Topic: Full Metal Jacket

Hey guys, Teague here.

Full Metal Jacket is a film that used to inspire two very intense reactions in me – confusion and agitation. Knowing nothing of the armed services, and far less about how anyone could stand to watch this god damned film, the act of me first sitting down and experiencing it was interrupted halfway through by an all-encompassing need to do anything else.

Over the course of this episode, my opinion goes from one of loathing to one of acceptance. Who to thank but our special guest this week, jack-of-oh-so-many-trades Eddie Doty. Trey and Brian are also on deck to weigh in as we examine our first Kubrick film of the show.

Re: Full Metal Jacket

A small note some one mentioned huge building explosions and the x files movie one. I love that effect so i have to correct that. it was a model comped into the real building done by hunter gratzner now know as new deal studios. Great effects sadly pass unnoticed i guess.

Re: Full Metal Jacket

From a documentary I had seen about Kubrick FULL METAL JACKET was an objective look at war. However brutal it appears, there is some beauty to it. His aim was to provide images that were both fascinating and disturbing. That he provided no moral absolutes was intentional. The viewer is there to determine his or her own reaction to what takes place on screen. I don't remember whether or not you mentioned PATHS OF GLORY. I was listening for it and hadn't noticed if you had. PATHS OF GLORY is clearly anti war - pointing out the absurdity of the tactics of WWI. I can see FULL METAL JACKET as a companion piece to PATHS OF GLORY.

Re: Full Metal Jacket

Does this commentary still exist?  I've heard it mentioned on several other tracks but haven't been able to locate it.
