The burning Ent in the Two Towers has always been called "Jacko" among my friends.

Personally I liked the Treebeard in the movies. It may be a nostalgia as he was pretty much as I had imagined him when I read the books when I was young.

But to me the best part of John Rhys-Davies Treebeard is his rendition of the burárum speech. Whenever my son is sick or is fighting the brave fight against going to sleep. I take the little guy on my shoulder and do my Treebeard impression. It usually does the trick in less than five minutes. I guess it’s the rhythm and the rumbling of the voice that puts the boy under.

I think you could make three movies out of F.Herbert's books but they do lack some cinematic quality.

rtambree like you said:

A lot of the criticism about John Carter was directed at its bland scenery.

Because of some personal problems I haven't seen John Carter but I suspect that's some kind of Johnny-come-lately explanation. I don't think the scenery makes or brakes a movie. Rich breathtaking scenery is a bonus but if you have a compelling story these things should not matter (Lawrence of Arabia).

How about Band of Brothers style single season 10 ep. production?

We would have the Paul's story as a through line where we would follow his lineage. But we would also explore Bene Gesserits better (don't make them bald), the political movers and shakers of the universe. Same goes for the Navigators guild. Time could be spent on political, religious, ecology and technology aspects of F.H's world building.  If we draw from all five of Herberts book but use most of it as a reference to the world building (like P.J. drew from The Silmarillion for the LOTR trilogy).

The main mantra making 10 ep. single season Dune would have to be "show it, don't say it". Get rid of all the inner monologues.

p.s. I would like to see Edric but he's not in the first book.

Yeah the 'historical sources' bit was nice. Don't know if he was the first but you see this all over the place today.

The music always bothered me but then again Toto and Brian Eno were never my guys to begin with.

What's your favorite text or quote from the books?

For me I always liked

The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience.

But probably the most famous one is the "Fear is a mind killer"

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Who would play who is one of my favorite party games. But I'm coming up blank on somebody to play Paul. I tried looking over actors in that age range on IMDB and nobody seemed to fit the bill. I would put the casting directors from Game of Thrones on the job. I feel they have not put a put a foot wrong.

Mother Superior was well done but the whole Bene Gesserit Sisterhood aspect was shallow. But I guess that's basically the movie's main overall problem.
Lady Jessica was good but the hair was... well... of an era.

The Weirding Shield was just asinine and the stillsuits looked like mock up prototypes.

And the music... oh god... Dune, Highlander, Blade Runner... I blame the drugs really.

Pretty much this ^

I've read all the books written by Frank. Haven't read the 'cash in on my daddy' one's. Don't know why really. I think I can separate them in my mind but I've never been into books written "in the spirit of", be it friends or family of the orignal author.

You met Frank? How did that come about?
I once met the icelandic au-pair Tolkien had to brush up on his icelandic. That's the only connection I've ever had with the greats smile

The world is too complex for a 2 hour movie. There are things in the movie I liked but all in all it's a mess of a movie.  The '3+ hour' version is better but there is so much that could be better it's frustrating to watch them.

The stories are too niche (like John Carter) but sometimes I fantasize about MMORPG style game but that's just mental masturbation.

There were nice things in the tv series but like the movies they did not really do the job.  I think the 3 x 3 hour LOTR treatment would be nice but it would probably be a sinkhole for money. It's just to niche for mainstream movie goers.

But I feel like most things in life (books, movies, music etc.) if everybody like and "get it" it's so watered down and pseudo intelectual it's basically crap.

The discussion about LOTR went briefly down the rabbit hole into a discussion about Dune. It prompted the question from Ewing.

Why the fuck are we talking about Dune?

Simply because the Frank Herbert´s world of Dune is awesome for us sci-fi/fantasy nerds.

The movie was not good. I don't even think it merrits a DIF commentary unless it would be a study of errors. There are many reasons why the mess of a movie was presented to us. Squiggly_P summed it up quite well:

To be fair, Dune was a botched production. The opening was supposed to have visuals and be a thing. The opening we got was only due to the studio getting cold feet halfway through and screwing the movie over. It's mildly better now, I think. I recall the last version I saw had cobbled together what would have been the intro in the form of unused matte paintings and elaborate storyboard / concept art. It was long, tho. The intro for that movie is like ten minutes, but it feels like three hours.
Lynch: I wanna make this movie based on the Dune novels
Studio: Well, what's this 'Dune' stuff all about, then?
Lynch: It's a sci-fi novel about people who live on a desert planet and some rebels who start a war...
Studio: Hey, that sounds a lot like Star Wars!
Lynch: ...Erm...  yeah...  it's kinda like star wars...
Studio: Here's a bunch of money!
18 Months Later:
Studio: Hey there, Dave! Let's see this Dune movie you've been working OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS HOW DID YOU GET ME TO PAY FOR THIS YOU CRAZY FUCK!
Lynch: Trust me, you give me more money and another year and this movie will rock.
*Studio has kicked Lynch from the chat*
*Studio has banned Lynch*
*Alan Smithee has entered the chat*
Alan Smithee: You assholes!

I just wanted to create a thread where we can discuss the stories, whe world and the movies. What do you guy's think?

Neil Gaiman's view's on piracy.

Granted, there is not a one to one translation between piracy of books and movies and this does not neatly apply to the big movie studios. But I've always thought this was a valid addition to the discussion about internet piracy.

LOTR was a running joke

Sorry I did not want to hijack the discussion regarding Dune but only to comment on the filmmakers choice how they started their movies. But about the Peter Jackson and the production of LOTR.

Over the years I’ve met a lot of industry people from Hollywood. What I’ve gathered from different sources I’ve never really seen written about. The revisionist history has whitewashed the unbelievable attitude and negativity the production of LOTR faced from the filmmaking industry.

Before the movies started to come out The production of LOTR was a running joke in Hollywood. People could not bad-mouth the entire endeavor enough. New Line was going bankrupt, because you know, they were idiots. Peter Jackson was a hack who had conned him self onto a project he was in no shape or form able to complete. Richard Taylor and Weta were a joke in the vfx world. The actors who went to New Zealand were never going to work again and so on.

What I’ve gathered is that Hollywood took the standard “everything I’m not involved in is shit” attitude to another level when it came to LOTR.

Off course when the movies successfully came out nobody recognized ever having said anything but good things.

I remember reading TheOneRing.net religiously at the time when the movie was in production. I was working in a book store at the time and collected all the magazines who wrote about it and read it over and over again. But whenever we would meet anyone connected to Hollywood or the industry (filmmakers working here on projects, technicians from Lucas Farm tuning the THX in movie theaters and so on) I’d hear this undertone of negativity to almost pathological hate. People seemed to have almost psychotic hopes for the project to fail and fail spectacularly.

I’m not saying these people I talked to at the time and later had these views but they told me about how hateful the unofficial discourse was.

Today everybody seem to be on team LOTR and I have the same feelings when I hear them talk as when I see old germans. “On which side were you REALLY on in the old days?”

Heheh. True but I'm not comparing the movies.
But I am comparing the stories the movies build on and the similarities in how the filmmakers chose to open their films.
