The replicants aren't great, they're slaves. Creating them was evil. It's the result of a total lack of empathy.

Replicants are stronger, faster, and tougher than humans. Their engineered short lifespan is the only thing that isn't equal or better. They have emotions and sentience, so it's evil to enslave them, but it's not inherently evil to create them. Humans create creatures that are very similar to themselves every day.

The whole unicorn thing in Blade Runner is a suggestion that Deckard is also a replicant, which if you watch the other movies based on Philip K. Dick stories,  questioning reality is a common theme.

Right, but it doesn't work with the major theme Scott develops. "Humanity confronted by its creation" falls apart if the protagonist isn't human. A lot of Dick's questioning-reality stuff works in stories because we can be inside the character's head, knowing his thoughts, experiencing his reality with him. But that's impossible in a movie. The audience is always outside the characters looking in--VO narration notwithstanding.

EDIT:
It suddenly occurs to me that you may have been joking by choosing train wreck adaptations of Dick's work. I would add Minority Report (is Anderton locked up and dreaming the third act?) and say that even tho it and Total Recall are fun, the questioning-reality parts tend to derail all the Dick adaptatations.

Given that even a pleasure model can kick his arse, I'm not sure he makes for a very effective replicant hunter.

Exactly. Is Deckard a slow, weak human who must use experience and shoe leather to defeat the artificial supermen? Or is he the dupe tricked into hunting his own? That could be an effective story, but it has a different third act (revenge). The two themes can't coexist peacefully.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Maybe Teague should let us DIFtards™ come by and record the show for Tron and Blade Runner since we have so much to say about it.

TRON is great just because of David Warner, who I can watch in just about anything. Hell, he makes Wing Commander worth watching. End of line.

Scary thought, we're only 9 years away from the Blade Runner version of the future.

Have you ever seen Straw Dogs? That's messed up movie.

I guess we're right on track global warming wise.

Re: Suggest a movie!

Maybe you should do Apocalypse Now. I mean, Martin Sheen went to all this trouble.

Re: Suggest a movie!

I would like to hear you guys do a Stephen King movie.  Green Mile, Pet Cemetary, or even Maximum Overdrive, a classic 80's thriller.  If not, how about Resevoir Dogs, or No Country for Old Men.

Thanks for the great podcast and keep them coming!

Re: Suggest a movie!

Thanks! Welcome to the forum.

We'll probably do the shit out of Green Mile at some point, for sure. Reservoir Dogs is a solid maybe, we'll definitely get to Tarantino. Pet Sematary isn't unlikely, because Trey worked on the sequel.

Re: Suggest a movie!

You've GOT to do Zodiac. I know that you love it, Teague. Don't you deny it.

Then again, that's a long movie, and you might not have an entire commentary's worth of stuff to say. What about Minority Report? That one tends to bring out pretty strong emotions in everyone who sees it.

You guys should do 9 by Shane Acker. Very promising... and disappointing movie. But it can be interpreted in a lot of ways.

Whenever I'm really, really mad, I pop that movie in. It reminds me that there are things worse than whatever is bothering me.

But seriously, you guys should really get around to doing Serenity. You could even do separate commentaries for your favorite episodes of the show, as bonus episodes or something.

New forum rule. Whenever anybody asks for a "Serenity" podcast, that person has to put a buck in the tip jar.

Re: Suggest a movie!

It's real.  It was made in 1976 and starred Kristine DeBell who was actually super cute, in my opinion. It was one of those 'real actress has body double' deals, though as DeBell only gave head, the penetration shots were of someone else. Quite odd, back in those days that bj's weren't considered hardcore, apparently.

Oh, and yes, it was also a musical- Clicky

Pro tip: The google image search results for "Kristine DeBell" are best viewed in the privacy of one's own bunk.

Also she looks so much like Samantha Morton it's freakin' me out.

Re: Suggest a movie!

They filmed the "hard core" version after the original X rated release, so yes it probably wasn't her if you can't see her head. It's damned fun, especially as I'm one who before that had only seen her as the sweet girl in Meatballs.

A DVD was released a couple years ago which included all the different versions, although the soundtrack CD was dropped for some reason.
