I'd consider the movie to already have a downer ending. Our access to space has been irreparably cut off and the destruction of a fair few satellites has cut off television, GPS and telecommunication services all over the world.

Increasingly, most of our telecommunications and entertainment data comes via the internet and cable TV, and not satellite. I once went to a talk by Frank Drake (head of SETI) who claimed that the Earth is getting 'dimmer' from the perspective of aliens listening to us. Famously, in Contact, aliens picked up Hitler opening the Berlin Olympics in the 1930s, and it's often joked that aliens must be sick of I Love Lucy in the 1950s and 60s.
But as the 21st century proceeds, most of humanity's chatter will be digital narrowcasting, rather than analogue broadcasting, so there's less leakage into space.

You're right - loss of GPS would suck. But if we can't launch anything anymore because of all the crap up there, we could replace space-based GPS with a ground based system (e.g. mobile phone antennae).
And yeah, having all that debris up there will make it impossible to launch anything e.g. probes to Mars. We'll need a giant orbiting Roomba to hoover it all up.

A Roomba that manages stairs... oooh and does dishes too. When will the future happen?!

She gets back to NASA and she's like, "Where's my daughter?"

And they awkwardly explain, "She went looking for you...IN SPACE."

Next summer...GRAVITY 2

SEE!? There was a way to keep hollywood appeased and me!

What about this... Sandra Bullock thought her daughter was dead (e.g. went missing or something). Then she finds out on the ISS that her daughter is actually  alive, which gives her the motivation to get back in the saddle.

And then Sandra Bullocks crash-lands her capsule...... on............... her daughter. Roll credits. Boom!  lol

Well, heck.. that's the best of both worlds. I like your thinking sir!

You could have done a similar idea to what you were saying but instead of having her drown, end the film after here re-entry speech and just show the outside of the capsule entering the atmosphere.  Leave it up to the viewer to decide whether or not she burned up on re-entry or not.  You'd still have the rebirth tone with her overcoming adversity and smiling while giving her monologue.  At that point she'd done everything possible and her survival was completely out of her hands.

Of course, I still don't think they should have gone that way, because then we wouldn't get the soaked Sandra in her Underwear.

You've Nailed it! Erm.. wait.. Bullock on a beach... I think we best leave it as is.

My ending was... and then APES ON HORSEBACK!

My ending was... Bullock crawls out of the lake, goes into a convulsion, and... CHESTBURSTER!

Now that you say that, Sandra Bullock as a modern day Riply; grey T-shirt and skimpy underwear to boot!

I'll concede. But my thoughts stand.

The movie trade needs to grow a scrotum. Every film does not have to have a happy resolve. Let me leave the cinema with questions. Let me slurp down the last dribbles of my over-sized drink and come away with a great experience. A bag full of emotions. Granted, Gravity headed that way through out the movie.

So... erm... SHARKS!!!!

@Snail was right! Sharks!

For me...

#1 The Crow
#2 Gravity
#3 Europa Report (provisos included)
#4 Van Helsing (just bought the DVD - wow, WOW - A definite switch your brain off movie)
#5 I don't have a fifth... well one I could place in a TOP 5 list were I could look at myself in the morning

I see what they did. I, personally would have LOVED IT the other way. Either way, still a solid movie. A movie I'll happily see again.

One thing that did take me out of the movie quite a bit - when she went under the water in the landing Module, they dipped the score. Almost as if she was the only person to hear it. I like the stylistic touch... but it snapped me into movie grammar mode. So, in between breathes of 'will she drown or won't she' I was thinking 'what are they doing with the score'.

I thought Trey would be on my side... I totally get her getting over her grief and having a new found vigor for life... I just think the 'Hollywood - Triumph - Over - Adversity' ending was the wrong choice. And, yeah. It most probably wouldn't make a dime at the box office that way. Jus' spit balling.

Gravity... great film! I was hoping Bullock died drowning at the end (I'm aware those are words I have nor will ever get the opportunity to say again - har). It would have made for a more compelling ending. After all that adversity, she made it back to earth, and died, merely feet from dry land!

Your thoughts......

Hi. I'm Kris, 29 years old of age. From The north east of England. I'm a Pisces. I have Hazel eyes and into... MOVIES. I am a guitarist at heart and have been for 20 years, yet have still to master it. I'm fascinated with how the movie industry works. It all spawned from my love of animation and MAYA. I've made a few darrffft animations over my time... for silly songs I posted on youtube spanning about 10 years (mainly to do all the work myself out of necessity) and for friends to larrff at. I stumbled across this site as I was searching for a 'back to the future' commentary and Zarban's site led me here so have been a fan since nearly inception... I guess?! As much as it was for technical insight of the industry I was looking for, I've learned a lot about actually story telling - plus a hoot to boot when drinks are involved #DorkmanStarWarsPrequals. I'm rather recent to the actual forum 'cos I never seem to catch the live recordings. Poltergeist broke me in first and sooo looking forward to the 24 hour Potter-athon!

Not so much a question... but a "Wait a darn minute, did I just see the MGM production card on the new Robocop??" Seriously!
