I am just so worried that del Toro won't find the right tone. He doesn't have a good sense of humor. I think he is often trying to be "funny", but his funny is kinda ... strange funny, rather than funny funny. Like... punching Godzilla with a ship? Seems funny. But yet... played with a ponderous seriousness that makes you wonder... is that really supposed to be as tounge-in-cheeky as it could be? He confuses me.

What confuses me is, this alleged thingamagic that is "using" the phrase "down in front" in connection to movie commentaries? I mean, you are sure this is not you from the future or someting, coz, Google surely finds no other "Down In Fronts" than thyselves?

Hey - I said I tolerated here. Only it was just barely.

I preffer the Doctor's companions Spunky. I don't find rose Spunky.

She sorts in the "kinda thick" category, with Donna.

Aaaabsolutely LOVED Oblivion.

To paraphrase Trey: it's not perfect - but I'm SO GLAD they make these movies!

I gave it a 9/10. After thinking about how much fridge-logic there actually is, maybe I'll push that to 8.5/10.

It didn't touch movie-of-the-year (Wreck-it Ralph, 10/10) but it's a good 2nd so far.

ENOUGH WITH THAT DAMN RIVER SONG ALREADY!

In short: not the weakest season yet(season 6, sans The Doctor's Wife) was horrible, but they've got a lot to do to make it good.

Also, fire Smith.

Wow, how many ways can I possibly disagree with you?

* I rather take one Moffat script than five Russel T Davis ones
* I find Tennant grossly overrated - I much preffer Smith.
* River Song is probably the awesomest thing that has happened in Who-dom. Not only is Alex Kingston cool, the whole wibbly-wobblyness of heir intertwination w. the Doctor is Awesome (tho I agree that the start of "Lets Kill Hitler" glossed over WAY too many stages of her development, that was half a season of potential Awesome turned into a montage of bizarre madness)
* I can barely stand Rose. Unfortunately she'll be in the anniversary episode. Just HOPE we don't get Mickey or Rose's horrendous Mother!

Thanks Teague.

To be clear, of all this, I did *nothing*, with an extremely small exception of helping him fix the tracking of ONE shot.

The rest is all the brainchild of my middle son Oscar (the older of the kids fighting in the movie, he used his oldest brother as cameraman). Everything from concept to sound design to effects work is all Oscar.

Heck, we had no idea this was going on during the vacation - we only heard odd noises from the kids room next to ours.... smile

So my kids... yeah. We were on vacation in Egypt. They made this "Travelog film". So "Episode 7" of the travelog contains.... a somewhat surprising sequence:

See it at http://bit.ly/SwedishTeenagePillowFight

If you use the embed below, the "Action" starts at 11 min 37 seconds...

So here's what I liked about the end of this.

Dredd *passes* her for a very obvious reason... yet they do not state it. Just like before, it is all glances.

And if you missed the reason? She does NOT lose her primary weapon.... she just loses the gun.

Her primary weapon being - obviously - he Psi abilities.

I'm with trey on the dead-man's switch. A properly design dead-mans system would not send a "continous" stream, but rather, small "I'm still alive packets" at intervals. If sufficiently many of these packets are missed - kablooey. There could, of course, be an explitic "Oh, person diead, kablooey NOW" packet in addition.

Ideally you use a 2-way handshake protocol so that single missed packets can be retransmitted. It's not rocket science. Standard WiFi would work fine.

Also, I don't really agree Dredd "grows" in the movie, and if so, very little. It seems you guys missed WHY SHE PASSES THE TEST?

Like many people, I was very "Tennant" but Smith won me over rapidly, and right now I'm hardcode Smith.

I started "new series" first, so I also liked Eccleston for a while, but I really didn't like the low-rent nature of Rose and her family (Rose's mom bugs me the hell out, as well as her useless boyfriend guy). I think the "level" of companions have upped drastically w. Smith (tho I'm actually happy that Amy/Rory left coz they had overstayed their welcome, and I while I liked Amy, Rory was played so blandly that... no). I'm intrigued by the newest companion (who has now died, and resurrected? Are we gonna get a "Who Killed Kenny" element to the doctor?). And I love the newest blue-laser Tardis interior. Mmmmm....!!

I've dabbled in "older doctors" (had my fair share of Tom Baker) and while I still like "the doctor" as a character and a thing, I have it rather hard to get away from the extreme cheesiness of the produciton, most notably in the area of audio, which is very 70's "you get whatever was there on the day, basta" including the sound of feet on "wooden sets that are supposed to be space metal" and such [you can much easier forgive bad visuals to bad audio].... the production values on the new series are just awesome in comparision, and keep getting better.  I just hope they stop w. the Daleks, I'm *SO* tired of them.

I don't get the dislike for series 6 - as a whole season it probably has The Most Awesome Arc Ever (and River Song just kicks ass, Sweetie), but it COULD have been handled better ("Lets Kill Hitler" was super rushed, and "Mels" as a character was just silly on so many ways, the whole thing was rushed from what could have been 3 clever episodes, etc. etc....) ... but OVERALL... I just love it....ESPECIALLY when taken together with the short mini-skits on the DVD extras, which expand the Doctor/River Song thing even further.

And Bowties are cool. So there.. but then again.... Allons-y! And have a Jelly-baby.

Nice writeup Teague. I did mention eye saccades in my rant, and you may very well be right in the "panning doesn't work" thing, tho I didn't really have my problems there, honestly.

It was much more simple than that. Things that EXPLODEDELY fell apart for me was trivial things... trivial acting things. Like Galadriel and Gandalf touching hands. It looked exactly like what it was, two normal people grabbing hands. The "magic" (to over-use an over-used word even more) was somehow gone. Coz it was like - yes - being there on set seeing two actors do a thing.

And if you've been on a set and seen that, you know that that rathed mundane and boring crap they are doing there? Well, through the magic of cinema, it becomes epic and cool. Only... no. In 3D HFR, that "magical transformation" of it into a MOVIE.... never happens. You have the same, dull, mundane, everyday feel as if you had been on set. It was kinda "so THIS is all there is to it, some guys under some lights in some dressup and makeup"?

The Soap Opera feel.

Am I the only one in love with "A view to a Kill"?

Duran Duran theme, Grace Jones, Chrisopher effin Walken.... !?

Otherwise OHMSS is good and I often claim Lazenby being my fav bond, tho I have a soft heart for the Brosnan/Moore style as well (more casual / humorous take on it)

/Z

HFR is pain in a can...  and the pain is from it being aesthetically so ugly.

What surprised me was not that I hated it. What surprised me that I didn't *always* hate it with the fury of a thousand exploding suns, but that there was whole stretches - sometimes several tens of seconds at a time - where I could live with it. That - and the fact that 50% of my family enjoyed it.... makes me... doubt myself in a very strange way.

As the guy who "whined" about Stereo, it wasn't the case of you doing stereo, it was the case of you doing stereo WRONG (with hard panning). If things had been nicely spread +/- 15 degrees in the stereo field, there would have been no problem.

Who-hoo,  Who-thread?! Where have you been all my life?

My quick 2 cents. I disagree with many other Whovians and people in this thread on many things. (For example, my absolute favourit character? River Song. Yes, I agree, "Lets Kill Hitlers" writing needed fixing and should have been a two-parter, Mels should have been introduced earlier, yada yada instead of "flasback in same episode" Lost-style)

I also am happy to be rid of Amy+Rory. Amy alone was way better companion, the Amy/Rory dynamic annoyed me, I don't see what she sees in him, and I'm glad to be rid of that character.

As for fav doctors I can't really pick a fav, they all have their moments, but Matt is currently hitting it out of the park and as I was discussing w. my son the other day, he has brought proper humor back.... how often was Tennant actually funny? There are a few places, but not in the physical way that mr Smith is. You have to go back to old-series doctors to get the same level of "Funny" methinks (tho I freely admit only to have watched very few select pieces of old series doctors, mostly Tom Baker stuff)

And then there's this:

So.... my thoughts... THE KIDS ACTING? Holy aff? How do you get a ... what... FIVE YEAR OLD to do all THAT!?

Call me cynical, but I'm almost suspecting massive blended takes and even facial editing in post... coz... you simply can't DO that otherwize (heck, I've been guilty of changing peoples facial expressions in AfterEffects myself) smile

Having an In-house guy at NASA that does graphics is new?

Not exactly.

The Godfather of computer graphics, Jim Blinn (invented little stuff like... Bump Mapping... in the 70's) made the animation for the Voyager project, working for JPL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Blinn

http://www.jimblinn.com/

He also did all the CG for Cosmos.

And he's tall.

I've met him.

He's cool.

That is all. smile
