Showknowing that time is running out a million times faster than it previously was.
That was the main thing for me, yeah.
I actually just finished it. It's one hell of a book, that's for sure. Just chock-full of ideas, but never losing track of its characters. It's a strong recommendation from me.
How are the sequels? It seems like there's a lot of story left to tell.
I'm about halfway through Spin right now and so far I'm finding it existentially terrifying. But in a good way.
Really don't know what you guys are on about with the action being incomprehensible. I found it perfectly easy to understand what was going on at all times, and so has pretty much everyone else I've talked to about it. I guess this is just subjective experience talking.

Unfortunately, the site censors swears, so "Red Faced Motherfucker" was out of the question.
Interesting. I've only ever heard about it in the context of people either mocking it or hating it.
So, wait, the panel really likes The Newsroom? I've never watched it, but I thought it was pretty much universally acknowledged to be terrible.

Not even this entire forum can agree on a film these days. But that's what makes it interesting, I suppose.
Bullet, I think this is a case of investment.
ShowWhen that one Kaiji sprouted wings, my jaw was on the floor. Not only because that's awesome, but because I genuinely felt connected with the characters controlling that giant robot, not to mention the world around them. GDT gives you a great sense of what this world is like right off the bat, so you can be fully invested in the characters once you start to meet them.
I get the complaints about there not being enough action, but the action that we got was so cool that I'll forgive it. As for the fights being incomprehensible, I think that's a You thing. I totally understood everything that was happening at all times. Maybe it had something to do with the IMAX screen? That probably helped.
I will agree with you about the fanboy thing. However, what other movie this summer should we be supporting? This is the only blockbuster that comes close to being "original" in any way.
As someone who has grown up with three younger sisters, that scene hit me hard.
By the way, anyone have any idea what GDT was going for with the whole "losing one shoe" motif? It happens to young Mako and Hannibal Chau, and he seems to underline it both times. Just a fun detail, you think?
Speaking of which, stay after the credits.
I find myself going back to it more than I expected for such a dark album. I think the production is a major part of that.

Dorkman wrote:I think the shots where the robot uses a big ship like a sword were supposed to be the clincher, but for me they were the nail in the coffin that this movie is going to be dumb, and most likely not fun-dumb.
NOW FIGHT.
Only if I get to be the Jaeger. They have hands that turn into plasma cannons!
Just got back. If you can't appreciate what's awesome about a giant robot bashing in the head of a giant monster using a shipping barge as a baseball bat, you have no joy left in your heart.
Surprised no one on the panel has watched The Sopranos. I just finished it, and it's really superb. Totally deserving of all the praise heaped on it, and tons of fun to watch.
But to really understand the Doctor, you've got to see the 4th Doctor storyline where he has a love affair with Chester A. Arthur. Really powerful stuff.
As someone who has no clue how people make albums, this was really interesting.
It's possible that that's just what we're seeing in the trailer. I mean, one shot shows a Jaeger keeling over in the Arctic. I'm holding out hope.
You know, if for no other reason, I'm hoping that Pacific Rim succeeds sheerly because it's so bright and colorful. Watch those trailers again. When's the last blockbuster that had so many primary colors in it? Today they're all dark and gray and grimy, with the occasional spray of red sparks. Boring.
The main appeal of The Dark Tower for me was the references to other King works. 99% of his works take place in the same universe. Seeing those connections always makes me smile.
Dorkman wrote:Kaufman is the right writer, at least. Not sure GDT has the surrealist chops for it. Not that many directors do.
Think Michel Gondry could pull it off?
Under The Dome is such a disappointment. Three episodes in and absolutely NOTHING has happened.

Yeah, wow. That movie is the definition of "stupid and awful, but fun." But best blockbuster of the year? Not by a longshot.
Really, compared to what?
Star Trek into Darkness, terrible.
Man of Steel, disappointing, soulless and repetitive.
After Earth, terrible.
Lone Ranger, terrible.
White House Down, by all accounts, forgettable and overlong.
Hangover 3, terrible.
Iron Man 3 is arguably better, I'll grant you that.
And ok, if I think about it, Oblivion is the best of the blockbusters so far, that's true.
But still, not saying Fast 6 ain't stupid as all hell, but it has been a REALLY shit year so far.
Huh. When you put it that way, you might be right. I think that you could make a case for Iron Man 3, but it hasn't been a great year for blockbusters at all.

I mean, I'd rather that del Toro made more movies like Devil's Backbone, but if this is where his heart's at, then more power to him. If this is the kind of movie we're gonna see all the time, I'd rather they be made by people with real passion for the idea than by Michael Bay-types looking to cash an easy paycheck.
I keep meaning to catch up with Haywire. My life has been consumed with watching The Sopranos recently. Almost wrapping up Season 5.
I watched Part I. It's almost unbelievable how inept it is. Here's some sample dialogue:
Atlas Fucking Shrugged wrote:"Why ask useless questions? How deep is the ocean? How high is the sky?"
"Know what I like about you, Wesley? You're a one-word man." "True."
"I look forward to working with you." "And I look forward to working directly with you." "Goodbye." "Bye."
"You have no feelings. I don't think you've ever felt a thing." "No, Jim. I guess I've never felt anything at all."
"In order to save my family's business *longest pause ever* I'm gonna have to abandon it."
And not only that, but the heroes in this movie say some things that are usually only spoken by movie villains. At one point, the male lead says, "If you double-cross me in any way, I will destroy you." The fuck?
