If I could open a temporal window to 1981 I would use it to send a betamax tape with the film's release date written on it and just this trailer from 2:00 to 2:07.

I came here to see if I was the only person hearing glitches....instead I got a cat in zero G.

Just because I'm curious, what causes the skipping & 1hr + dead air at the end of the file?

As you can tell I am extremely anxious, but I do want the job. , I've just never been in the position of "the bucks stops here". Right now I'm just project manager / staff engineer, if the shit hits the fan, I have a boss to hide behind.

I'll be doing long term renovations to several northeast US air force & naval bases as well as VA hospitals.
It's work that I'm interested in and the new place seems nice, I'm just worried because it's the next level...

Thanks for sharing too, moving cross country with no guarantee of a job -- with no contacts, you're a braver man than I.

Hi everyone,

So, I have a job offer on the table to become the senior mechanical engineer/project manager at a local engineering firm.  I'm 31 and have worked for 12 years at another firm (4 years as a draftsman and 8 years as a project manager).

I do mechanical work, but I don't have a mechanical engineering degree.
This is a huge jump in salary, responsibility & stress. My current job is the only one I've had in the engineering field, and I started here when I was 19. I'm married to my high school sweet heart.

My point is, I'm not big into the whole change thing.

I'd appreciate if anyone could post similar stories of how they took the big leap and it wasn't the worst mistake of their lives. Until then I'm going to continue to work on this ulcer and try to find a way to tell my boss that I'm leaving...

Thanks!

I have to agree that Conroy is my personal favorite for the Caped Crusader. I liked Keaton as a kid, but not so much nowadays. In regards to him adding a layer of crazy to the character of Bruce Wayne, I just don't give him that much credit -- he does the crazy thing in a lot of roles (Beetlejuice / Dream Team / Multiplicity, etc.).

I like Nolan & Bale's take on Bruce Wayne (although I don't credit them fully with the idea). Wayne is a douchebag shell and the real person is Batman. However, I don't really like Bale's take on Batman (gravelly voice & all). I guess we'll get into that in a few weeks.

First DiF surprises everyone with Back to the Future, now Roger Rabbit!
Admit it, someone on the forum is actually Zemeckis.
It's a conspiracy, man.

I don't have a problem with Atom being special, that would make the film work. My problem is that Atom isn't special. He's exactly like every other robot. All they ever say is that he has a 'rare' shadow program and that he can 'take hits' (like all the other boxing robots are made out of balsa wood and tissue paper?). It's the fact that they imply he's special with no justification for it. Fuck, if they said, Evangeline Lily's dead dad's soul was in Atom I'd give it to them...

I really wanted to love this movie, and in the end it was just meh. I was definitely better than "rock 'em sock 'em robots: the movie" as I initially figured it would be.

I'm putting this in Off Topic since DiF hasn't done an episode on Real Steel...

First of all, I (kinda?) liked the movie and the visuals were very impressive.
However, I'm a little confused about some things...(spoilers to follow)...

Early on it's implied that Atom has some kind emotions, that he shares some kind of connection with Max.
On a thematic level I get it, but he's just a giant hunk of metal. The personification of Atom continues right up until the climax when the ring announcers are saying he must be "programmed with the will to go on".

No other bot is treated this way throughout the film, why would anyone in this world give two shits about these robots? I think this world would've been much more like what was see at the Flesh Fairs in A.I.
Furthermore, the bots in the film (Atom included) are incredibly dumb. They have little to no A.I. all of their actions are performed live by an operator. The character of Tak states that Zues is constantly analyzing the fight and re-writing his code. That's not was we see at all in the film.

Furthermore, HOW is Atom able to survive? He's a Gen2, if you put up a Model T and a current Ferrari in a race, the Model T isn't going to win because it's an outdated & inferior model. For argument's sake, lets say you put My Mother the Car up against the Ferrari, no matter how much she WANTS to win she physically doesn't have the necessary equipment to get the job done.

Controlling Atom via voice commands seems to be a very inefficient way to operate a robot, and why does Hugh Jackman perform the actions he's calling out - even when the robot is clearly in voice activation mode instead of shadow mode? I guess it's supposed to be because he was a boxer and is therefore incapable of saying the word uppercut without performing said action...

What I would've liked to have seen was something like THIS:

Charlie was a human boxer, he was injured & retired. He never fought robots.
Max starts off as the same video game playing punk. They get Atom ...somehow...
Max doesn't know boxing. Charlie doesn't can't work the controls well.
Charlie trains Max, and Max operates the robot because his physical size doesn't matter when he's controlling a robot.

I thought all of the operators in the film were strange. Rednecks & punks and gangsters, they all seem like the kind of people you'd find in any underground fight club -- but this isn't fight club. Someone has to program these things. Someone has to build them & repair them.  In my opinion they participants should've looked more like the types of people you'd see building battle bots. If fact, it's shameful that the crew of Mythbusters were not invited in for a cameo. I'd love to have seen Grant w/ old age makeup playing himself in 20 years.

Okay, rant off, I look forward to discussing this with anyone bored enough to respond big_smile

Can we puh-lease show Sofadogs some love? Jesus...Pavlich is gonna off himself....
This isn't a pity post either - I've listened to many Sofadogs film commentaries and they're usually quite good, even if Pavlich is a bit more subdued than DiF.

My only complaint, the volume for some of the files is a little low sometimes.

Cool Story Bro: I was listening to a sofdogs show followed immediately by an episode of The Intermission, Teague nearly blew out my car speakers with his, "HEEEEEEYYYYYY It's the intermission!!"

Still, Se7en is brilliant for all the reasons you guys mentioned and has more atmosphere than Lambs, and doesn't resort to the 'boss fight' cliché at the end, which even Lambs succumbed to.

Se7en doesn't have a boss fight, but it does have a box fight.

Also, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and Manhunter (the predecessor to Silence of the Lambs) both came out in 1986. I was only 6 at the time so I cannot speak from memory on their impact, but it is my understanding that Henry was well received for its bold, realistic and unflinching take on serial killers.

They are certainly both better than the slasher movies released that year (Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Psycho III, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II)

Thanks for articulating your points Bullet3, I think there is some merit to a few of the things you say, but I disagree with the point you make below:

bullet3 wrote:

The costumes and set design is really ridiculous to me, without being grounded enough in reality, to where it gets a bit grating after awhile. I think I just would've liked something more in the vein of Blade Runner/Alien for the future, or something like Fifth Element if you want to look to an example of wacky designs that still feel grounded. At the same time, I feel it's not nearly ambitious enough, because all of the focus remains in hill-valley, and you can tell they've just redressed all the sets from part 1.

Both Zemeckis & Gale have stated that they didn't want to spend a lot of time in the future because predicting the future is hard and your film will look stupid if it's full of lame predictions. The hook at the end of part I was just a joke that needed to be paid off. (You COULD totally remove 2015 from BTTF2 if you add an insert of young Biff finding a 1985 Sport's Illustrated in the trash on main street..maybe Doc was cleaning out the DeLorean before sending it back to 1985).

One thing to remember is that BTTF2 was shot in or around 1988, so I think it's fair to say concept art for costumes and sets could have been started as early as 1987. Zemeckis & Gale do talk about their vision of the future on the DVD commentary for BTTF2.  They specifically dialed up references to Asian culture because in the late 80's it seemed as though the USA would be bought out by the Japanese. Also, look at fashion in the 80's, if you amped up the ridiculousness of that decade's fashion I can see how they went off the wall in BTTF2. I think it's a matter of perspective. In 1989 it probably didn't seem TOO far fetched, as scary as that may seem...

In regards to future cars, many of those cars were concept cars produced by American car companies & reused for the film - and I the police cruiser was inspired by the Bladerunner spinner.

Lastly, I don't think there was any way around redressing the sets since so much of the action takes place on a backlot set. The first move extensively redressed the set to go from 1955 to 1985. For me that's part of the charm of the trilogy. Hill Valley is supposed to be the odd little microcosm of America, I think it would have been hard (i.e. expensive) to duplicate that feeling if actual locations were used.

Unrelated: in the commentary DiF talks about how they mentally dealt with the disappearing siblings in the photo while viewing the film as children. I was truly disturbed by that concept as a kid. In 1985 Dave (the older brother) leaves to take the bus to work. Later in 1955 his head is gone...I was convinced for years that there was a headless Dave corpse on the bus in 1985. I had nightmares about it.

it seems this podcast was done without the chat room (to preserve the surprise I suppose..)

I was hoping we could discuss some of the alternate drafts, etc (Maybe DiF does, I'm only 20 minutes in)...

I LOVE the idea from an early draft that Doc is a video pirate & that Marty is the bootlegger that video tapes the movies (hence why Marty has Doc's video camera at his house). It really explains the relationship between Doc & Marty. I've never had a problem with the relationship, but I know many people that think it's odd for a 17 year old to pal around with a 70+ year old mad scientist.

It also could explain the big amp, you bootleg movies for me, I'll build you a big ass amp (because he's certainly doesn't have the money to PAY Marty, but he might have the parts to build the amp).

Hello there folks, as it say over there to the left I'm Braedan51. That name was originally chosen for my half elf druid in the original Everquest and it has just stuck. I don't have any idea where the 51 came from as it has absolutely no bearing on my life..

I was born & raised in New York, but not the city. I'm a suburbanite. I hate anyone that refers to Long Island as 'Strong Island'. I'm a mechanical engineer because I didn't have the balls to risk my financial future and make films. Sadly, I'm still broke-ass poor.

I found DiF (and several other wonderful podcasts) through Zarban's site - seriously Z I don't know how many people you've turned onto DiF, but we're all in your debt. I love good films and bad movies. I have a soft spot for horror movies. I always felt utter disdain for most of the big budget garbage, but I could never articulate WHY. Thanks to DiF, that's all changed.

I try to be in the chatroom as often as possible and I'm a whore. I'll say anything in hopes of getting a mention on air, sometimes I succeed.

The biggest surprise I have found while listening to DiF is just how much of a fan I have always been of Trey - even before I knew who he was.  The 1988 remake of The Blob has been one of my favorite films since its release. I also own, Pet Semetary II, The Abyss, Robocop 2, Species and Starship Troopers.

To be fair, I bought Species for Natasha Henstridge's breasts, but the puppetry is very well done too.  big_smile

Also, does anyone know where I can get the shampoo to kill chrono crabs?
