I'm rather fond of Love and Monsters despite everyone else declaring it to be wank =/

I also like Love and Monsters (and I believe is has the peculiar honour of having the most costume changes of any episode). If the complaint against it is that the Doctor isn't in it much, then I guess Blink and Turn Left must also be terrible.

Heh, Saturday afternoons, eh? As a child, I saw lots of old Universal horror movies, 50s B-movies and the like in a late-night timeslot called Don't Watch Alone on Scottish Television. I distinctly remember being freaked out by the, let's call it a, monster in The Giant Claw because it was so ridiculously unreal that it sort-of wrapped around the reality spectrum and became superreal. Or maybe I was just tired.

Oh, and the new series of Who Do You Think You Are? will feature both Alex Kingston (River Song) and Patrick Stewart in the next few weeks.

Since we get the US version here in the UK, I outrageously presume that the UK version might air in the US at some point.

Adventures with the Wife in Space is a terrific blog, in which the wife of a Who fan watches, and comments on, every episode from 'An Unearthly Child' onwards.

They're currently approaching the end of the Tom Baker era, which means they're already well over 500 episodes in.

Of course, if you're ever planning to watch the earlier episodes yourself...spoilers!

Has anyone pimped Pink Five on the Twitters at high-profile Star Wars fans like, say, @simonpegg, @nickjfrost or @wilw? I don't see evidence of it, but twitter's search engine isn't the best.

Note that, between them, they have 20 times the followers of the official @starwars account, and they do actually interact with fans on Twitter all the time, so if we can catch their attention and their fancy, I'm sure there's a decent chance they'd retweet it to their (literally) millions of followers.

There are surely many others like them (are any of @badastronomer, @jerilryan, @neilgaiman or @neiltyson Star Wars fans?) that it's worth Trey (or even everyone) pinging them and asking for a RT.

(@jimcameron has more followers than @starwars too, but he doesn't seem to be doing much with the tweeting and the stuff lately.)

Even though I'm not the publicly pimping kind, I'm happy to try a couple and see what sticks.

New series starts September 1st on BBC One.  I believe will air in the US a week later.

However, another series called 'Pond Life' starts at midday on Monday 27th, and runs all week.

Maybe at least this version of the show will always have seven people in the rebel team, and one of them will always be called 'Blake'.

Speaking of "father/daughter", the "Doctor's Daughter" had such potential. The episode was pretty dumb, but the girl was super cute and seemed like a great potential companion. And it would make sense for the Doctor to want to keep her close (insert snark here).

Well, David Tennant certainly thought so; he married her. For additional fan squee, the actress who played the Doctor's daughter, Georgia Moffett, is the actual daughter of Peter Davison, who played Doctor number 5.

Cue the follow-up episode, "Timey-wimey, Father-in-lawbbly".

The BBC have popped up 24 extra TV channels for the duration of the Olympics, so they are literally showing *all* the Olympics live, simultaneously.  If I were into sport, I'd probably find it amazing, although I would despair at all the extra PVRs I'd have to get to record everything. The production galleries must be pretty fearsome.

However, they're not all on Freeview (there isn't enough over-the-air bandwidth for 24 extra TV channels, so Freeview is only a couple of extra red button channels in the 30x range), but they are all on satellite, Freesat, cable and online.

I'm impressed with how many options the BBC have made available: I think everything is live in HD, much of it is in 3D, and some of it is in Super Hi-Vision (7,680 x 4,320 picture, 22.2 sound). It makes NBC's delayed, edited version look utterly pathetic by comparison.

The US get an Olympic TV spot for Bond? How dare they?

#fauxoutrage

Well, one might consider the Olympic opening ceremony to be a TV spot for Bond.

And, of course Jimmy will know this, but we're not going to get any other Olympic TV spots in the UK, due to the Olympics only being shown on a couple of dozen BBC channels.

(Not joking about the "couple of dozen", by the way.)

I don't agree. She never smiles anyway in these situations, so if she had, she would have been out of character as herself.

If you watch the set-up to her reveal, it's shot specifically to make you wonder who they've got to play the queen, because (as far as I know) she has never done anything like this before. That she went along with the whole thing (including preserving continuity of costume -- the scenes at the palace were shot in March, and they had to make all the trees look summery in post) is good enough for me.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when the production company pitched this idea to the participants.

Never mind the cats, here are some highly-specific comic things:

Just watched it on DVD with my wife; she ended up sitting through most of it playing DrawSomething, and declared it to be a "boy's film" at the end (which is kind-of code for: "all action and no sense").

I thought it was okay; I laughed a couple of times, and thought there was at least some effort put into the story, but overall I think they could have done better with the characters and the surprises, and the general tone was an insipid mix of limp political satire and so-so space malarkey.

I think there were two extremes they should have considered dialling the movie up to: either full Independence Day or full Strangelove, but I wonder if they were held back from such boldness by having to appeal to  enough funders to fill several large Starbucks, numerous Scandinavian arts committees, and the members of an internet forum.

I've only seen Star Wars: Episode III on fast-forward; I believe it was no less comprehensible, and no less boring, while being mercifully shorter than if I'd been suckered into seeing it in the cinema, as I was with episodes I and II.

As for six unseen things of filmic/cultural note:

  • Rocky (any of them)

  • Grease (despite my wife's encouragement over the decades)

  • Seven Samurai (or any other Kurosawa picture)

  • Seventh Seal (or any other Ingmar Bergman picture)

  • South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (not a big South Park fan)

  • Borat (or any other Baron Cohen picture)

Welcome to Life.

Thanks. I only just found out about the thing myself, or I'd have given anyone interested more notice.

In case you're in LA and are interested in the score to Star Trek: the Motion Picture, there is an event within hours of now that has a ton of interesting people scheduled to appear.

http://www.lalalandrecords.com/Events.html

If they don't record this event for those of us not within earshot, I will has a sad.
