More or less my reaction:
The thing that puzzles me about that comic is the ship at right doesn't resemble any Star Wars vehicle that I can think of, but does look very much like an Eagle from Space 1999.
Speaking as a former kid who owned Eagles and Star Wars models simultaneously, I find this completely plausible. 
I have no idea who created this, but someone needs to get this image in front of JJ Abrams -- stat.
Gotta love the internet. They have 20 frames of a new thing, and they already don't trust JJ enough to explain it to us or make it work.
I read a thing the other day where someone went down the line and listed every known material in the EU (As it stood before Disney) that was impervious to lightsabers. List was like 20-30 materials long. And clearly it's not any of those that they are incorporating into canon, or hell, any of the other hundred legitimate sounding reasons fans have come up with in the last few days to explain why it would work.
No, clearly JJ is wrong about his own movie and based on the 20 frames we have of this new thing we know better.

People have already deciphered the Aurabesh in the trailer. Apparently it says "RFN RRUP". The movie will definitely suck because of this 
There are those who claim it reads "Pull to inflate" but it's hard to decipher because it's upside down (for the pilot's benefit).
If that's true, then I applaud the level of detail of the world-building.

Colbert put forth a reasonable theory on his show last night. He says that the side guards aren't separate beams, but refracted from the main one. The metal protrusions are there to protect the user's hand, and slicing through them would still hit the saber.

It's the Rebel Transport toy - you could remove the front to expose the cockpit. Needless to say, it was not to scale!

I just thought it looked cooler than what we saw in the trailer.

I saw it, and am fine with the explanation. This rework of the saber doesn't do anything at all to invalidate that explanation, either. All it does is removes the top-half of the tubing, resulting in (IMHO) a much cooler looking lightsaber.

I'm excited, but I'm going to try to keep that excitement to a manageable level next year. More than any other movie, this is the film I could overhype in my head to the point of completely ruining it.

Also, I love the new saber design, personally. It gives it a little more of an aged and heavy feel (if that makes sense) in a way that I think Lucas was thinking of originally. It could be venting, or it could be an actual hand guard to, you know, protect the hand from the blade. That would be a good thing 
I can't believe I'm actually getting into this, but:
The "exhausts" can't really be guards, as they have smaller emitters, that a potential blade could cut right through. If they were flush with the hilt, then I guess it could work.

I'll point you to one of the 16 dozen various possible explanations the internet (and abroad) has come up with in the past week, of why that's not the case.

I think the key to enjoying the new Star Wars movie is managing expectations via remembering that it's very likely going to be a "typical JJ Abrams film".
Assume it'll be a super-fun popcorn movie, probably with fridge logic issues, and not much else. It'd be shocking if it didn't at least meet that expectation, and if he does step up his game you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'd like to point out that crossguard lightsabers aren't new:
Given the lightsaber origin as like a broadsword, the cross guard does not strike me as odd. I agree with Tom that it doesn't look entirely practical, and a quick Google search will likely reveal some fan designs more akin to what I'm thinking. But, I think that the guard is an interesting idea, one that could be employed to a minimal degree in combat.
Also, could be the "Rule of Cool" being applied too
Given all the other influences in the original movie, I'd say the Jedi are Samurai and the light swords are more like katana's. "A more elegant weapon."
I think this is a really cool way of doing so.
