Once upon a time, I had a Swiss Army knife. My dad bought it for me when I was around 10, back when we went fishing from time to time. It was an amazing model called Cybertool with lots of screwdriver capacities, scissors, pliers, stuff. It was a series made for computer hardware work, but it allowed you to do everything a regular SA knife could, and more. Since then it had never left me, and despite losing some of the detachable elements along the way, it held true to the saying that a Swiss Army knife lasts forever.

That is, until the shooting for my graduation film. By some misfortune it fell from my pocket, and I never found it. I was a bit heartbroken, because I always used it, had it for almost 15 years, and as you can guess, I had great emotional attachment to it.

Well, to mark the occasion of my studies being over, my mom told me to get something nice that she'd pay for. So I jumped on the occasion and decided to stop being Swiss Army knife-less. After taking a good hard look at every existing model, I realized that I had no choice but to get a Cybertool again. But better than the previous one.

Introducing my new best friend for (at least) the next 20 years.

My first knife had 34 tools, this one has 41. That wood saw does NOT fuck around, lemme tell you.

Oh yeah, and the website I ordered it from had a nice engraving option.

Basically, I'm happy. It's a little thing, but I was so used to having my MacGyver pocket toolset with me all the time, that I really felt like shit when I lost it.

Now to get a good sharpening stone to make sure my knives are always ready to cut some saucisson slices.

I've thought about doing an experiment like this, but instead with a movie I loved in my childhood. Hook was the one I had in mind. I always loved that movie, and I still love it today. It would give me a chance to get to know the movie on a level I never have. I feel like Hook is a good candidate because it's a move that...

a) I love
b) was critically hated
c) is incredibly dense in every area (e.g. story, set design, John Williams' greatest score - Yes, I said it!)

I wouldn't do a blog or a podcast or anything like that, but maybe just a forum post on my thoughts after watching it for a few months straight.

Oh please feel free to do so. I have the exact same stance as you on Hook (except maybe it being John William's greatest soundtrack - I couldn't possibly pick a favourite amongst all the masterpieces he's created).

Yep, haven't watched a single episode since Kill the Moon, and I will continue to do so. I've officially dropped this show.

And for the fourth day... Well guess what? It's my movie!

Note: for a better experience of the INCREDIBLE music that was made for us, please watch this on good speakers with the volume cranked up to 56.

My work consisted in compositing half of the shots, making some of the matte paintings, and all the motion graphics.

We're proud of this little baby we finally get to release to the world. And I'm incredibly happy to be able to show it to you guys, as I've wanted to talk about it so often but couldn't.

Enjoy, and I'd greatly appreciate your feedback. smile

Como Hacer la Tempeta is the, uh, special needs child of this graduation. And its authors are all special needs children, and they rock. Have fun.

Second film, with a completely different approach. It's one of them "invisible VFX" films, with strong directorial choices.

Note that I also linked to the making-of for Korser in the first post.

This year, I figured I'd make a dedicated thread. Why? Hell, because my movie's one of them!

For some of you who may not know it, I spent the last four years of my life studying at ArtFx, a french school of VFX, CG animation, CGI and (more recently) video games. The result is my graduating last week as a compositing artist, after a jury for which 28 VFX studios (such as MPC, Double Negative, ILM, Framestore, etc.) came from all around the world to see the movies that we spent the last 10 months making.

These movies will be released one by one in the following days, starting tonight with Korser, a live-action VFX film with privateers, boats and fire (in a nutshell).

I'll post the other movies as they go online. I have no idea when mine is scheduled to be released, but as soon as it is, you'll know it. wink

Feedback (for my movie as well as the others) would be much appreciated, as well as a great deal of sharing. We're incredibly proud of what we spent the whole year focusing on, and aim to make as much noise as possible with them.

Hang in there, mates. The good news for us in France is that the air is pretty dry. The bad news is: it's reaching 40°C (>100F).

Western Europe is experiencing a particular situation called "omega block" in which a ridge (elongated high-pressure region) is in place over it, and is strong enough so the low pressure coming from the west cannot go around it. In the mean time, it brings warm air from the south. The omega is particularly easy to spot on the water vapor map:

Fortunately, storms are progressively allowed to come back (over the UK as well). They should help gobble up all this heat.

The PT kinda goes in the same kind of direction with the yellow eyes, although you seem to get them if you're already way down that path (eg Anakin in Episode III). However, the trailer for the new The Old Republic seems to go in that direction. Dude gets yellow eyes in a fit of rage, then loses them immediately when he realizes what he's done.

I'm never really cared for this new universe. It doesn't look like Star Wars at all. More like Mass Effect.

Still, this trailer is incredibly gorgeous. Blur outdid themselves this time.

PLEASE tell me you guys have seen this. I'm incredibly late to the party. This is hilarious.

I don't think that would have been very subtle. His hand is a very powerful way to convey what he's becoming. We've known about it since the end of Empire, but it was only the after-effect of his fight against Vader. Suddenly, we see it as Luke taking the same path as his father. I think it was a bit of a shock for the audience: "Oh, wow, he's turning into his father, I'd never looked at it this way". smile

Looks like the show still got it.

Hannibal S03E02 Show
The Abigail thing was great. I accepted that they had both made it (even though it didn't feel quite believable at first), and they took her away again, in a beautiful way. I've always loved how the series has a way of showing Will's mind, blurring reality and dream. It's still there all right. At no point in this episode did I completely trust what was going on, and this is exactly what a Will-centered episode should do. It certainly is a solid second episode, after last week's opening which felt like a somewhat bland recap/setup episode.

I'm getting excited for this season.

PS: another thing the show keeps being is sick. The multilated body coming to life and transforming into the stag was almost unbearable.

I think this community and these stupid games account for maybe 60% of my english capacities. It's amazing.

Seeing it for the second time today, I can only confirm that there's no point in going to see this movie in a theater if said theater has a shitty sound system. This time around - unlike the first time I saw it - the volume was good, and it changed my experience entirely. The sheer intensity of the bigger action parts of this film had me filled with adrenaline, almost breathless. I couldn't believe it. Walking out, I only wanted to get back in for a third viewing.

Fuck, this movie is amazing. Having spent the last week digesting breakdowns and talks about the VFX, I find the work done on it absolutely insane. It's seamless, the kind of VFX I love. I'm so happy they went with such colorful aesethics (which wasn't the case in the first place; early promo pictures show a more traditional gritty post-apocalyptic style). The night sequence is stunning, and is somewhat impressive when you know it was shot in overexposed day-for-night.

To anyone who still hasn't seen it, because they don't trust action movies, because they don't know the first thing about Mad Max, because waiting for the bluray seems good enough; trust me, it's not. See it in a theater, with full volume. It completely stands alone, everything you need to know is explained through world-building or just a tiny bit of smart exposition. And it's knowledge you specifically need for this story, because frankly, Fury Road doesn't care about the other movies, it does its own thing.

And it's nothing like the Avengers or some other random action flick. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's redefining the genre or anything like that, it's probably too early to tell and I don't want to be over-enthusiastic about it. But damn, that's one hell of a ride, and far from being empty of character development.

D-21 before my jury. Before showing the world my graduation film. Before no longer being a student. Before taking some freakin' time off after spending pretty much my every waking moment working on a film for the past 9 months.

Yeah. I'm pretty excited about that.
