Support the guy, we want the world to go "oh, you want to make a low budget VFX movie? I've seen that work before, here's a moderate sum of money!"

The closest theater playing this is 900 miles away. It is rather unlikely that I will go see this movie.

That's a good example of when filmmakers say "vote for the type of movie you like with your ticket-buying dollar", the answer is: it's not that easy. I don't want cinemas to disappear like drive-ins or like music on physical media, but it's so easy now. If i was a theatre owner i'd sell it and get into the ISP business, everyone's going to just stream movies.

Maybe this movie (which i haven't seen yet) should've been marketed as "it only cost $15,000". It's like i want to go see movies made in my country but which ones (if any) are they? They never say in the trailers or ads.

Hmmm....  looks like I'm in the same boat.  Austin TX is a bit of a hike right now.  Might just rent it again; hope that's counting toward box office sales.

And yet $8 is way too much if no one has bothered to make me care about seeing it. I mean, I get 'help the indie filmmaking' as an argument, but, as far as me being a filmGOER, and not a filmMAKER, I'm more likely to want to see a movie that costs $300 million than one that cost $15K, so why would I spend my $8 on one of those instead of one of those?

I'm in exactly the same boat...with the addition of the fact that I don't have 8 bucks to spare right now.

Re: Monsters

Why should you see it? Because it has a lot of interesting ideas, likable (if underdeveloped) characters, and some cool monsters at the end. You won't get anything more or anything less from your average $300 million movie. And on top of it all, you're supporting indie filmmaking.

I agree, but I think the point he's trying to make is that no one outside of a niche groups are telling him that. In other words there has been almost zero marketing to the general population for Monsters, which basically makes it impossible for it to succeed on a wide scale, meaning that no matter what we in our niche groups do it won't really make a difference.

Re: Monsters

I think my point is that I have no idea what the movie is. Zombieland is about a guy fighting zombies. Star Wars is about a guy fighting an evil empire in space. Silence of the Lambs is about Anthony Hopkins being creepy to Jodie Foster.

Monsters is about...what. What is it? Tell me what it is.

You can't convince someone to watch a movie just because it's an indie movie. That is not a credential, that's a handicap.

A Google search turned up this:

http://www.nj.com/entertainment/movies/ … or_it.html

But ultimately there is nothing here that “District 9” didn’t do better, or smarter.
All “Monsters” has going for it is that it did it cheaper.

Nope, not interested.

We get it. You're an independent thinker who can't be cajoled into watching any damn movie the world makes. Standards, etc. Let's stay on the topic of discussing the film, and not very admirable reasons not to see it.

Re: Monsters

From the "inside look" piece I saw, Monsters did look a lot like District 9 but with some elements of Mist. That's cool, because I enjoyed both of those movies up to a point. I was hoping this one got it all right. My fear is that it's ultimately more like Cloverfield: whiny 20-somethings trying to avoid monsters for 2 hours to absolutely no end.

It was supposed to be on TV one time before going to theaters. I was very interested, but then I couldn't find it to record it. I'm out of the habit of seeing almost anything in the theater, so maybe I'll download it even tho watching a movie on a computer as a first time viewing is lame.

Warning: I'm probably rewriting this post as you read it.

No one in this thread can even tell me what the premise of the movie is? Is that really too much to ask?

Re: Monsters

Wikipedia:

Alien life forms have spread throughout the U.S.-Mexico border region leading to the quarantine of half of Mexico. The U.S. and Mexican militaries are battling to contain the creatures, with a wall stretching along the American border. The story follows Andrew, an American photojournalist helping his wealthy employer's daughter, Samantha, get back to America.

IMDb:

Six years after Earth has suffered an alien invasion a cynical journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through an infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

OK, see? Yes, that's helpful. That's what I was asking Teague for in the first place. I'll check it out, although to be honest it does just sound like a District 9 clone.

You see the funny thing about the internet is that anybody can get access to those sites at any time they want...not just Teague.

Funny old world eh?

Re: Monsters

Although there's something to be said for asking people who's point of view you know to interpret what's on those sites and not want to just read the ad copy. Answering "What is it?" with "Good" is just as unhelpful as someone who refuses to go dig up the information themselves.

You know, I hope the lack of talk about the actual commentary isn't an indicator of how many are actually buying the movie. I don't think I will be able to watch it until I can get a disk rental personally.
