I find it interesting that recent films have explored more of a father-son dynamic, but in a distant or absent father motif rather than a generational passing of the torch motif. Fascinating smile

That's not a huge deal. I like the idea that the Doc has a favorite planet, why the frack it's earth I have no idea, seems a little Terran-egocentric to me, but what are you gonna do. Big old universe and earth is the one he picks, astounding. tongue

Well, one aspect that was established with one of the first Doctors (if not THE First) was that he was fascinated by humanity. He sees that humanity has great potential and wants to see them live up to it. It is one of the reasons the Doctor can be so grumpy when humans mess up. Because he knows they are capable of so much more.

This isn't really remarked upon too much with RTD's newer incarnations, save for the first Christmas Special with Tennant.

Also, why do all the super villains move to Gotham? wink

I would lay this at the feet of Russell T Davies, the show runner, creator of those characters, and writer of a huge chunk of those episodes. The reason why Rose is exactly the same with Ten as she was with Nine, despite the fact that it really doesn't make any sense for her to be so, is because RTD decided to keep their dynamic essentially unchanged.

You're actually the first person I've heard of who thinks their dynamic stayed the same. Many people (myself included) think they started to become a bit of an 'irritating lovey dovey couple' type, whereas I didn't get that with Eccleston. I dunno, maybe because I haven't watched any Series 2 in a while I'm remembering other peoples thoughts other than my own. Don't get me wrong, I do love Ten & Rose! Even if this post makes it seem otherwise, I still get it right in the feels when I hear the Doomsday score.

Well, I might be a bit off the mark with that actually. I wasn't a big fan of Eccleston as the Doctor, and I fucking hate Rose, so I haven't watched series 1 in a long time, and I have no plans to ever go back to it. I guess what I mean is that it isn't Rose, per se, but more that everyone around Ten treats him exactly the same way despite the fact that he's a completely different person than Nine was. Ten also feels like a character penned by the same writer as Nine. And although the lovey-dovey nonsense was cranked up during Ten's run, it wasn't absent with Nine. He handled things differently, but he was just as much of a jealous asshat when it came to Rose as Ten was. So despite the fact that there was a new Doctor, there was very little disruption in the Whoniverse.

Personally, I think there was enough of a difference, but you might be right about the writer. Nine was definitely my favorite Doctor, but the fact that there was only one season with him and then hit with a new Doctor was a little off putting. At least it was for me, as a new fan. Mostly because the people who are around Ten are a lot of the same who were around Nine so there isn't that much room for treating him different without basically reintroducing the series all over again. It might have been more affected by real world events than in universe.

And, for my part, the change from Nine to Ten was still off putting enough that it took me a while to warm up to Tennant. The relationship with Rose was one of the few things that made it work for me smile

I think I only saw it when it aired, but Eddie Murphy's guest host bit on Saturday Night Live told the whole Best Defense story. He was asked to come back onto SNL, and he said "No", because he was now a movie star. Then Best Defense happened, and he said "Yes" to SNL, because he now had no career. Then Beverly Hills Cop came out, and he was suddenly a star again... but had already committed to do the show, so there he was.

That episode also has Eddie Murphy ranting on the then new small GI Joe action figures, who are way too small to give Barbie the kind of loving the 12" Joe's could.

Sounds like Trey's rant on the GI Joe commentary wink

Regarding the Daleks,
I cannot confirm it (yet, but I'm trying) but the original creator of the Daleks, Terry Nation, had control of the appearance of the Daleks in the series. Now that he has passed away, his estate manages and agrees to when and where the Daleks can appear. I heard rumor (but cannot confirm it) that part of the agreement between BBC and Nation's estate was that the Daleks must appear in every season of new Who.

However, this is only a rumor I heard and I cannot confirm it  hmm

I'm the complete opposite, the Doctor being the last time lord, because of a choice he made and has to live with, is THE most interesting aspect of the character. It's why I fell in love with the character and mythology in the first place.

There are aspects that I like, such as in "The Fires of Pompey" where the audience gets an insight in to how he views the universe as a Time Lord. That was such a wonderful and poignant insight, for me, that it will solidified how difficult it was for him to be alone.

  Show
That, and moving across alternate time lines, something Time Lords could do with ease, which also accented his loss of Rose

But, having someone who gets his burden and having an actual discussion about what he has down, and the guilt he feels. I think there is a lot of depth that they could explore with having someone who understood.

Also, this is for Teague:

Spoiler just in case people are not up to speed on the 10th doctor and River.

  Show
I think that River was an unnecessary complication in the Doctor's mythos, though I understand why they felt they needed to do it. However, if you want someone to spout enigmatic clues to the Doctor, the Ood seem to do that very well in "End of Time." Why have the convoluted relationship between River and the Doctor?

Ok, besides that, I really think that the Doctor should have another Time Lord as a counter balance to the Doctor. I always liked the Master, but it would be nice to not constantly have "the last of the Time Lord" thing going on.

So, I recently revisited this episode as I mowed my lawn and really am amazed at the observations regarding how the art of critiquing culture and being more of a film critic has fallen by the wayside. It often is interesting to me, and a recent chat with bullet3 and BDA was confirmed by this episode, namely that it will take a couple of generations but we will see a resurgence of culture and elitism. I honestly think that the current youngsters are less likely to tolerate 'splosions, and the action flick cinema for long. I really don't know why I think so, but having worked with teenagers for a little bit, I certainly see a little more of a gleam that might shape itself in to a more thoughtful consideration of art and media before long. So, despite the current complaints of "movies suck!" (exaggeration for the sake of a point-its a joke, we're walking, we're walking...) I believe it will get better.

Also, I decided to start reading about film criticism. Not because I want to become a critic, but because I really don't want to sit there and thinking that critics are blowing smoke just because of X, Y or Z in film critic school. I want to be more informed beyond my usual character examination that I normally do.

So, hey, look, Friends in Your Head is expanding my horizons wink

Seriously, tho, The machete kill is one of the few things that I actually liked in that trailer. It's corny, but it's the fun sort of corny. The rest of it gives me bad vibes. Two guys get killed by aliens and one gets a machete through his face, and the rest of them just kinda stand there and talk their lines. Vin Diesel getting lots of 'bad-ass' poses and doing that thing where you tilt your head down and look forward so you look super pissed off. I used to do that in my bathroom mirror when I was 15.

It's too 'directed' and fake feeling. Doesn't help that half of the movie is CG. It feels like every moment is scripted and acted. It's a problem I have with a lot of CGI heavy films. That and the amazing luck the protagonists have, where something will explode and you'll get a slow-motion CGI shot of 5000 razor-sharp shards of shrapnel JUST BARELY missing them. Or you get the scenes where they have the actor do STUFF and they animate the CGI monsters afterward to make sure the hero looks like a bad-ass that hits every swing and dodges every attack. I hate that sort of stuff. I wish the monsters would just back up a step or two so that the actor was just flailing around at nothing.

Having recently rewatched the "Pitch Black" trailer as well as bits of the "Chronicles" trailer, I think that the proof will be in the film itself, not in whatever trailer they throw out there.
I get that people are tired of CG, but I have a feeling, a gut instinct if you will, that they are holding back, giving Vin Disel the generic poses, so as not to spoil the movie. Call me an optimist wink

Also, as I learned from these and other boards, movies are what you make of them.

One thing I have learned on the Internet is something I like to call the "Omni Law" (because I'm not if it has a name). Omni law states that there will ALWAYS be someone out there who will defend ANYTHING at ANYTIME.

Something you find, if you are at all creative, is that for just about any work you do, SOMEONE out there will think it's the best thing ever and find it life changing. You yourself might think it sucks, that it is an embarrassment to you now, but to one fan it represents all that is good about your work. It's true for stuff I've written, I know that.

I do understand that, though I have not personally experienced it-my wife has, as she writes fan fiction.

Personally, and this will sound rather arrogant but I don't mean it as such, but I look at things kind of sideways. Movies don't work for me in the way that most of you regard them. I take films at more than face value, wanting some sort of meaning in the work itself and not just a "popcorn movie." Films can be entertaining in that regard, but if it doesn't engage me on a character level or a meaning level, then I feel kind of hollow afterwards. I am sure that I sound overly critical or picky so I'll just leave it at that. I really don't know how else to describe it hmm

How about them Dodgers?
