Re: Release, Record: 11/9
theatrical is better, as with many movies the extended is fine for people who already love the movie and want more of it, but a little slow if it's your first viewing.

Yeah hey so...I'm just gonna say it.
Not really a fan of you guys doing a movie I have zero ability to see, mostly due to a lack of ability to buy it on itunes and secondly because I highly highly doubt a theater near me is going to be playing it. You guys know I'm a fan of you guys doing newer releases, but you know, you gotta draw the line somewhere.
Just fyi.
While I agree with Maul2, I also think 'fuck it, why not?' We don't have to listen to every commentary they do, maybe the Monsters one can be left for later for those of us who can't watch it at the moment? The film is released in the UK in November and even then, I'm not in a huge rush, so I'll save this particular one until I get round to it.
Are you guys unable to get it from iTunes for geographical reasons, or financial reasons? Can't help with the former, but I can help with the latter. Drop me an email. It's not a charity thing or any bullshit like that.
I'm not really bothered to be honest. I don't think I can download it in the UK, though I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, I'm not complaining, I'm more than happy to wait
(and I'm sure I can get it less than legally through a torrent downloading thingymabob if I really have to)

With many horror movies, especially from the 70's and 80's, the theatrical cut has is usually a butchered version to get a R rating so directors cuts are preferred. In the case of Dawn of the Dead, though, the "directors" cut according to wiki is a ruff cut done quickly for a festival and the theatrical version is the preferred "uncut" X rated version.
Weren't you guys doing "The Shining" instead of "Dawn of the Dead"?
We were, until we realized we don't have much to say about it.

It's more of a "I don't have any method with which to get the money to Itunes". Also, that $10 constitutes about a sixth of all the money I have in nthe universe.

I suppose that's possible, all's I know is that i got hold of a bootleg VHS many years ago that was definitely a longer version of the movie. It may have been a non-US release version, but I really have no idea.
Again, it was kinda cool since I liked the movie anyway, but I wouldn't have shown it to anyone as their first viewing, the released version moved faster and was generally better , IMO. Usually "missing" scenes were cut out of movies for good reason, I enjoy them for their educational/bonus value, but the number of times I've thought "wow, they really should have left that in" have been extremely rare.
It's like Apocalypse Now Redux, don't watch that version first (if ever).

I sentiment I still disagree with, for the record.
You have some amount to say about it, but the important word there is "we."

The box set I have also has a European cut, but I'm not sure how that differs from the first two.

Very true, but again things are different for a genre where censorship is a major problem.

Well... you know, in the past the idea of "bonus" episodes came up (in the context of doing say a regular commentary of Serenity and an extra one with some of the FX guys). If Brian wanted to talk about The Shining, is there a reason he couldn't pull together three others and go for it? Or would such a thing open up a pandoras box and fracture what little glue is holding you guys together as it is?

Better yet, Brian could just do the entire episode himself.
He could call it Finifter In Front.
Down In Finifter?
Down In Finiftront?

Invid: We may get to Shining eventually, but there's a lot of other movies we can all talk about. The last time two people had basically nothing to say on a commentary was The Thing, and I'm not super happy with that episode for that reason. *shrug*

Have a lot to say about Dawn of the Dead, do you?
Wasn't implying I had all the say, just noting my point of view for the record.

That's a fair point, but we haven't even touched the zombie genre. We've got zombie-related opinions and theorizing to go into in addition to the film itself. Could be that the Dawn of the Dead commentary is to the zombie genre what the Crouching Tiger commentary was to the martial arts movies genre.
Meanwhile, we're pretty squared up on Kubrick theory. We might end up with two hours and twenty-six minutes of play-by-play talkery for that flick.
I'm playing it safe and hangin' with the zombies.
Good thing I have the Ultimate Edition, its got the theatrical, extended and european cut.
and maybe this time I won't miss it.
Teague seems to be a bit harder on himself than he should be. The Fifth Element was mentioned during the Nerds in Babeland interview but i liked that one fine. Feel free to do more fan requested movies! On The Thing Trey and Dorkman picked up the slack, again a fine episode for one of my favorite movies of all time.
Also, today's my birthday. 10/10/10. Eerie.

Up Out Back.
'Up Out Back' should be a fan podcast where people do commentaries for DiF commentaries.
