For me, I think I will always have a soft spot for Batman Begins, simply because I like the "becoming" aspects of Batman. Dark Knight is fantastic, for the most part, but I like seeing Bruce's struggle for identity in BB.

Also, while Heath Ledger's Joker is fantastic, I don't find his motivation all that compelling, while I find Rhas al Ghul's more interesting. Not to sound contrary, but I think BB has some good material in it and is often overshadowed simply because of Dark Knight.

It's a screenplay I was writing (on and off for about 2-3 years) about an astronaut who gets knocked out during an accident during an EVA and how the rest of the crew have to send out another to rescue him, except the rescuer is an astronaut who's been 'grounded' due to sickness. The story is essentially about mistakes and the various ways different people deal with them. It's what my avatar is all about (though it's just from a random piece of artwork).

I spent a lot of time researching (which is probably half the fun of doing these sorts of projects) and watching actual EVA footage as well as thinking about how the bad stuff could happen, specifically what could cause the accident without meteor shower/aliens/random debris. In the end, I made it the SAFER itself.

A small part of me is annoyed I was beaten to the punch. But I did smile during my viewing as the first few minutes of Gravity were similar to what I had written - a female astronaut feeling under the weather as she works hard on an EVA gets mission control piping in with observations from medical, which she attempts to brush aside.

Nice. Must have been kind of weird to see that up on the screen.

At the risk of sounding both hopeful and annoying, how much research went in to John Carter? I mean, Disney's track record, at least of late (and to me, an industry outsider) has been to take known properties (John Carter, TRON, now Star Wars) and put gobs of money in to it. Maybe John Carter and TRON made them more wary, but Star Wars is a cash cow-even if The Clone Wars and Prequels were critically bad, there is still gold in them thar hills...sorry, couldn't resist the cliche.

While I'm sure that Disney will kind of do a slow dip in to the SW universe, I think once the money comes in, yeah, nothing will be off limits.

Well, that's the real trick, isn't it? And it's probably going to cost us something extra... wink

IIRC, the petition at http://originaltrilogy.com had "only" about 70,000 signatures. And as far as I know, most casual Star Wars viewers simply don't care which version they're watching. The distributors seem to think there's still a market for old Star Wars films, 'cause last month they re-released the 2011 versions in DVD + Blu-Ray combo packs. Convincing them to pay for a full restoration of the original versions (if good sources still exist) is the hard part.

I thought they touched up the original film, and that was why Luke's blade in Star Wars appeared green  hmm

I have a feeling that the super bonus edition of all nine movies will be the pack to end all packs. Maybe Disney will release the unedited OT then

Fire, I'm confused about how you draw the line between Beauty and the Beast and MASH. Where the latter is "hmm, I don't know" and the former is "oh sure all the way!"

I really don't get what you're judging on.

LOL
It's more a matter of getting me to relax and then they will relax. Usually I just turn captions on and read it, and let them fall asleep in my arms.

One thing I'll add is with trying to get my daughters to sleep, especially after a busy day, I would find a show (or movie) that relaxes me. For the most part, the show was MASH and I could lay down, let them cuddle with me, and fall asleep. My wife would complain that I stayed up too late trying to get them to sleep, but it was an incredible bonding time for me and my girls.

If you're relaxed, they are relaxed, I've learned.

Ok, ok, I should stop this but hey, sci fi is too fun not to share smile

Anyway,
one of my favorite blogs right now is called Future War Stories, which, as you may have guessed, is about military scif. I am a huge military scifi fan, having read "Starship Troopers" at 11 or so, as well as Space Cadet, and others. So, this blog is right up my alley: http://futurewarstories.blogspot.com/

Well, reading on the blog today I stumble upon this link: http://conceptships.blogspot.com/

Which basically collects all the cool sci fi ship concept art out there, be it video game, movie or independently created. It is quite a collection and if you like science fiction artwork or concept art, this might be for you smile

Apart from the stunning VFX (those render times must have been horrendous), I enjoyed the fact that the movie was NOT about saving humanity. There was no portal to close that was about to let an alien invasion take place. There was no evil super villain.

Yes, that did make it refreshing. Just plain old real adversity.

The one major inaccuracy that I've not seen anyone talk about? All EMUs have SAFERs attached to them, even when attached to the arm. These Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue packs are a little propulsive unit that fits onto the main backpack and are designed specifically to allow astronauts to move around and return in case of trouble. So Stone should have been able to stabilise and return to the shuttle on her own. I looked, she's not wearing one.

Now one could have made the argument that this was before these were introduced, back when the bigger MMU was being tested - that famous picture of Bruce McCandless doing the first untethered EVA looks remarkably like what Clooney is doing (and he says he is testing it) - in the 80s I think it was and following a typical old Hubble repair mission profile, except the film is much more likely to be set in the future with the Tiangong station completed, the ISS completed, and shuttle missions at STS-157 (we ended at 135).

Also, the station tends to have railings and handles all over it, ideally an astronaut can move across most of its surface without ever untethering (in actual fact, astronauts always remain tethered), so I was quite surprised to see Stone take numerous risks leaping from one rail to the next. Considering that she was always missing things, I would have thought that she'd be clinging on for dear life. Granted she was in a bit of a hurry.

And airlock doors wouldn't fly open like that, that would have smashed an astronaut's helmet or sent him/her flying away.

Finally, I'm pretty sure the Soyuz flight suit has to have an external power source etc. and whilst when she's detaching the parachute she has the umbilical, she doesn't later have it when she's transfering to the Tiangong. In fact, technically, she'd be wearing the Sokol suit, which isn't designed for EVA at all. However, maybe in this near future they are?

Yep, I wish I hadn't spend the last 2-3 years or so researching about this stuff for my own story, I wouldn't have noticed stuff like this.

Edit - conversely, I buy that Kowalski decides to detach himself, since Stone doesn't have an adequate anchor to pull him in. The act of pulling on the tether would have exerted force on the ropes around her leg and at the other end, which would likely have come loose as a result. You know, for every force there is an equal and opposite reaction?

Also, Gravity. I like the way it was film and struck me as a very interesting to me. I look forward to learning all about how it was made smile

Even my mom, who doesn't like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, loves the games. So, you know, family activity wink

I am wary, now more than ever with my eldest at 4, of "kids movies," because Little Mermaid definitely isn't and Beauty and the Beast I hesitate on but am ok with now. Winnie the Pooh is great and there are several different selections out there to choose, as well as movies. "Piglet's Big Movie" is actually well done.

Lion King 2 deserves mention as it is a more fun, less Hameltesque story. Much more toned down.
If you have Netflix, then it is your friend as there are several children's shows on there, such as Sesame Street, and Cailou, which is my daughter's favorite right now. Cailou is a little more accessible since it focuses on a 4 year old and uses a lot of primary colors.

Emperor's New Groove is a second step movie, primarily for the sarcastic humor, which may be inaccessible.

Also, some of the newer Tinker Bell movies are surprisingly well done.

I would volunteer for teh Hanna-Barbera thing but my last watching was "Harvey Birdman" so it would be kind of warped, you know? wink

Besides, I played Star Wars games way more than I watched the Flinstones...maybe

As for a date, I don't have one yet. We're still plowing through Whovember, and then we're pre-recording Xmas stuff. This might be after new years, but I'm airing who's ready and willing smile

I still have a good mic (working on recording my Into Darkness review) and will make sure to set time aside to get good recording space. Star Wars gaming is one of those things that I have done for many, many years, across several platforms.

Heck, I just stopped playing Star Wars: The Old Republic.

How are the extra scenes?

The dozen or so minutes of extra scenes are not really worthwhile. There's more fart jokes with the dwarves carrying on like football hooligans at Rivendell. The humour just falls flat for me. It wasn't always successful in LOTR (drinking game, dwarf tossing, burping, etc) but here it's even worse.

So forget the few minutes of longer scenes, and look forward to the commentary and hours of superbly produced extras.

Some of the extended scenes are good but not all. The extras are very much worth it, delving in to so much of the production and actors and character development. I loved all of that stuff and well worth it.

BDA: It's a classic era fan service. If all you've seen is NuWho, then you probably won't get why this is a big deal. Karn, and its sisterhood is also featured in "The Brain of Morbius" from Tom Baker's era.

Aural: It makes sense to name him the War Doctor. He's still himself, but more of a warrior. Plus, if all Time Lords had a single worded name, you'd start to run out after a while. The Stairmaster. The Ladle. The Edge. The Rock. And so forth.

The Rani?

I wonder what the Doctor will call himself since he does not acknowledge this regeneration (perhaps because of the method he used to get it). So, for our sakes, calling him "War Doctor" makes sense but I think he will call himself something else.

Also, good short and incredibly effective, even for someone less familiar with Old Who.

I don't remember if there was a ROTJ one. I actually just had that one and it was ridiculously hard. I got past Hoth once. I think there is an emulator site now so you might be able to give it a go.
I think this might work, hopefully no county restrictions:
