The Challenger Disaster (2013) -  7/10 (7.5)

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02513/feynman_2513082b.jpg

Nice BBC Production of Richard Feynman and his involvement with the aftermath of the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion in the 80s (based on his book). Pretty simple layout, but the simple "one man finding the truth" structure works well and keeps your interest. William Hurt is great as Feynman.

Just a nice little 90 minute movie which dramatizes the events.

Frozen (2013) - 5/10 (7.9)

http://media1.onsugar.com/files/2014/03/14/869/n/24155406/c74d513e7488ef52_Main.jpg.xxxlarge/i/Signs-Your-Child-Loves-Frozen.jpg

I really like Tangled. I did not like this. Character motivations are unclear mostly, things happen because they need to get forward in the plot. Some characters are pointless for the story, and overall just a really dull, bleak landscape and atmosphere throughout. Nothing like Tangled and the more vivid, lush surroundings and atmosphere.

The songs are good on their own for the most part I suppose, but they don't really fit into the movie either. Muddled and uninteresting overall for me.

Memories of Murder (Salinui chueok) (2003) - 8/10 (8.1)

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q80/trungcang/h4/mom_screen_05.png~original

From the director of "The Host". This was a great film, sort of reminiscent of "Zodiac" with it following some police officers tracking a serial killer.
Nothing really truly outstanding about it, it's just well made, well acted, and always has something interesting going on, sometimes bordering on absurdist or darkly humorous.

Nice cinematography. Very recommended, probably will not disappoint at all if you're into the general genre.

Cosmopolis (2012) - 6/10 (5.0)

http://www.yuppee.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Cosmopolis-stills-cosmopolis-31750511-1198-800.jpg

Overall I liked it. Based on a book it seems, and the film does feel like a theater play or such, it being limited to just a few locations, one of which is a limousine the main character uses to get to a hair dressers.

The film very quickly in the beginning slows down to very slow tempo, minimal sounddesign and just two people in a car talking very heavily about subjects, so it took me a while to fall into the pace of the movie. Once I did though about 20-25 minutes in it kept my interest fairly well. Paul Giamatti shows up at the end so if you like him you'll probably be happy, he does a great job.

Again, theatrical and very "overwritten", but I'd say give it 30 minutes and see if you start to sync with it.

Shame (2011)

http://i.imgur.com/ShN01ZN.jpg

Shame shows the life of a man with an addiction to sex, and how it interacts with his social relationships. The dialogue is scarce, everything is said through the situations; overall, the film lets its audience find the answers by themselves.

The cinematography is gorgeous; Steve McQueen's slow, long shots are carefully crafted to express the character's state of mind. Fassbender's performance is outstanding; the actor goes to great lengths to portray his character fully. It's not an easy movie to watch.

Amazing. I'm a big fan of this kind of cinematography capable of expressing so many things with so little; long takes are a personal favorite when directors use them with meaning, and McQueen sure does. It's an incredibly humane film.

I will definitely check out Hunger and 12 Years a Slave.

Some people don't like Wes Anderson's arch style of writing and directing, but I do... at least enough to catch up with his films eventually. Even his love story is bloodless and twee, but that's where it derives its charm, in my opinion. If it were more serious, it would be ridiculous; if it were more comedic, it would be without heart. I love it.

I think it has taken Anderson time to perfect his idiom. I saw his films out of order and like the later ones more by steadily increasing measures, altho I have yet to catch up with Darjeeling Limited or his new one, Grand Budapest Hotel.

Count me in as one of those people, except that Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of my favorite movies. I have a lot of friends who  like Anderson, so I'd grudgingly watched all of his prior films, usually without managing to even crack a smile. I get what's supposed to be funny, but I end up hating the characters, and it ends up being a drag to get through. I only watched Fantastic Mr. Fox because is was stop-motion animation, and I went in with very low expectations. Instead, I found the whole thing delightful. Nothing's really different about it; the humor is all the same, the narrative style, and it's got the same A-list Hollywood cast, but for the first time in a Wes Anderson film, they actually seem like real people, even though, you know, they're animals.

Fantastic Mr Fox was the movie that finally turned me around on Wes Anderson and made me fall in love with his style. It's one of the best animated movies in years

I can't say I've fallen in love with his style, but he certainly made it work to all of its advantages in Fantastic Mr. Fox, and I am tempted to watch Moonrise Kingdom to see if he managed to pull it off again.

You gave Shaun of the Dead and Your Highness the same rating?

Can we just make a rule that you have to at least give a sentence explaining your thoughts? It's kind of ridiculous to just drop posters and scores with no context.

Thirded, since I am interested in the thoughts behind the rating pretty much always. Doesn't need to be long at all, just a summary of what you thought of it (though I always find more detailed thoughts entertaining and interesting).

Her (2013) - 10/10

http://i.imgur.com/TJStm6l.jpg

Holy hell. I don't dole out perfect scores often, but here I have no choice.
A beautifully written script which manages to be very intimate while also effortlessly weaving in themes of existentialism, humanity, technology, and love.
THE most steady directing hand I've seen in years and years. The precision in each scene and the way they flow into each other is incredible.
The acting is superb, everything is just so human, while not falling into complete naturalism.
The score works perfectly in guiding emotion and I never felt like it was forcing something on me that wasn't already present in me from the moment I was watching, the cinematography is exceptional, the editing reaches Malick-ian levels of freeflowing beauty at times.

Throughout this film I just kept wanting it to end just so that it wouldn't take a wrong turn and ruin what was a perfect ride. But it just kept going and going and going, and in the end I couldn't do anything but completely surrender to it.

Fuck yes, this movie.

I recall someone (probably you!) made the same request a while ago. The need here is especially great, since practically everything is rated the same.

Yeah, I was gonna ask about that too. Your Highness has its moments (namely, "Magic, mother****er!"), but other than that, fell flat even with the people who dragged me to it, who actually enjoy the stoner comedy genre.

Re: Last movie you watched

Shaun of the Dead and Your Highness are complete opposites. The latter was entirely improvised, so they just kinda made up the movie as they went along. But the former's brilliance comes from how carefully thought out and meticulously crafted it is.

Her is one of the most amazing pieces of directing I've ever seen. Practically every scene the movie is just begging to fall apart if the tone isn't completely right, yet Jonze completely nails it every fucking time. I couldn't believe how perfectly he pulled it all off. A masterpiece.

Re: Last movie you watched

Just got back from The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Personally, I enjoyed it. I was impressed at where the story went, and what levels they were willing to go. Garfield is fantastic as Parker, combining both the conflicted nature of the character with the wit and sarcasm that made me love the character in the cartoon when i was growing up.

It is a little bit tent-poleish in it's over the top battle sequences and some things are a little rushed. However, as I have been struggling with recent films, the pacing finally feels more manageable. There is a lot of different threads going, which I normally don't like in films, and there is some predictability, given the way things are set up. But, the personal conflict and the building of the Spider-Man mythos felt more natural than the way Rami built the world. There are some interesting details involving Peter puzzling through problems and trying to balance his life. At first, it almost felt like a rehash of Spidey 2, but the personal character development and the emotional and physical fatigue was more palpable.

My one complaint is too many stories. This is far more common problem in movies these days, and despite a decent effort on the part of the balancing all the characters, but it dragged the story down a bit, and left some things either unresolved or too quickly resolved.

However, despite some rushed stories and plot points, I really liked (or felt for) the characters. Even the villains have a point in terms of what they are doing and wanting to accomplish.  This continues my new, not favorite reaction in movies, caring for the villain and feeling bad for them.

Special comment goes to Dane DeHaan, who plays Harry Osborn as this brilliant and psychotic person. He had good chemistry with Garfield, and really enjoyed his performance.

Overall, a decent action flick, with some fun character moments. I think it felt more like Spider-Man to me, like a kid trying to be a hero and yet struggling with all of these problems. I really felt for Peter and was more attached to him as a character.

Another unnecessary remake made by no other than Marcus Nispel - the foremost director of controversial remakes. Conan The Barbarian 3D is an unimaginative interpretation of the Hero's Journey. Bland and not fun to watch.

Rachel Nichols used a body double for the sex scene, which suggests that she was hired solely for her acting skills. WTF? Did nobody realize that Rachel is no Jodie Foster? We live in truly dark times...

Rachel Nichols is actually a solid actress but this role just wasn't right for her and Nispel can't direct actors for shit. The whole body double thing confuses me, what is the point? If they knew their lead actress has a no-nudity clause, then why even bother filming the scene the way they did? Did they think we really just had to see the character's breasts, no matter what? Pointless.
