Been feeling a bit under the weather recently and felt like I was gonna get rusty with my 3D work and drawings!

So I began work on modelling this bust, making it up as I went along. My plan is to get this guy looking like he belongs in a tell tale game ala The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us. Eventually I'm gonna rig and skin him too so I can practice facial animation. Could be good for my portfolio!

The video is a timelapse of approximately 3-4 hours. Need to add in teeth and a tongue still. Any critique would be welcome! smile

Lately I've been watching Community and Awake. You folks heard of Awake?

Awake is certainly an interesting one. It's a show that lasted only a season before it was cancelled but it had an interesting premise. The basic premise is that a detective gets into a car crash with his wife and son. His son dies in the crash and life continues on. Except that when he goes to sleep, he's awake in a reality where it was his wife that died instead.

To him, both realities feel real to him. He sees psychiatrists in both realities that are trying to convince him that the other is just a dream. He works different cases in the realities but each reality appears to be giving him clues for the other case.

The acting is rather good, a good sense of intrigue and cinematography to help differentiate the two realities. It received positive reviews from critics but people just weren't watching it. There's no dvd/blu-ray of it so you can only check it online I guess.

I brought it up in a topic a little while ago, how about Silent Hill (2006)?

Could be an interesting movie to tackle, great practical effects, always potential for fixes and general discussions. It's either one of the better if not the best of the "videogame" movies or one of the worst depending on who you ask.

Silent Hill (2006)

An interesting one really, I have mixed feelings on it. I'm a fan of the games and I think that this is one of the better video game adaptations out there.

As a fan, the main issue that gets brought up is the lead character Harry Mason was turned into Rose Da Silva. The director essentially wanted an all female cast and felt that Harry Mason (upon playing the game) had traits that would traditionally be associated with a mother, aka being compassionate and comforting to other characters, and going through hell to save their daughter. Ignoring all the unfortunate implications that this change now implies, the studio didn't like such a female dominance in the film and demanded a male character be thrown in.

This gives us Sean Bean as the husband to the main character. His scenes in the film are interesting in their own right. He's going after Rose to try and bring her and their daughter back safely and he's will to do anything to accomplish that. However his scenes feel tacked on (as they were) and actively pulls you out of the tense atmosphere that Rose's scenes provide. Sean Bean is quite good in this film and it honestly makes me wonder, why bother with making Harry into Rose if you've got him in it? I feel like he could of made a great lead.

Enough on that subject, lets talk about something else. The set and costume design. Give these people a medal, good lord. The atmosphere that the sets provide is very much like the games. Special props to the "double dare you" bathroom scene and the nurse scene.  The sets are gorgeous to look at and not to mention the variation to the sets. Take for instance, the setting of the school. They had to keep track of four variants of it, the foggy abandoned variation, the hellish otherworld variation, 1970s still being used version and modern day abandoned version.

The monster design is also really impressive. All of the monsters bar CG bugs are skilled performers in costume and make up. They give unsettling, disturbing performances that are almost ruined by having additional CG applied and making them look fake. Special mention to that are the "grey children".

Its obvious that a lot of love was put into the film, occasionally doing shot for shot moments from the game.  However theres occasional moments of plot weirdness, lines and the odd hammy over the top acting at times that drags the movie down.

I'd definitely suggest at least checking it out. Hell, it could even make for an interesting podcast. In the end, I suppose it's YMMV. I looked past its flaws to see all the workmanship that was put into it with its sets, props and make up work but others might not be so forgiving.

I heard that the sequel was pretty bad but it had a different director and writing team on that one. I haven't seen it so I can't really say.

I'd like to get to something like that level. It should also be noted that when I said tracing, I'm tracing over this image:
And trying to match it as best I can. The colors used are sampled from averages at those points in his face, hence the blotches.

So while your rendition isn't what I'm going for, you didn't exactly have the image to take anything from, and that's a great job you did!

Ah I see! And that's fine, with your reference picture I can see that I'm definitely wrong about the amount of hair and the placement of the ear. His ears are higher up on his head than the average person which threw me off a little, haha.

I suppose you can still take potential techniques and what not. I've found for myself that drawing boils down to practice and borrowing techniques (to which tracing can certainly be counted, at least in the beginning) to eventually make your own style smile

Blotting down colours is a good way of getting started, its just refining it afterwards. It's looking good! smile

Yes basic stuff I know. This is where I'm currently at, albeit very WIP.

I'm looking into how to make a realistic-based painting, but not completely photoreal. Trying get those shades correct.

Ultimately, I'd love to just turn off the ink layer and have it look perfect, but I wager that'll take a good couple of years worth of practicing.

That's basically what it boils down to, lots of practice.

As for your picture, it's looking good!As for the colouring, I'd suggest blending your colours together more as right now, they are more like quick blotches. This is more noticeable with the hair. Blend those colours more and try to follow the flow of the hair with your colours. You've got the right places for your shadows, you just need to push them further.

I did a paint over on your picture to show what I mean:

Maybe something like that? I  tweaked your line art a little by reducing the amount of hair and the position of the ear.  I also thickened some lines to indicate weight and depth as well.  Hope I've helped! smile

Curious as to how you color those? I recently bought a Wacom Intuos, and I'm picking up drawing again. Currently doing a tracing draw, but I'm not... good at coloring.

Ooo, Intuos tablets are lovely things! I'm saving up for one to eventually replace my Wacom Bamboo Fun/ Its pretty old but its done me well! I'm not the best at cleaning up my lineart and my pen doesn't help in regards to that so I've developed quite a quick but sketchy art style that I'm happy with.

As for colouring them, I use the art program GIMP. One layer for the initial sketch (occasionally scanned in, mostly drawn from scratch using the paintbrush tool), one for the cleaned up line art (I use the paintbrush tool with a custom setting, it's sorta triangular and mimics pen strokes quite well), one layer for the shading (pure black paintbrush tool with the layer set to about 30/40% opacity) then another layer for flat colours using the standard paintbrush tool again. When it comes to colour schemes, I just tend to go by eye with what seems to fit.

Depending on how complicated the drawing, I make a layer for each colour that I use or each character, etc. Alongside other effects depending if the picture demands it such as gradients, drop shadows and what not. Hope that helps!

A 3d gun model I made for my game project at university. Took less than 2 days of modelling, 1 day of unwrapping it for textures and about 2 days of texturing. I don't know how bad/slow I am at it. I'm curious as to what you all think!

This week I've been watching quite a few movies!

Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2
"The Bride wakens from a four-year coma. The child she carried in her womb is gone. Now she must wreak vengeance on the team of assassins who betrayed her - a team she was once part of."
Watched them back to back with a few friends and I still love it. I always point to the burial scene as a prime example of just how powerful sound design can be whenever someone tells me that sound in movies or games aren't important. I think its a great duology (is that the right word?) and it annoys me that we don't have more female action hero leads (hurrah for Katniss!) as these two films are a great example to use for that debate.

The Crow
"A man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder."
Quite the cult classic as I'm sure everyone here is aware of. Not much to say but I really liked it! A tragedy to what happened to Brandon Lee and the instance of digitally stitching together Brandon in his final scene is well done for the time (though if you look carefully, you can see the edges of the footage and whatnot) Brandon as Eric owns the role and I couldn't see anyone else playing him.

Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run)
"A young woman in Germany has twenty minutes to find and bring 100,000 Deutschmarks to her boyfriend before he robs a supermarket."

Another cult film! I watched it in the original German language. I've seen it a few times and I still find it an enjoyable film. It feels like one of those films where giving it a bigger budget would have made the film worse. It plays to its strengths because of its lack of money.

I always like time travel stories and this has an interesting video game "reload the level" style of time travel that I've not really seen elsewhere except for maybe The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Good Bye Lenin!
"In 1990, to protect his fragile mother from a fatal shock after a long coma, a young man must keep her from learning that her beloved nation of East Germany as she knew it has disappeared."

Not sure if this is a cult film or not but this film has a lot of heart in it. Again, I saw it in the original German language. Obviously takes inspiration from a huge historical point in Germany's history with the rejoining of the east and west. It follows a family who was on the eastern side having to rapidly adapt to western life then having to pretend that none of it had happened. How can you find communist jarred pickled gherkins if all the shops around you no longer supply them because of all the western chain stores moving in? Etc.

In some regards, its similar to other films where a character tells a lie to protect someone and that lie gets bigger and bigger until its starts to get impossible to keep the lie going. Fortunately there is no 2nd act misunderstanding that plagues movies but it does culminate in a very memorable and visually striking scene for the film.

Very much a slice of life with bits and pieces of comedy, it has a very melancholy feel to it. It doesn't have a happy ending nor a sad ending. It's very introspective and I like that the film makes you think.

All in all, I'd recommend all the films I watched this week!

Hey everyone, I thought I'd post some of the stuff I've been doing! One of my goals is to break into the games industry, preferably as a character modeler. Maybe one day to start up my own company!

I thought I'd post some stuff I'm working on at the moment, feel free to critique me, give me feedback and such.

At the moment, I'm currently approaching my end at a games design course in university and our final year project is to make a little game! the lecturers select the best 6 projects and enter them into a games showcase where we compete against other universities and are judged and awarded prizes by companies from the industry (Last year, Rockstar and Sumo Digital appeared!)

The game itself is a 4 player sci fi arena shooter where the players guns are non-lethal. They blast air (think like those guns in Minority Report) The environment itself is full of death traps!

I was put in charge of making one of two player characters along with helmets so here is what I made:

http://i60.tinypic.com/vosphv.png
http://i59.tinypic.com/1zfuesm.png

The game also has a degree of customisation, for example you can change your team colour and the model will reflect that with the colour of the clothes and lights. You can also swap out different helmets!

This week I've watched a bunch of films!

War Of The Worlds (2005)

Really an interesting film. Lovely visuals, a grim and dark tone, I'm a fan of the story to begin with and it's interesting to see how they've modernised the time period for the film  but it does have it's problems.

I think the major thing that urks me is the ending. Not the fact that the aliens die due to the common cold, but due to the main character's son survives. Not only that but somehow managed to beat the main character to the house. It loses all dramatic weight and just generally feels cheap. I didn't have too much of a problem with Dakota Fanning though she could be a bit shrill and she feels like a prop that has to be dragged around at times.

My other issue is with the aliens themselves and their design. After spending so much time with the tripods, seeing the aliens and their rather generic design feels disappointing. They don't particularly look that scary. Hell, the camera probe has a more intense scene than they do. I would of cut the scene where the aliens are in the basement, making the only reveal of the aliens is at the very end of the film. The scene where the tripod 'vomits' out the alien. Even then, I feel that they should have it so that you see maybe only a hand flop out. Not the moment where it shrieks at a man with a gun then appears to fossilize. It still gives the mystery of the aliens and their ulterior motives behind conquering earth.

The film got me listening to Jeff Wayne's Music Version of War Of The Worlds so theres that! Haha.

UUULLAAAAAAAAAA

The other film that I was saw was the animated film, Perfect Blue (1997)

If you fancy a psychological thriller then this is one that definitely likes to play with your head. It's hard to talk about the plot because you don't want to spoil anything. Perfect Blue is definitely one of those movies that takes you on a ride that has you guessing what is real. I suppose the latest film that is like it to compare to (that I can remember) is Black Swan (2010)

What I can tell you is that the basic premise follows Mima, lead singer of a Japanese idol band called "CHAM!". She decides to leave to follow a career as an actress, from there the film follows her on her first acting project. Some of her fans don't seem happy about it.. and neither does she?

So there is your hook!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6b/Labyrinth_ver2.jpg
Fifteen-year-old Sarah accidentally wishes her baby half-brother, Toby, away to the Goblin King Jareth who will keep Toby if Sarah does not complete his Labyrinth in thirteen hours.

This week, I decided to dip into some childhood nostalgia and watch Labyrinth!  Even to this day, I still have trouble spelling the title.

I love this Henson production, warts and all. It feels like a timeless movie to me and may I say, the puppetry on this film is beautiful to look at (of course this is to be expected from Henson!) Hoggle gets a great big mention for the complexity of his design. Multiple puppeteers controlling the face and voice in tandem with the actor's performance, combined with some great lines and an interesting personality makes you think of him as a character rather than a puppet.

The visuals have a wonderful dream-like concept  art vibe to it. I think special mention goes to the Escher room in the final act and the "As The World Goes Down" ballroom scene, I remember these scenes the most when recalling the film. I liked Bowie in this film, I thought he played a great villain. His look has become very iconic in pop culture and this film is what got me into Contact Juggling. The ball manipulation segments of the film to give the impressive that Jareth is magical was performed by Micheal Morschen, creator of modern contact juggling, hidden behind Bowie and acting as his arms. He essentially had to perform blind which seems even more impressive to me!

As I mentioned it does have a few flaws, mainly a few timing issues. I'd personally cut the "Fireys" scene out as it adds little to the plot, in my opinion has the worst song of the film and oof, the green screen effects have not aged well. The green screen was due to the complex nature of the puppets themselves as they can detach from one another, they simply wouldn't be able to hide the puppeteers. As much as I like their designs, I feel like they aren't needed at all.

I'd also trim the goblin city attack down in time. Whilst fun and energetic, it feels like a situation where they built a set and were determined to show off all of it to get their moneys worth. Due to spending the whole movie with the goblins, we know how incompetent they are and because of this, they won't be life threatening to Sarah. There feels like there is no stakes or tension in this run around the city. I'd maybe change it so that you still have the chase and such but all throughout the city, there are clocks showing how much is left in the time limit aka not much at all. That begins to throw seeds of doubt into the viewer if Sarah will make it in time as she is being chased around the city.

I also find it fun to find out that the owl in the opening credits was the first CG animal in films!

You remind me of the babe!

Hi! My names Sam Duckworth and this sounds like a post for film addicts anonymous.

I'm British, soon to be 21, animation enthusiast and currently training to be a games developer! I specialize more in 3D character modelling although I do dabble in composing and 3D animation.

I found out about this lovely place by the luck of the random button on tvtropes! Fancy that! That random button introduced me to my favorite podcast. I've been a long time lurker but I decided to take the plunge and join the community. Favorite film is Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind to which I enjoyed listening to your commentary on! Its nice to be here! big_smile

It was a rough ride to sit through. I could only do it because I was watching it with friends and we were both discussing our shock at it. If you guys did do an episode on Foodfight! then holy crap, I'd be incredibly impressed.

It was particularly hard for me as I'm on a games design course so I've dabbled in 3D animation. Even with my passing knowledge of animation principles, I knew I could do better!

It certainly could! Apparently whilst in development, the movie was stolen and had to be cobbled together with what's left of the budget. But bare in mind, this was around the time of Monsters Inc! Here's what the trailers showed it as, which manages to hide it's level of awfulness by picking the best animated parts of the movie... Which says something, really.

In this last week, I've been watching a few films! Some great, some absolutely awful.

The great? Children Of Men. Found it to be a really engaging sci-fi movie that was neatly written and the direction on it was incredible. Some of those oners, even if they were stitched together were amazing to watch.

The absolute awful? Well... As an animation buff, I have the dubious honor of watching Food Fight. Started development in 2001, pegged as a "Toy Story Killer", cost $45 million to produce (though its rumoured to be closer to  $65 million!) and released last year and made roughly $70k in the US Box Office. It is honestly a terrifying train-wreck that you can't help but watch.

So what beauty does it contain?  To name a few...

  • Characters who's eyes/irises don't move, just endlessly forward.

  • Broken mo cap animations

  • Texture quality that you could find on a PS1

  • Some dialogue lines that are LITERALLY phoned in

  • An all-star cast including Charlie Sheen, Christopher Lloyd, Hilary Duff and Wayne Brady

How about Jumanji?

Not sure how well its aged but I remember it being  a good film andI remember seeing "making-of" shows about all the effects they were doing in it.
