Ok, now what?

I agree with everything in that statement except the Fight Club thing. tongue Though I'm curious to hear your reasoning for why.

Personally, I have never been impressed with that movie though it seems that I am one of the few. The idea of this guy becoming a grassroots terrorist because he needs serious, serious, psychiatric help and succeeds, is not my idea of a protagonist that I can readily identify with (though I get the insomnia thing, so I might someday understand).

Honestly, I might have to revisit it (sans children so I'll see it when I retire wink ) because I did find the ending to be an incredible twist. But, I wasn't really engaged in the film until then. I watched it because people said "This film is amazing!"

Ugh, you people.

I can name, off the top of my head, several movies that I like that WAYDM (formerly [redacted]) found bad, implausible, annoying or otherwise stupid and just have to shrug and say "Ok, I don't get it."

I mean, these guys got their start ripping Phantom Menace to shreds, to shreds, and yet that movie still gets defenders. One thing I have learned on the Internet is something I like to call the "Omni Law" (because I'm not if it has a name). Omni law states that there will ALWAYS be someone out there who will defend ANYTHING at ANYTIME. We recently saw a resurgence in the Attack of the Clones thread, where many, including myself, defended it as a fun film and not the worst of the PT. So, beauty, as with many things, can be subjective. I think some of the more beautiful films are child's films because they better capture a sense of innocence and play that is often lacking in more maintstream films.

With all that, don't we encourage discussion here? Isn't that the point? I think that "Fight Club" is an atrocious film-there I said it!

Ok, now what?

Speak for your self, Riddick looks fucking awesome.

I was going to say, other than the whole slo-mo bits (wondering if just trailer fodder) and the machete kill, I'm looking forward to it.

I mean, haven't we all agreed that trailers are kind of the worse way to judge a film?

It is really hard for me to quantify a movie as "bad" because often if they are stupid, I will laugh at their absurdity. Like Dave, being bad isn't grounds for me to "hate" a movie, because hate involves a level of emotional commitment I'm not willing to make towards a film.

However, recently, having had debates with others (here and elsewhere) about stupid films, I tried to be more critical. So "The Clone Wars" movie, the one released in theaters, gets a billing as a stupid movie, and my leaning towards it being an awful film. The voice-acting is absolutely wooden, with no expressiveness or life at all. The plot makes little to no sense and characters are just kind of thrown in there.

Rewatched "Orange County" one time and that is a pretty bad film too, though with some moments. However, the overall stupidity of the choices made by people land it as "bad" in my view.

Finally, no one mentioned "Battlefield Earth?" Or is that just universally considered bad without comment?  wink

I think that's a general rule of story telling. One or two samurai, wandering the countryside, occasionally meeting others, works. Showing thousands of them in the service of some lord, not so much, unless they're quickly slaughtered and we get down to just a couple wandering around. Same with guns. An army? Boring. Armed former soldier who's a bit insane? Fun.

What about LOTR or Kingdom of Heaven?

I have no problem with Jedi in their hey-day but like Trey said, it's not the impression we got from the OT that they were just hanging around Galactic Central, giving speeches and chilling in the Senate. No exactly enigmatic monks there. But, I also like Jedi, and enjoy learning about them. I liken them to the Wizards in LOTR and have read as much as I can on the 5 Wizards in Tolkein's mythos. But, they are still mysterious and do not appear much. And we don't see two of them at all.

This, of course, supports Trey's argument in the commentaries that the Jedi should not be so prominent in the story. But, even if they play a small role, you could still have them show up in a final battle, of sorts, where they gather the Jedi from across the galaxy for a battle, similar to Aaragorn gathering his Dunedain kin for his battle at Pelennor fields. Again, its when you know that things are getting deadly serious when the Jedi, who we have only seen one or two of, martial together.

That's why I like the Old Republic setting of games/timeline/thing as it allows the Jedi to be very populous without affecting the OT-at all. But the PT is showing the fall of Vader and the Republic and becoming the Empire, so it shouldn't be about the Jedi at all, save for the small part they play in Anakin's life. And then Mike wrote a story...the end wink

Shouldn't there come a certain point where, if you're trying to do more than X, you should just turn it into an original project? Unless you're going the Phase II route, where they're adapting actual Star Trek scripts.

Well, if you're like me, it sometimes hard to discern between inspiration and ripping off. Not to derail this thread but I personally have been working on a film concept, but divorcing it from original inspiration of Star Wars ideas. Doing research for school makes me even more wary of plagiarism so I reference my inspirations.

Also, it is also easier to work within a predefined world than fashion your own with rules, history and design. So, part of it comes from humans being lazy too wink
Although, Lucas originally wanted to do Buck Rogers but  couldn't  get the rights, so he did create his own. It's interesting to me how that came about and inspires me more.

For me, I'm just glad people are still trying. I think Dark Resurrection Vol 1 is certainly a great, grand scale, fan film that actually takes a little more of an original twist.

Honestly, I typically have a lower tolerance for low budget projects such as these, but this one had enough originality to be up my alley.

Given the often terrible, cliche or silly plots of many fan films (if they had a plot) this is definitely a step in the right direction, for me. It reminds me a bit like Dark Resurrection with larger battles, rather than the smaller ensembles often seen. It doesn't just have Jedi battling Sith in a forest.

So, while I will wait to see the final product, I am at least glad they got this far and show a little more ambition.

I have more I want to say, but suffice to say that I am trying to understand the (seemingly?) recent string of "This movie sucks!" anger that seems to be rampant these days. I get not liking movies, I get even hating movies (just watch the Clone Wars movie) but man, movies must really be sucking these days. It seems every week the next movie is just "stupid" or what have you. It's like this:

I think once you divorce Mike's story fom the Star Wars universe, especially if he intends to reframe it as fantasy instead of sci fi, other changes will follow organically. Obviously, Mike is free to base his empire on ancient Rome, but he's best off staying away from the SWEU otherwise.

And if it's fantasy, the sabers can be metal instead of plasma. Or the wizards can wield magic right out of their hands or something. Just don't use wands, obviously.

Curiosity occurs to me with this thought.
If you divorce Mike's story from SW and craft his own, what would he call the Force or whatever magical abilities exist?
