I watched half a trailer. There's definitely a Birdemic vibe as far as acting goes.

Interesting things are happening in Riff Land.

First, old MST3K episodes are being sold by Rifftrax on their web site. This means the cast will be making money from them for the first time since they aired. A new old episode will be released each Monday.

Now, a mere three weeks later, Joel has started a Kickstarter to do a new season of MST3K:

All new cast, and no word on who will do the writing.

It looks like it will make its first goal, at the very least. I won't be contributing, as my money goes to the Rifftrax live kickstarters, but I'm interested in what they're going to do.

Over in TV groups they're commenting it's independent of the movies. Not sure how they're going to do it.

Someone brought up the fact that two producers had a sort of first right of refusal on any TV Trek, and they canceled Enterprise and kept Trek off the air until Paramount could fire them. Apparently they're gone now.

You know, that movie stuck so little in my mind I didn't even know it was a musical. Twas the era of Star Wars and such.

I watched it in theaters when it came out. I recall my eight year old self enjoying it, but not much else.

Although studios love to buy ads that say that, it's important to remember that sort of honor is only slightly more notable than those "World's Greatest Grampa" statues.  The recipient likes showing them to everybody, but they don't really mean anything.

You take that back. Grandpa was AWESOME!

It's OK, tho. The film keeps showcasing all of these great old kung-fu flicks, and then at the end there's a five minute sequence where they dedicate the film to half the fucking HK film industry one at a time. Like this is supposed to have been some kind of legendary martial arts flick meant to honor the history of Kung Fu Cinema or something. I don't get it. Just make period flicks, you stupid fucks! Jackie Chan got away with that contemporary shit because he was making action comedies and he could do a lot of awesome shit with cars and modern architecture and ladders and malls and playground equipment. If you're not going to do that kind of awesome shit, or if you're going to pretend like there are still weird rural areas where old-timey martial-arts schools still exist, then just make it a god damned period flick. If you want those scenes, set it in those times. Otherwise don't do that.

It may be an issue of existing standing sets not, well, existing. Just like many old SF/Fantasy movies took place in modern day because it was cheaper than creating a new world, so just renting a warehouse is going to be cheaper than rebuilding some Chinese town. What sets do exist may be priced out of the reach of low end productions.

The trailer seems to show a good movie. That's good. However, for whatever reason, it didn't feel like a Star Wars movie. Can't explain it. The movie will probably redefine what Star Wars, as a genre, means for a new generation, which is fine. The trailer is just missing... well, the fun.

The Bad Astronomer doesn't really have a problem with the idea.

Fun fact: I saw it at church during a youth group lock-in.

Is this going to make it onto youtube? I started watching the live stream, but when Teague said the youtube version wouldn't be as choppy I decided to wait for that.

If you haven't seen the current live tour of the Wall, you must do so. The DVD comes out in December, but for the longest time you could get the full concert on youtube. Waters has clarified the message to be anti-war, perhaps a bit too much, but it's still great. Saw it both times it came to Buffalo.

As for the movie, my problem is mostly it's all at one level. There are no highs or lows, it's all high points. It needs some variation, so you can rest. At the very least, it needs the act break both the album had (when you change disks) and the stage show.

For the fun of it, check out the old Sneak Previews review of it.

Knowing the internet, SOMEONE will eventually step up to fill this need. There's a geek somewhere who's saying, "I'd set up a site about commentaries, but this Zarban guy has already.... hey!"

With adaptations, it's all about what is kept and what is cut. A different script writer would have ignored certain things as silly unneeded detail. Loved the Leather Goddess of Phobos reference.

A lot of the fun comes from the script. On seeing Drew Goddard in the credits, my reaction was "Ah, that's why."

Saw The Martian today. Fun movie. I enjoyed it more than Gravity, but I boil that down to the main character knowing what they were doing and not "accidentally" surviving much of the time. It does seem to be a Mary Sue, the creator going "well, if *I* was stuck on Mars, I't do THIS!", but it overcomes it. I'm amused by XKCD comparing it to 50 Shades of Grey. I especially liked the little touches, like what games were on the laptop. I hope this leads to a Leather Goddess of Phobos movie.

As always, if you don't like Doctor Who, come back in three years. Everyone in front and behind the camera will be different.

If he goes against his previous moral conclusion, it would be interesting. In Genesis of the Daleks, which we see clips from, the Doctor concludes the Daleks actually made the universe unite against them, and that was a positive. Thus he didn't destroy them when he had a chance.

I don't get BBC America and didn't feel like buying the last season, so haven't watched any of the new Doctor until now (the BBC put this episode on YouTube). I was a bit underwhelmed. Lots of interesting ideas, but they seemed rushed and/or wasted. The bit with the sonic screwdriver was weird, and shows they're not really thinking ahead when writing episodes. If he had lost it last season between episodes, and just now we found out what happened, that would have been more interesting (assuming he didn't lose it last season  smile ). I was also very disappointed when the Master didn't make a snide remark when the screwdriver showed up. After all, the Doctor was without a screwdriver from his 5th through 7th regenerations (the writers taking it away as it made life too easy). The Master saying something like "You lost it AGAIN?" would have improved things.

As is often the case, it depends on when you start and stop your data collection. Go back one more year and you Have Spiderman 2 winning. The previous three years had the Lord of the Rings films, with ':' in the titles, winning. At that point your theory takes hold again, as Terminator 2: Judgement Day was way back a decade earlier.

And thus proved the existence of God.

I doubt they used a matte. A black bag over his head would be the easiest way to do it, with maybe some hand painting around the edge.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fc/MadokaBD.jpg

My going into 7th grade niece was crying her eyes out during this.

Originally a twelve episode TV series, it's now two movies available on Netflix streaming, along with a third film set afterwards. The concept is simple: it's a Magic Girl show. Young girls are told that in exchange for a wish being fulfilled, they will become Magic Girls, powerful creatures who save humanity from Witches. It's a win-win situation! Who would say no?

I'm not familiar enough with the genre to know if there have been deconstructions like this before. I can't believe there haven't been. Regardless, this show is incredible. The world is well thought out, the writing top notch. The animation... well, how they managed this on a TV budget I'll never know. The style during the Witch battles becomes this Victorian/ Terry Gilliam affair that just grabs the eye. The dubbing, too, is rather good.

I don't want to spoil the plot. Let's just say every choice has a consequence, every life saved must be balanced with a death. And, most importantly, never trust cat bunnies granting wishes. Even if you hate anime, give the first movie a try.
