Topic: Monsters University

Hey, hey guys! The trailer sucks!

This is GREAT!

You might recall that we have a weird little pet theory here at DIF that

A. the best Pixar movies have some of the worst (or least-enlightening) trailers, because

B. the best Pixar movies are the ones that are the most difficult to explain in a trailer-y way.

Pixar often does little character-based one-off teasers that are almost always great, but for the full trailers, trailers that try to give you the full scope of the movie and the story... it generally holds that the less compelling the trailer, the better the film.

Let's take my three favorite Pixar movies.

Toy Story 3?

...um. Eh.

The Incredibles?

Okay, that is a really bad trailer.

Monsters Inc.?

Okay, not a bad trailer, really, but not a particularly good one either.

Now.

Awesome trailer.

Fucking awesome trailer.

...

We're just asking the question.

Re: Monsters University

I maintain that A Bug's Life is ingenious. It's the fable of the industrious ant and the lazy grasshopper crossed with the The Seven Samurai. The acting is good; the animation is great. I don't get why people discount it. I like it a lot more than Finding Nemo or Wall-E, both of which I find to be rather insipid.

EDIT: Holy crap. A Bug's Life used "Baba O'Riley" to introduce it? Weird. "We're going to need to edit around the whole 'teenage wasteland' lyric. Yeah, but that first part about farming is great."

Re: Monsters University

I liked A Bug's Life a lot, myself. I was just going for movies most folks seem to dislike.

And Cars 2 is an outlier, because its trailer sucks too.  hmm

Re: Monsters University

I actually like Cars. But for the story and puns, not the cars themselves. Also, it's one of Pixar's most localised films; all the puns and inside-jokes are very nascar-related, which I suppose doesn't work if you don't know who Larry the Cable guy or nascar is. I don't, so I watch it in Norwegian, in which the dubbing team did an excellent job of translating the references to match Norway.

Also: Incredibly lame trailer. Doesn't make me want to see the movie, but even after Brave, I'd still watch every Pixar film without blinking.

(the teaser for this was heaps better)

Re: Monsters University

Cars is interesting. The story is fighting with itself and can't come to a really satisfying resolution. It kind of half-asses both major themes into an ending and then goes, "TA-DAAA!"

Monsters University seems like a title looking for a story. "Let's make another Monsters, Inc. movie. It has to have a similar title. Monsters Hotel? Monsters Hospital? Monsters.com? USS Monsters? Monsters vs Aliens? No, no, no. Never mind. Monsters University? Yeah, that's good enough."

Edit:

Also...shut your whore mouth, A Bug's Life is awesome!*

*Yeah I know you already covered this, but after watching that trailer I need something I can yell at.

Alright, gotta give it to the marketing guys. The movie may reek like rotten hagfish, but that website is a damn nice piece of work.

Here's the first clip from the movie. Looks pretty funny to me. If they can capture the feeling of what college is like in an honest way, I think the movie will be really successful, and that trailer indicates to me that they will.

Like this one better?

It has less story in it, but I think it's better than the other one.

Re: Monsters University

I was talking about this today and said, "It's basically Animal House with real animals." And then I thought WAIT—THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.

Most of the characters would just be their nicknames: Otter would be an otter. Pinto and Flounder would be a horse and a fish. Stork would be a stork.

Bluto could be a bear. D-Day could be a bull. Neidermeyer could be a lizard. Mandy and Babs could be sexy bunnies. And Dean Wormer would be a worm!

The only way that can be truly captured is if there is no parking:
