I fucking /love/ this movie y'all. Like, it's not even funny.
Me too, my dude. So much.
By coincidence, I just watched Moulin Rouge this weekend!
I should say rewatched. I've seen this film a good six or seven times by now, and basically agree with everything you said, except that it took me maybe 60 seconds for me to realize I was going to love this one. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it.
The music! The beauty of it! The excess! I swoon.
And I am very curious about the recent Broadway adaptation. I certainly loved hearing some Beyonce in the new Sparkling Diamond mashup. Never had the chance to see Moulin Rouge with an audience, but dang, I think it'd be fun.
STAHP IT. as if you two weren't consistently killing it in the thread. pfft.
since I'm here, thought I'd share something I came up with this week during my commute. the mashup you never knew you needed:
the jabberwocky can can
when I graduated high school, we had a dry grad with various activities to keep us all occupied until 5am; I literally just ran the karaoke station the whole time. sang a lot of adele, badly.
continuing that tradition (with slightly more vocal skill than I had in high school):
Right as Rain
Lovely, just lovely. Yay for Tori Amos in the thread!
There are few things quite as wonderful to observe as someone watching The Princess Bride for the first time.
Henry: Thank you for kicking things off in the new decade! You can all look forward to more average-at-best musical performances from me.
Abbie: *claps* Just lovely! I introduced someone to Little Shop on New Year's Day, and it got all the music back in my head.
Suddenly, Seymour / Showed me I can / (Yes, you caaaaaaaaan)
A little something from the world of Canadian musical theatre. Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story is a "sumptuous Klezmer-folk music-theatre hybrid" and it is very, very good.
Agreed! Awesome post.
The thing is that what struck me the most with Close Encounters is how incredibly low-key it plays everything, in any standard, late 70s or now. There is little exposition made, no motivations clearly expressed...There's a sense that you're just following along, trying to piece together something that is not particularly worded out for you, like the viewer is out of the picture, and the characters are doing their thing without stopping to explain it.
I had a very similar feeling when I watched the film for the first time, though I couldn't have articulated it as you have here. I just knew there was something very different about Close Encounters; I hadn't seen anything quite like it, at least not in this genre. It is, if not my favourite, probably in my top three Spielberg films. I find it mesmerizing.
I want to cherish what I love.
Like Babu Frik. Babu Frik is awesome.
Now that's an opinion I can get behind. I haven't kept up with these here Star Wars, but I enjoyed listening to Jonathan Mann follow up his infinitely catchy Baby Yoda song with this:
hey gang! had a minute and thought I'd drop by with some more Disney.
also, while I'm here: Boter, I highly respect that you are continuing to innovate in this thread. You get a heck yeah for bringing Rock Band into this.
okay I'm back with one more thing
I hear some of y'all are billie eilish fans, so this one's for you.
YouTube's content ID system aside (yes, it's the worst, we're in a bad timeline, etc.), you sounded wonderful, and that's what matters.
Oooh "Therapy" turned out so good! And thank you Abbs—you're fucking amazing.
Also, I love that I (a sad excuse for an alto) am in a place where I get to sing the high parts. It's way fun.
Henry: First of all, fantastic hats, sir. Second of all, I enjoy your musical shenanigans very much.
Regan: I would like to hear more spooky songs from you, because that was fantastic. And I love that we've got multiple layers of guitar happening in this thread - that's awesome.
Also - I think everyone on the thread should sing Dr. Horrible at some point.
Abbie: Okay, here you go: Therapy - Tick Tick Boom - LatinAlice sings Susan
The timing is a little tricky at the beginning with Jon's bit; it's sort of awkward to navigate those long stretches of silence. But I think this will be really fun when it comes together!
ha okay! it's a deal! do you want jonathan's part or susan's?!
God bless you for bringing out the Sondheim, Abbie. And DANG, excellent job with Getting Married Today, an absolutely beast of a patter song. I've never been able to articulate all the lyrics at pace. APPLAUSE FOR YOU
oh oh also if any musical theatre peeps would like to do a duet, I have a few fun suggestions maybe? "Therapy" from Tick Tick Boom or "All for the Best" are high on my list. (They sprung to mind due to their frenetic energy. Not Amy-on-her-wedding-day frenetic, but still.)
anyone with confusion about my name can, of course, refer to the introduction thread.
and if you don't know, now you know.
(Boter, you and Steph should absolutely do this one. Imma do it with Teague.)
ABBIE OH MY GOD THAT WAS SO MUCH FUN I love both of your choices (I love that I know them so I can sing along!!) and you sound so good. Such talent.
and also I'll just leave this here:
APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE
Boter: The Tango Maureen is so fun! Excellent, excellent choice. In fact, excellent choices all 'round. And I'm including Thrift Shop in this assessment; I love the variety.
Regan: This is exactly the place to sing all the parts and that was wonderful. RIDE OR DIE.
And David Bowie in Dr. Horrible would have been heckin' amazing, so...
Henry: YEEESSSS THE BATTLE OF YORKTOWN, CLAPS FOR YOU
and never apologize for the guitar, we love the guitar
BDA: Way to straight up bring out Chess, that is awesome and QUITE GOOD IN FACT. And though I know nothing about The Devil's Carnival, it makes me hope that when you join us, you do a villain song. You've got a good voice for a villain song.
With total enthusiasm:
I just want to drop in and say OBVIOUSLY this is great, you are all great, goddamn it I love you guys. I am going to bed but will listen properly to everyone tomorrow.
And while I could not participate immediately (I'm vlogging every day in September, fam, I can only produce so much video content in a day) you can bet there will be an Alice in this thread at some point. Singing with little skill and great enthusiasm.
lol forgive my overly-sensitive self deprecation alarm, it doesn’t pick up on hyperbole.
I heartily share your enthusiasm for a good singalong!
Man I wish I could sing
Oi. Regan.
Newsflash: you can. You’re good, dude!
All us musical folks outta start our own thread and quit hijacking this one I wanna hear more out of all of you.
