Pacific Rim was the best massive-robots-vs-massive-dinosaurs movie I have ever seen. They did really well to deal with a bunch of the larger plot problems (why big robots? why two pilots?) right up front. I have a small pile of nitpicks (yes, including nuclear=analog=what?), but it got stepped on by giant freaking robots fighting giant freaking dinosaurs.

Also, after you have a daughter you can't watch scenes of scared young girls. It's...I'm going to stop thinking about it now.

Another movie I can't see...

The one impression I kept from those ancient Pertwee episodes, and which seems just as true in the four 21st century Who episodes I just watched (and Torchwood as well), is that one of the themes of Doctor Who is that the universe doesn't give a damn about anybody.  Every episode seems to involve one or more random people getting royally farked by random circumstance.

Yup. If I"m not mistaken, in the About Time books about the original series, they mention in only ONE story of the entire series does nobody die. ONE. The Doctor often seems to not be interested until some poor guy is killed (the 4th Doctor was usually guilty of this).

The idea that the Doctor showing up is a sign for people to panic, as something horrible is going to happen, is a fun one that I think New Who dealt with for a bit.

Yeah, that was a fun part of Rose's research in to the Doctor when she first encounters him. A kind of internet, conspiracy theory, researcher (think British X-Files) tells her that if the Doctor shows up, run.

I think Tenant did a great job and how some excellent episodes, but I wish Eccelston had gone on for longer. I always liked Captain Jack, but Torchwood never grew on me, so I passed on it. I would watch it if Faldor was in it. Though, I was annoyed at how many 9th Doctor episodes occurred in Cardiff. But, now I know where that is:

Good find, Squiggly. Will have to give that a listen smile

Also, BDA, I love "Hey Ya" for reasons really unexplainable here but that took me back to college days and hanging out with friends. Also, the music video is incredibly complicated and hilarious.

Personally, I've always preferred the 9th Doctor and wish Eccelston had gotten a longer run, than just regenerating in to Tenant.

Besides, technically it is the "first series, second series" from the reboot and Davies' starting to run it.

Speaking of "Fear Her" SFDebris just did is review of that episode and it is appropriately scathing:

Hey guys. Faldor will be away for a little while, and I'm taking the wheel for next week's recording. So, I'm planning on getting the Final Fantasy Episode out of the way.

So, apart from me, who's able to participate?

When do you what to do this?

Not a flick - Golden Cronenberg is in the new SHIELD series.  Rumor has it we'll also see Firefoot, Sergeant Pants, Lady Drywall, and Paperclip. As for the rumors of a cameo by Cheesestraw and Tickling Otter, I'm not holding my breath.

Don't know why, but this made me think of Pearls Before Swine's Super Crocs:

Love this episode and echo the sentiments of all that listening to you guys just chatting is a lot of fun.

Also, I will say that Pacific Rim is nice in that it actually has humans in the machines, which is at least an interesting, if not completely original, twist. It gives more humanity to the battles, which sets it apart from the rest of the explosion movies, which either involve super beings, or machines fighting for us. I'm not totally excited for it.

Also, please do Blade 2. Again, more Trey talking visual effects and creature effects smile

Referenced in Grab Bag 3: Grabbing with a Vengeance, I now recommend Prince of Persia.

Also, said it before, but I'll say it again, Species. I want to hear Trey talk on that one smile

Personally, I want a gritty reboot of Power Rangers; I'm just not sure how to go about it  hmm

GALACTIC BATTLES SAGA
EPISODE ONE
THE SPECTRAL HAZARD

A mysterious fleet of ships carries out a campaign of attacks against planets on the Outer Rim of the Galactic Allegiance. They appear out of nowhere, decimate the planet and then vanish once more into the black. The Athan monk BROTHER TOBIN is drawn into the conflict, dispatched from the Athan Temple on the jungle planet Yithian to investigate the mystery.

An interesting aspect of the Star Wars mythos is the changing of the story as Lucas created it. Obviously, the prequels suffered from lack of a cohesive story or any characters that we cared about.

Two things come to my mind as we consider something different. First, how do you create a story similar to SW without it being "STAR WARS?" I mean, lightsabers have become as icongraphic with SW as Darth Vader.

Secondly, I've read older SW materials that predate the PT and explain the fall of the Republic, Palpatine's rise, the Rebel Alliance back story, etc. I think the best descriptor I ever read of the Republic is to relate it to the fall of the Roman Empire. That moral corruption and decay had become the "coin of the realm" so to speak, and the Jedi become further removed due to corruption. Palpatine steps up because he was basically assumed to be naive and easily manipulated by the politicians without being too well known by the media. However, Palpatine played them and manipulated them back.

So, how much EU material that came before the PT is relevant to this discussion?

SPOILER Show
Liam Neeson was rude to the hotel staff. no movie hero takes out their anger on the little guy

I don't really Liam Neeson now all he seems to do is get angry at people.

My friend and my wife were all watching it and I kept joking about Liam's voice and how he always sounds angry, with maybe Qui-Gon and Aslan being couple of exceptions.

Usually I am not a fan of a movie who paints its protagonist as not really a hero, but more shady, even though we're supposed to cheer him on. However, just from a psychological point of view, I found the whole concept of assuming an identity you were pretending to be fascinating.

Carbon fibers are a perennial favorite among beanstalk proponents as well, but I know arguably less about that material.

Well, stumbled upon this movie on TV and will have to get to see it again.

I am generally a fan of psychological thrillers with a twist and this one definitely delivers. If you can't tell from the poster, it's Liam Nesson, who I am a fan of by reputation alone, and Diane Kruger, who is wonderful actress and works very well since the film takes place in Germany.

It starts off as a man and wife on a trip to Berlin for a scientific conference. The man gets in a car accident, and is in a coma for a couple of days. Waking up, he tries to find his wife, only to find another man claiming to be him. With no ID or anything else, no one believes him and so he sets off to figure it out. Along the way, he tries to find the cabbie from the accident who actually pulled him from the car.

The great part is that it twists several time, and when you think you have figured out, it twists again. Highly recommend it.
