The Wizard of Oz
Teague's Disneyland fantasy (1:25:07-1:26:11)

We need to have a WAYDM on that movie posthaste, then, because now I'm desperate to know how someone with such good taste can hate such an amazing film.

Dorkman hates Good Will Hunting?!

My favorite variant of time-travel lantern-hanging is from 11/22/63. Paraphrased:

"What if I went back in time and killed my own grandfather?" I asked.

He looked flabbergasted. "Why the fuck would you do that?"

I love it that Alec Guiness looks just as uncomfortable as I always imagined him looking. Reminds me of this personal favorite.

Well, state your point. We have yet to see if Gravity has any influence on movies or society beyond making money, as those did.

My point is that just because it's popcorn entertainment doesn't mean it can't also qualify as a great film--as discussed in their respective WAYDM commentaries, the films I listed are great films from a pure storytelling and technical standpoint even when they're removed from their cultural impact; as far as I'm concerned Gravity also has those merits, and to dismiss it's having the possibility of being a great film just because it's "popcorn entertainment" seems unfair.

Not sure whether I buy this or not; Cracked's photoplasties are usually dubious factually, and as far as I can tell it only happens once, not every time. It'd be cool if it were true, though.

Let's not pretend that Gravity is a great movie.  I enjoyed it, but it's a popcorn flick.  Disposable entertainment.

Star Wars. Alien. Jaws. Jurassic Park. Raiders of the Lost Ark. Shall I continue?

So excited! big_smile

I still maintain that the first Transformers movie is a fairly enjoyable adaptation of an inherently RETARDED, cartoony concept (a concept that was invented to sell toys to children). It could've been a lot worse (and it's gotten a lot worse in the sequels).

In terms of just stupid fun, I recall enjoying the first Transformers; I knew what I was getting into when I watched it, and with that in mind I had no expectations to meet. Still haven't seen the second one and don't plan to; I ended up being dragged to the third by some friends and remember pretty much zip about it.

As for Episode I, any time it comes up I will offer the opinion that it is a great sci-fi movie and a terrible Star Wars film and leave it at that.

Except that half its major problems have nothing to do with it being a Star Wars movie. For example, as the guys discussed at length on the commentary—the bad guys don't do anything bad. Also, awful dialogue, awful "comic relief", a twenty-minute racing sequence that kills the pacing, etc. etc.

One thing I was surprised you guys didn't mention is the absolutely phenomenal score by Bernard Hermann. The opening credits theme is maybe the most incredibly unsettling piece of music I've heard in my life. And, of course, I have a special love for it because it inspired a lot of the orchestrations in Sweeney Todd.

The bit where Dorkman mistakes the words "Anne Hathaway" for "Anne Heche" is hilarious in context, but all of the previous setup regarding Chris Hanel was too much for its inclusion to be merited, I thought. If anyone else wants to upload it, feel free.

Sounds like the V for Vendetta clip that Anodreth mentions here.  It's at 2:13:39 to 2:15:00.  I've got it handy.  I'll clip and upload.

I had not listened to that episode before—that clip had me in tears when I played it just now.

Just FYI, everyone, I'm re-listening to The Core today, so if no one else particularly desires it I'll upload the clips from it.

Aaaaaand that clip is now posted, FYI, everyone.

Poor Miranda Otto deserves better than this.

Suffice to say it was the biggest laugh of the whole episode. It's within the last minute and a half, if you care to take a trip down memory lane.

At some point I'll need to upload Trey's "Explode dinosauh! We give you million dollah!" bit from the end of The Lost World.

Kasdan and Abrams are now co-writing the screenplay, replacing Michael Arndt; production crew announced.

Cross-posted from the HP discussion: thought of something—if you have some of the demos for your album finished or roughly finished before the marathon, playing them during one of the breaks would be great promotion.
