Alan Partridge (2013)

Found this while Netflix surfing, had never heard of the character before, but love Steve Coogan and doubley love Colm Meaney so I gave it a watch.

And I was really surprised tbh, the character (Which is apparently a long running Steve Coogan character) is annoying as all get out, but Coogan always manages to tow the line before it becomes entirely aggravating. The story is interesting enough, pulling just enough A Dog Day Afternoon references to fulfill the hostage movie criteria, without becoming a full blown parody. And the characters are all flesh out, and you really do start to feel for Colm's character by the end.

All in all, I really enjoyed, it definitely has a very British sensibility to it, mixed with Coogans own unique brand of wild and weird. Some genuinely hilarious moments and clever writing throughout. Colm Meaney is great as usual.

It's probably not for everyone, but I enjoyed it.

I wasn't even that kid growing up, but I damn well was while I was watching that trailer tongue

I watched a lot of Voyager on tv when I was in middle school and then transitioned to DS9 later on. I don't think I would have been interested in TOS or TNG at that age (or earlier) whatsoever.

It was kinda meh until ALL THE TIE FIGHTERS. That was legitimately hilarious.

Aside from being seriously cool, that is a damn impressive stabilization.

Niche interest in these parts, but I'm proud of it. This is the pvp arena I built for the modded minecraft server I play on.

And if you wanna see a a quick tour and play test of a slightly older version of the arena:

Built in just over a month by me, with a little bit of computer logistics help from one of the other guys on the server, but otherwise it's all me.

EDIT: Cause why not; a screengrab from an episode before I started building in the area. (The center of the screen is focused on where the cluster of buildings wound up going for reference)

I'm 999.99% sure that's not Luke. But the old-school Death Star Trench Run view rocked.

Also, that's not Luke in the cockpit, that's Oscar Isaac's character.

Compiled for succinctness.

You know what, I've come around on it, it plays way better on a proper larger screen.

Yeah, going off that, the aesthetic that we are seeing so far looks really nice. It doesn't seem to have that super digital feel that we were talking in the chat about with Jurassic World, but it still feels like a natural evolution from the Original Trilogy, without going the ALL digital route of the prequels. I really like it. Plus a couple of the shots in there (*cough* The X-wings over the lake *cough*) are just absolutely stunning on a "this feels like a moving concept art" level.

EDIT: I'm trying to figure out how to put this into words... the best I can come up with is... This feels like what Star Wars should look and feel like in 2014. It seems to be balancing that used universe feel in HD while still feeling like a "real" movie (to use the parlance we were using in the JW convo). The more I watch the trailer the more I'm really loving how everything looks and feels, it just feels like a modern Space Fantasy Opera should. That's about as articulate as I can be on it.

The stormtrooper part felt surreal, I want to see more of it.

For whatever reason that guy reminded me of the Robot Chicken stormtrooper who takes his daughter to work. I hope it's the same character.

I think he meant the troop carrier. Which I absolutely agree, that image is intense.

I liked the trailer, though. It felt less like a commercial and more like a -- wait for it -- tone poem. It gives us nothing about the plot, but we get a sense of the film's tone and some neat visuals. I wish more trailers were like this.

Also, not even a single fanwank frame of the original cast.

The new saber effect doesn't sit well with me--it's the same complaint Ryan had on the ROTS commentary. Too opaque, looks painted in.

I would argue the exact opposite, I think it looks like a real solid thing...that happens to be emitting light. This version actually feels like a beam of contained plasma instead of just a bar of light.

But that aside I'll take this active living plasma look over the solid beam of light we've had til now any day. It just looks meaner. Which, at least for a Sith, is badass, I'd have to wait to see what the Jedi one looks like.

I had dreams of not being the guy to get to super fracking sugar-rush levels of insanely hyped...but yeah, fuck it...

I AM SO GOD DAMNED EXCITED FOR NEW STAR WARS!!

Alright, so you know how you can sometimes just start randomly thinking about a thing and it leads you down a really weird long path of what-ifs? This is what happened at work today, and I wanted to throw it to the group.

So there's the idea of "Your movie should be about THE most important event in that character or universe's life" that gets batted around here a lot. But I got wondering about how far that can get pushed. Specifically I was thinking about Pacific Rim, as you do, and obviously the story we got is THE most important story about that universe, it's about how the war ended. (I think that's suitably vague as to not be a spoiler). But there are tons of stories that take place in that universe that, while not THE most important would be incredibly interesting and make great stories.

And then I got wondering what would happen if GDT decided to tell one of those stories first. Would it still work? Would a story about the creation of the Jaeger program still work on it's own? What about a Saving Private Ryan-esque story about a team of Jaeger's during the Jaeger extinction? Would they work outside the context of the story we got?

And I'm not asking if "We're allowed to" or something like that, obviously rules are meant to be broken, but how far can it pushed, at what point is a story disconnected enough from THE MOST important aspect of that universe/character that it no longer ceases to work?

The example I got hung up on was the idea of World War 2. Imagining WW2 as a fictional universe that we are going to tell a story about, obviously looking at it from a story-telling point of view where your story it about the most important aspect of that universe, in most cases I think people would point to the end of the war. Clearly that's the important bit, but in reality there are THOUSANDS upon thousands of real stories that we tell and re-tell and invent new stories that fit into the structure of WW2, and the vast majority of them are INCREDIBLY interesting and fascinating, so where do those stories fit into this idea?

So anyways, that's my rambling, discuss! I'm curious what y'all think.

Bumping this to remind you guys big_smile This sunday we're hosting an alpha version of the minecraft PvP arena map that I've been building over the past few months. It would be really awesome if we could load up the map with as many players as possible.

All you need is a decent mic to be able to hop on teamspeak with everyone else, and a copy of minecraft, the rest of the info is in the thread in the original post.

So if you can make it to one or both of the sessions on sunday that would absolutely awesome and I would love to see people there! Thanks everyone!

You guys have a link to the book you guys were talking about?

If "I went to Yosemite and didn't fall off a rock." isn't a T-shirt, it damn well should be.

DAMMIT SHADOW.

Saw this thread updated, got my hopes and all.

I have issues believing that the sporadic reports of an ongoing investigation by an amateur mystery enthusiast (I assume) on a cold murder case could actually be sustainable or interesting... not mention the whole thing seems a tad bit morbid and in bad taste, but hey I'll leave judgement until I find time to actually listen to it.

So it's a non-fiction series around this one murder case?

Huh, I never realized it til now, but apparently I'm a huge fan of the WB feature animation thing.

Quest for Camelot-loved it, haven't seen it in a while, but the pit scene stills sends chills down my spine
Osmosis Jones- Love everything to do with it
Space Jam- Pinnacle of my childhood still watch it every 6 months or so
And I even liked most of Back in Action.

The Iron Giant is actually the least among them, I remember we went to go see it in theaters, but I would have only been 7 or 8 at the time, so I don't remember anything about the movie. But I do distinctly remember the giant Iron Giant poster that was in the lobby of theater when we went, (childhood memories are weird). And then I think I only ever watched it once or twice since then.
