Got home late and stumbled across this bit of news - wtf?

The Vincent Thomas bridge is about two miles down the channel from me, I can SEE the thing from here. I took this picture six weeks ago when we were moving the boat and passed under the bridge on the way.

Jeebus, that thing is tall.

The question that comes to my mind is WTF was he even doing in this part of town?   There's not much of anything here.

Well, that's very... wait, what?

Damn - Owen is NOT messing around, folks.    Who's gonna top THAT one?    Anyone?   Anyone? smile

Orion development is still funded, it's the program to make multiple craft and use them a la the Space Shuttle that was canceled.    Unfortunate, but the US has some budget issues right now, we can't afford all the toys we'd like.   And the history of aerospace is full of prototypes that never saw actual service, but useful information can still be gained from the development alone.

NASA's hardly unable to "do anything" in the meantime, though - they're landing a new rover on Mars in about two weeks, among other things.

And afterward, a small reception at the Ramada Inn near the airport.  Followed by ridicule.

So now the victims have met two American Psychos in the same week.   Hey-ooohhh.

/sorry, but the strain of behaving got to be too much

All true enough, but the only way that good lawyer can make that case is by going to court.    JD was sending a polite but clear message that they were prepared to take that step, but giving the other party a chance to avoid it first.

But the point here isn't whether or not they have a case (they do).    The point is the very internet-savvy way they went about this.   They're not even asking that all existing copies be destroyed, and incredibly they even offered to pay a reasonable fee for a new cover design.    That's what makes this a noteworthy story, and why JD is to be commended - they didn't have to do any of those things.

By not coming across like a big company out to crush the "little guy", they not only got the result they wanted without fuss, they even reaped a nice bonus of goodwill from teh interwebz.    Brilliant.

Except the book cover DOESN'T parody their product.   It uses elements of their well-known trademark to promote the author's product.    That's what gives JD grounds to take action.   Not that they needed a make-able case to file suit anyway, if they wanted to go that route.

Which makes the fact that JD chose to try to resolve it nicely even more impressive.    Now the Streisand Effect is working in their favor.

EDIT:  In your example, the Daily Show is using and parodying Fox's material and logos in order to comment upon and criticize Fox.   That is indeed Fair Use.   The Jack Daniels book cover isn't as cut-and-dried a case, it might well take a court to resolve it.   Again, damn good move by JD to play nice, assume no infringement was deliberately intended, and handle it the way they did.

Now, if the author had responded with "Nyah nyah, fair use, can't touch me muthafarkers, eat me!" the next correspondence would have been a bit less pleasant.

Well if that's how it works, then I really do have to set up my website idea, which is called KickStopper.  It's the place you go when you see some godawful idea on Kickstarter, and you can offer the creator money to never ever make that thing.

I hereby pledge to see Battleship again only if they'll use the money to NOT make sequels.   Now that's a reward.

It's like he's trying to run a Kickstarter program for the movie.   Okay, Pete - but if you expect me to support your project by seeing it again, I want some kind of reward.  smile

I like the guy, and I think he's made some good movies.   Battleship just isn't one of them.

It's not cynicism, just a less anthropocentric worldview.  We're prejudiced to think we're awesome just because we're the ones who are doing the comparison, and there's no other species (so far) to tell us otherwise.

Neil deGrasse Tyson puts it pretty well...

It'd be like the American ambassador to Iran is killed by a sect, and the USA fires every nuclear weapon at the country killing the entire population.

Or if a species was labeled as evil and wicked according to the rules of a superior being, who then decided to exterminate them all via flood.  (Except for a very few who were deemed worthy, and were put to work saving all the other species.)

Is that the behaviour of Enlightened beings from the future?

A lot of people believe an enlightened being did the above...

The trope that advanced technology = niceness is seriously entrenched in sci-fi, but disproven time and again by our own history, right up to the present day.   I got no problem with the idea that the Engineers apparently gave us everything and then for whatever reasons of their own, one day decided to kill us instead.    There's a lab rat in a cage right now asking that same question.     Even if you tried to explain it to the rat, he's not capable of understanding.

And as I've said, the movie works fine for me on THAT level.   Sure, go ask your Creator some questions.  Good luck with that.    Just be prepared for a potentially unpleasant answer.   In the case of Prometheus, the answer seems to be something along the lines of "Holy snot, the lab rats got loose and are all over my damn control room, wtf?"

Don't forget John Carter.

I actually gave JC another chance on video this week, and, nope, didn't get any better.   And listening to the commentary track with Stanton and two of the producers (ALL of whom came from Pixar), I learned two things:

1.  They had a lot of fun making the movie.   Which is nice for them.
2.  They really didn't know it was awful.   More than once they alluded to things they were gonna do in the sequels.  (The commentary was clearly recorded before the movie hit theaters).

It was also informative to hear Stanton talk about how interesting it was to see what an "AD" did... since of course he'd never worked with one before.     No wonder the thing cost 250 million.

So, Lassetter, Stanton - forget the live action stuff, you're needed back home.    (Bird: you're good for now, you can keep going.  But try to keep an eye on things at the ranch, too, if you can.)

I finally have a place where I can post ten page interpretations of all of the Asylum films. HUZZAH!

Although 2010: Moby Dick was really about the factors that created the recent global economic collapse, it's strange that no one has written a full examination of that.  I kinda thought we were being too obvious about it, but maybe not.

Meanwhile, all the people who thought it was about the rise of feminism in post-WW2 American society are clearly insane.   Talk about reading too much into something, sheesh.

Reluctantly, I have to put Brave at the bottom of my list. *  It has many of the elements that every Pixar film has - great design, animation, lighting, good voice cast, etc. etc.  But if a Pixar film didn't have those things - well, if that day ever comes, ye shall know the End Times are upon us.

But as others said in the Brave-specific thread, this one didn't come together on a story/thematic level, and that is surprising because that's always been Pixar's greatest strength.

* Important disclaimer:  Given what's been said about Cars 2, it's possible that I might rank Brave above that one, but I haven't seen it
