didn't much like Planet Terror, too ridiculous and inconsistent for me. Death Proof is a much better movie and I found myself much more engaged and entranced by the story, characters, and tension.
Hey, we can't all suddenly like Death Proof! It's supposed to be an unpopular opinion.
Don't worry - it's still an unpopular opinion. Tarantino himself doesn't have your back on this one.
Weird, I don't think I've ever heard of Chicken Little. (Oh yeah, Zach Braff)
Will check it out.
Unrleated (more unpopular opinions)
I love Kristen Wiig. And that may not seem like an unpopular opinion, but I seem to meet (mostly on the web) people who really dislike her.
I've enjoyed some Dave Matthews Band songs And Dave is super talented (as are all the members, especially the drummer).
I like Kill Bill 2 more than Vol. 1 (but love both)
And hell yeah for all the Death Proof love. I do agree about Zoe Bell though. She's not that great of an actress, but her stuntwork is so good, I can overlook (and it was a Grindhouse film after all).
Also, I love Michelle Rodriguez (even as Ana Lucia).

Oh yeah... I would tap that.
I'm sure he loves Inglorious Basterds though
I agree Death Proof is his worst film.
Still really like it though, mainly because of Russell. That striptease/tease for the striptease scene is worth the price of admission IMO.
As I've said before, I also quite like Death Proof, and certainly like it a hell of a lot more than Planet Terror, which I don't really like much at all. I wish we could cryo-genically freeze Desperado era Rodriguez and have him make a movie every few years, cause the direction he went as a film-maker depresses the hell out of me.
That being said, I agree with Tarantino that Death Proof is his worst film, but that's only because the rest of his filmography is so strong (including Inglourious Basterds, which is so totally in my wheelhouse it's like it was tailor made for me to love it).

He's talking about retiring because Billy Wilder's last 5 films weren't great? Tarantino's only directed 8. At 8 films, Billy Wilder had only done such timeless classics as The Major and the Minor, Double Indemnity, Lost Weekend, Foreign Affair, and Sunset Blvd.
He HADN'T yet done Ace in the Hole, Stalag 17, Sabrina, 7 Year Itch, Spirit of St Louis, Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, and (one of my personal favorites) One, Two, Three.
And those "last five films when they were past it"? Wilder's include The Front Page and Avanti, considered minor classics.
SHUT UP QUENTIN TARANTINO YOU DOUCHE BAG. BILLY WILDER WAS LITERALLY TWICE THE DIRECTOR YOU ARE.
EDIT: Jesus, I just noticed he also mentioned William Wyler, and HIS last five films include Funny Girl, How to Steal a Million, and The Children's Hour.

You should listen to the actual Q/A instead of just taking a snippet at random, even when he's talking about Ford, he mentions that 1 or 2 of the five were decent, and defends Hitchcock's last few. I don't think he was saying all last 5 were bad, just throwing out film-makers that ended on a lower note than they started. It's mostly true that film-makers tend to have a worse track record towards the end of their careers, obviously there's notable exceptions, but I'd say you're running a bigger risk of fucking up the older you get, especially if your filmography up to that point is rock-solid.
I absolutely understand his thinking, and there's nothing wrong with it. Plus, he's not quitting any time soon, he said he's gonna do at least 10, and keep writing books after that.
And apparently Tony Scott didn't want to be Tony Scott.
/aisle seat, please
(including Inglourious Basterds, which is so totally in my wheelhouse it's like it was tailor made for me to love it).
I have dedicated a separate place in my brain to hate IB.
Go figure, whilst I have a few personal problems with IB, I'd consider it among Tarantino's best films (with True Romance, which he only wrote). I've always felt that Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs were a bit overrated.
Inglorious Bastards was hilarious.
I'm not a fan of Harvey Keitel.
When I first saw them, I liked Planet Terror more than Death Proof despite the better reviews Death Proof got. But on revisiting them, I found Death Proof to be more thought-provoking and Planet Terror to just be silly.
I don't get Inglourious Basterds. As I've said before, it would have worked great if the Basterds had stumbled upon a laboratory where the Nazis were altering time and Brad Pitt said, "These Nazzis fucked up the future, boys. We gotta win this war any way we can!" That would have been an awesome holy-shit moment after which ANYTHING could happen.
We gotta win this war any way we can!".
And then they talk Hitler to death
DIF really needs to do an Inglourious Basterds episode at some point, ideally with panelists from both sides of opinion, because I remain baffled by people hating that movie. It's awesome cinematically in terms of scene construction/build and execution, performances are great, it's awesome intellectually in how it humanizes Nazi's far better than traditional "oscar-bait" stuff like Saving Private Ryan and subverts the audience's bloodlust.
I guess people just really wanted a stupid violent kill-them-all action movie, which has been done to fucking death, and would never top Where Eagles Dare anyway.
I thoroughly enjoyed IB. I think the ending was an amazing piece of chaos that worked for me on a very primal level.
In fact, Primal is a word I use to describe for much of QT's filmography. When it works, it works because it forgoes logic in very strategic ways to tap into something very raw. Kill Bill is much the same way. THere's an anger in IB that is palpable, and while the narrative suffers at times, you can lose yourself to the energy of it. If you're an MMA fan, then this analogy will work. QT is the Clay Guida of cinema.

This is a bit similar to why I liked Brave. Teen girl teaches parents she should be free to act strong has been done to death. Teen girl learns Mom is right on most things, and there are different types of strength... not so much.
Man, watching Brave is like a guy showing off his gun collection, but then finding out he doesn't own any ammo. Sure, it's cool and all, but none of it actually does anything despite it's huge potential. And when you express this fact, he takes out some shitty squirt guns for you. You know, the kind made out of cheap clear plastic and the whole inside of the gun is the water reservoir and the cap doesn't stay on tight so it leaks all over your hand and it's small and awkward to hold in your hand and the trigger tends to catch and hurts your finger after a bit and it only shoots 4 feet anyway? Yeah...

And meanwhile the guy's wife is standing there going, "I invited her over to go over some recipes. Put the damned guns away, Hank."
Has anyone listened to the DVD commentary? I'd love to know if they actually go into who was responsible for what.
I'm just finishing season 4, and the hits just keep on comin'.
Just reached "the future". What the hell, JJ Abrams? I don't bring a gourmet dinner over to your house, serve you and, at the end of the evening, invite circus clowns over.
