A year or so ago, the podcast stopped being just movie commentaries, so I don't think we should put "movie commentaries" in the official name.

The commentaries are one podcast, and the Intermission is a different podcast. Leo Laporte doesn't put all his content in one feed and call it The Leo Laporte Show. He has a dozen different podcasts, all with specific content and names related to that content. Guess what iPad Today is about....

Wrong. It's about BRANDING. They're ALL about branding.

Re: What's Going On: Changes to Come

I may be about to express an unpopular opinion, but I feel it won't hurt to be pointed out.

A name like Friends in your Head sounds too advertising to me. It means more of a "Hey people, come listen to our podcast" to me, which can be great too, but definitely loses the feeling that it's a place, a community, which is something I felt was strong with Down in Front.

I can talk all day about why I love Down in Front as a community, a forum and stuff, but Friends in your Head would just sound wrong. And I feel the same way about many names that have been suggested here.

Now it's still a great name for a podcast. But I like to think Down in Front is way more than a podcast. I guess it's a matter of knowing who the new name is targeted at.

It's weird, really. I've thought a lot about the fact that I may just be used to the old name, but it's not only that. I guess you guys found the perfect name back then. Burn those trademark owners!

EDIT: I think Zarban just helped me prove my point. Down in Front is not the podcast, it's the place. This is very different.

As far as how it gets catalogued on your movie commentary site, sure.  But not anywhere else that I'm aware of.

So branding is exactly why I think "movie commentary" shouldn't be part of the name, since the podcast stopped being just that some time ago.

Re: What's Going On: Changes to Come

I totally disagree that the commentaries and the Intermissions are two separate podcasts. Down in Front used to be a podcast that released movie commentaries. Now it's a movie discussion podcast that occasionally also does full-length commentaries for movies. Same people, same ideas, same podcast. Commentaries aren't the main focus of the show, so the title shouldn't reflect that.

I'm a fan of "Press Play" and "The Back Row". Fridge Logic is clever, but it sounds like you're reviewing snack food and/or appliances.

My official vote is still for "The Intermission" though. It's short, sweet, and established. There's even already a logo for it.

Re: What's Going On: Changes to Come

There is a reason why PepsiCo restaurants are called Taco Bell and Pizza Hut and (formerly) Kentucky Fried Chicken instead of KenTacoHut. It's the same reason Teague called the non-commentaries Intermission and why Trey's mom called his older brothers Ace and Deuce.

When other podcasts sometimes do the occasional commentary, they almost always label them "special episode" or change the numbering. It's convenient to have different names for things that seem different so they can be referred to separately.

I say call the website community Friends In Your Head.com or something but call the two different podcasts two different things. Then you can expand with Eddie's Always Be Fighting Podcast and Brian's Vasquez Rocks Star Trek Podcast and Michael's Dorkman Tells It Like It Is Podcast.

Re: What's Going On: Changes to Come

The commentary episodes have been non-numbered since the format switch. One podcast can have multiple types of episodes. Down in Front only has two - discussion and commentary. No reason to split them up.

They have different feeds. I subscribe to Down in Front - The Intermission on my iPad and to Down in Front (commentaries) on my laptop.

They're already split up. They have different numbering, different names, different content, and different feeds.

Re: What's Going On: Changes to Come

Hey, bonus for the Young Adult reference there.

Anyway, THAT makes sense to me, but the issue of whether to continue multiple podcasts with discrete feeds and brands is a Teague/Holden thing.   I got no problem with a hypothetical "Welcome to Teague's Castle of Chat: {subhead}  Movie Blather!" separate podcast existing someday.   Right now we're just looking to pin down the uber-name, which shouldn't be movie-commentary-specific.

EDIT:  I didn't know whether Intermission and DiF were separate feeds or not - again, that's Teague/Holden witchcraft and I take no part in it.    However, now that we have this opportunity to rebrand, it's also a chance to reverse the hierarchy.      Formerly a movie commentary podcast with a sub-brand that talks about other media-related things, we're looking to be a podcast about media-related things that occasionally does commentaries.

Oh I see what's going on here. Maybe this is the brand example I should have used.

Can't express how bummed I am. That said, I'm all for just going with The Intermission.

A little melodramatic, and inaccurate as it's not a song but a podcast, and it's not over, just retitled—but it fits the mood, and I just can't resist taking every opportunity I can to spread the awesomeness that is The Who. And as I said, bummed, man.

I'm going back and listening to all the Star Wars commentaries now. A way of expressing solidarity, I guess. Best I have, anyway. And hearing Dorkman go full Dorkman over bad movies will be a form of catharsis.

The following is a ridiculous suggestion, which I therefore feel compelled to make: given that you guys sometimes have rows about films, how about "The Row Row". Sounds like Scooby Doo saying "The Now Show" (which is already a thing, but that's not important right now).

Someone suggested We'll Fix It In Post, or maybe some variation (Fixing It In Post, whatever). That's actually quite good (if that name is available) at describing what we do, and also what we DO.  It definitely says "movie-based", and it's a valid title for both the commentaries and pretty much every Intermission we've done, too.

It's too ironic for my liking, at least I hope it's meant to be ironic... it's an atrocious attitude to have when making a movie. I don't know, I guess I wouldn't mind so much if the wording was explicit in acknowledging that it's a crappy thing and you guys were there 'cleaning up the mess', both literally in your jobs and figuratively in the commentary 'booth' discussing about where a film goes wrong and giving suggestions.
